    Hi Ben
    I just have a thought for you and your members. Some may already be doing this.
    I have been watching many videos on doing maintenance on the fx filter family with purge valves.
    All videos show that water comes out from the valves when removed. Well, what I like to do is remove some water first using the purge valve. When some water is removed this way first, there is no water that splashes out from the top and saves you having to clean up using towels. We will be moving into a carpeted condo and I loved using this procedure when your tank is sitting on carpet. It really works. I hope you try it and give us your opinion on this first step before removing your aqua valves. Cathy

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  ปีที่แล้ว

      I stopped using the purge valve because it would wear out and leak ( plus I had to get the canister elevated so water would flow out ). Now I keep my FX-6 in a Rubbermaid tub, so a little water is not a big deal. On carpet I would certainly keep any canister in a tub and use a water alarm, like the Watchdog I show in several of my videos.

    I also have an electric blue acara (one) in a planted tank full of tetras. Even though I did a lot of research before putting him in the tank, I was still apprehensive about adding a cichlid to a community tank. But he's been in there for months and it's worked out just fine. Electric blue acaras seem to be a lot of fun. They have personality; they're very bratty "water puppies." (And no, he doesn't dig up the plants.)

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, acts like a mini-Oscar, playing on the glass and more or less ignoring the tank mates.

      @@BenOchart As long as it's a solo Acara never a problem. Note the school of glass cats and there are some 'accidental' guppies that were a netting accident with a female guppy. I couldn't catch her so ...but they ended up providing live food for the bigger guys in here and I would snag what I could at feeding time- was able to keep the population to about 6. Acara's are big puppies as long as they aren't breeding. th-cam.com/video/AUW09nUmx_k/w-d-xo.html

    First off, your fish are exceptionally beautiful ❤
    I would like to get back into this more educated. But I just want one big tank and some species specific smaller ones… and that’s it. But what I see on TH-cam, the most successful aquarists are always moving fish around and re- aquascaping a whole aquarium…
    Can I get into this and just maintain a few dissimilar aquariums without constantly moving or redoing fish or aquariums?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely. Sometimes we have to move things around for compatibility but often TH-cam content creators are obsessively moving things around to create new content.

    I have found the EB Acaras to be super friendly unless they are guarding their babies. I started with 4 of them about a year and a half ago in my 150g, I've lost count of how many I have right now but I have around 40 and I've given a few away. I also have green severums, clown loaches, pictus , blood parrots, about 5 bristlenose plecos and Nicaraguan cichlids. I live stream that tank and a shrimp tank every day from 8am est to 8pmest.

    The red terror was ganged up on. He would have overcome that and then gone on a reign of terror, but it worked out cause he got taken out. Just another level of violence over the chocolate or Oscars, the salvini is on a similar level, but female.

    Ben Just this week I had to remove my Electric Blue Acaras from my 180 gallon they actually killed one of my Uaru cichlids that are 3 to 4 times their size. I haven't seen these little guys ever be aggressive and then all of a sudden they decided to be major butt head. I didn't know at first why My Uaru was dead and all beat up never had any aggression issues in my tank. So kept a watch for the next couple days and there it was the EBA where beating up on my other 3 Uaru's so They had to be moved.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are they paired up and trying to breed?

    • @razinfishes1918
      @razinfishes1918 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BenOchart they were a pair. But they haven't breed in this tank for over 8 or 9 months. They breed in my 75 gallon but not in the 180. As they were the smallest fish in the tank approx 3 inches. Where all my Sevrums, Uaru's are 7 to 8 inches then 5 large silver dollars. Not sure why they went psycho but each fish have there own personality. I removed the male and left the female now I have peace again.

    I'm going on vacation how do you feed your fish if you have a sump?

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having a sump doesn’t effect feeding. I usually leave measured portions of food for someone to feed when I’m away.
