I think the winning games should be decided by a diverse panel of game developers, and they would be real gaming veterans like Miyamoto and Gabe Newell. You know, people who know what a good game is, and are able to make respectable nominations.
That means the audience would have to use their heads and reflect on the choices which means thinking past what your told which is a BIG no-no in games and movies now-a-days. This means excluding a vast amount of the "casual gamers" who don't mind having three different markers on screen to show you the objective plus a map on the pause menu, you know the people who ruined gaming by demanding a sequel every year and rushing development people who go for the flavor of the month in everything they do. Those with no substance who regurgitate the opinions of the reviewers who are paid off by game developers to give them a good score. You know the same people that called you a loser or a freak because you had nothing to say to them or would rather be alone when gaming was seen as something for outcasts.
You still think this opinion all these years later? Because I suspect that developers would obviously vote in favor of their studio's works such as Gabe Newell likely voting in favor of Left 4 Dead 2, after all it was under his companies roof.

in my opinion to make a good game award is to take these steps 1. us a particular category base on the games and have it make sense 2. rate the games base on critical reception, gameplay, and sales 3. have voice actors like Nolan North host the show 4. make the environments feel new and creative and not generic and cheap like flashy lights and dated music 5. no Magen Fox 6. don't have spike get involved with it, spike sucks

But still it had some flaws (like NPH won best performance instead of John Marston's voice actor, clearly because he hosted the show that year) 2011 was better in every way, missed the 2012 and 2013 was a f*** mess.... Geoff left Spike/GTTV (I think) and created the Game Awards (no longer presented by Spike), missed that one too but it seemed that they improve even more.

The most important point of my first comment was simply that fans shouldn't be allowed to vote.
The VGAs got better in the next year. I know I saw them. I didn't like the host, but I recall ACB winning best action adventure, and RDR winning GOTY, being topped off with a live performance from Jose Gonzolez singing "Far Away" from the game. Then there was even a teaser for Skyrim. THAT was a good show.
Couldn't they have a category for each genre of games and let some fans put out some examples of games to be able to vote for. Like that Yu-on: The Grudge game. Some people play that, then play slender, then say which they thought were the scarier one, they continue to test with more games and eventually they have a big rooster of games, which they pick a few from and the fans can vote for some of those... Would that work?
I know i'm really late to this video, and hope you guys read this, but this is probably the best vote system for anything; Picture a system online, or wherever, and have 10-20 games per genre to choose from, then each voter gets to pick 1 game from each genre. (Hoping nobody cheats to get more votes in. unless they can each day.) Now here comes to best part, they have to give a reason why; at least a logical reason. No "I like it cause I play it." bullshit... It has to be similar to "The characters are memorable and has well made sound design." because then there is a reason for the vote to matter, and each vote has to go through a process of checking each one to see if it's legimate or not. Either way I see it, voting has to be like this, similar to it, because I don't see any show that isn't biased at certain points. :/
Have game developers vote on the 'best' in each category at events like PAX and especially GDC. Until gaming has a legitimate critiquing industry built around it that's pretty much all we've got. This method is especially useful when it comes to categories within complicated fields like programming and engines. For example, transitioning between texture maps on Nathan Drake to simulate the wrinkles in his clothing is now being adopted by other AAA studios. It would have definitely won.
I think that video game awards show should be done by well known reviewers and LPrs. maybe get the guy that was on the package of madden or fifa that year for the sports category as it would hold relevance, then the game are awarded by category based on how they sold, and reviews given. and for the game of the year should be the winners of each category
Here is a thought - Put out a bunch of 'possible reps' for each of the big fandoms (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and Steam) and have people vote for their rep via their platform. - Then they all play the games that were voted via online ballot into top six, and they're all told have to vote for one that isn't exclusively on their system. Better to have a bunch of disarmed fanboys than a bunch of closet ones or even non-gamers.
a videogame awards ceremony should be almost as entertaining to watch as the games are to play perhaps even have multiple hosts dressed up as there favorite characters or have the characters simplydeliver the awards to them i feel your right about the over the top sponsors also catagories for every console & pc not just a select few as for judging it should be a group of dedicated long term gamers who have no reason to lie about anything each covering there own select categories and themselves

Some people play that, then play slender, then say which they thought were the scarier one, they continue to test with more games and eventually they have a big rooster of games, which they pick a few from and the fans can vote for some of those... Would that work?

I know i'm really late to this video, and hope you guys read this, but this is probably the best vote system for anything; Picture a system online, or wherever, and have 10-20 games per genre to choose from, then each voter gets to pick 1 game from each genre. (Hoping nobody cheats to get more votes in. unless they can each day.) Now here comes to best part, they have to give a reason why; at least a logical reason. No "I like it cause I play it." bullshit... It has to be similar to "The characters are memorable and has well made sound design." because then there is a reason for the vote to matter, and each vote has to go through a process of checking each one to see if it's legimate or not. Either way I see it, voting has to be like this, similar to it, because I don't see any show that isn't biased at certain points. :/

I think it would work if people could vote for there favorites, a panel of experts can sort it and chose the options and the fans can vote from there.
Have game developers vote on the 'best' in each category at events like PAX and especially GDC.
Until gaming has a legitimate critiquing industry built around it that's pretty much all we've got.
This method is especially useful when it comes to categories within complicated fields like programming and engines.
For example, transitioning between texture maps on Nathan Drake to simulate the wrinkles in his clothing is now being adopted by other AAA studios. It would have definitely won.
The best Award Show for Video Games? Shouldn't it be like the Tutorial of a Game (Commentary and Hosts) and somewhat of a Game? (the actual Voting?)
I think that video game awards show should be done by well known reviewers and LPrs. maybe get the guy that was on the package of madden or fifa that year for the sports category as it would hold relevance, then the game are awarded by category based on how they sold, and reviews given. and for the game of the year should be the winners of each category

Here is a thought - Put out a bunch of 'possible reps' for each of the big fandoms (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and Steam) and have people vote for their rep via their platform. - Then they all play the games that were voted via online ballot into top six, and they're all told have to vote for one that isn't exclusively on their system.
Better to have a bunch of disarmed fanboys than a bunch of closet ones or even non-gamers.
a videogame awards ceremony should be almost as entertaining to watch as the games are to play perhaps even have multiple hosts dressed up as there favorite characters or have the characters simplydeliver the awards to them i feel your right about the over the top sponsors also catagories for every console & pc not just a select few as for judging it should be a group of dedicated long term gamers who have no reason to lie about anything each covering there own select categories and themselves

The first dragonkill is rather soon, but you don't kill it during the first 10 mins. The first dragon (Alduin) APPEARS during that time, but you don't get to fight him yet. Granted the first dragonkill does come rather quickly.
