Riverhillsoft were responsible for developing ports of Jordan Mechner's Prince of Persia for a range of consoles with CD-ROM technology, including the PC-Engine, FM Towns and the Sega Mega CD version.
The game is still very much Prince of Persia at it's core. If you've played another version of the game then you already know what to expect.
What the CD version does bring to the table is an excellent Red Book audio soundtrack that sounds absolutely brilliant. Playing the game on a decent set of speakers and amplifier is a real treat for the ears and is highly recommended. The sound effects have also been cleaned up compared to other versions and sound great.
Perhaps of less consequence are the anime-inspired introduction and ending sequences, accompanied by rubbish voice acting. Even so, digitised speech was still extremely uncommon in games, let alone any recorded at CD-quality, so it would still have been quite an eye-opener for those who owned an original copy.
One interesting difference between the Riverhillsoft versions and others is the character design of Jaffar. For some reason, he seems to be depicted as a demonic, blue-skinned, pointy-eared being with red eyes, probably to point out to audiences that he's the bad guy in all of this.
I was expecting this to be something in the cut-scenes only, but the ending came as a surprise to me. The final guy that you fight on level 12 doesn't appear to be Jaffar as in all other versions of the game. Once you clear the level, there is a final show-down on the palace balcony with Jaffar himself; it's little more than an additional sword-fight, but it's something I wasn't expecting.
The final cut-scene of the game sees a victorious prince standing over Jaffar's bloody corpse, sword drawn and still dripping blood. Both he and the princess proceed to make out, presumably whilst still standing on Jaffar's rapidly cooling body; so romantic!
Technically, the game has a few a problems. The frame-rate noticeably chugs in certain areas and this can make combat difficult. Timing sword parries was difficult and counter-counter attacks were impossible to perform.
The sprites used for combat animations don't appear to be drawn correctly. The enemy guards sword appears in his right hand when standing still, but mysteriously appears in his left when attacking. Also, the guards don't hold swords correctly when standing still; the sword is floating slightly above the hand and simply doesn't look right. While it doesn't detract from the actual gameplay, it's quite apparent and really should have been corrected before release.
Even though the game isn't perfect, it's still Prince of Persia and the fantastic audio makes the game worth the price of admission alone. Great stuff!

Damn, the graphics are much brighter than the PC-98 and SharpX68000 versions!😮

Something weird about this version is that they switched the dungeon and palace themes around from the PC-98 and Turbografx CD version. And level 12 doesn't use its theme from those versions either.

Don't forget the SharpX68000 version. It also has those themes, too.

The Mega-CD version has the best cutscenes out of all the japanese versions (which also includes PC-98, X68000, PC Engine CD...) with more elaborate visuals and is the only one with voice acting.
The Mega-CD version also has much better in-game audio than the PC Engine CD version. Nicer sound fx thanks to the system's multi PCM channels (while the PC Engine CD add-on only has one ADPCM channel) and plays CD music during the battle sequences while it's chiptunes on PC Engine CD. Also the Mega-CD version has music in a more appropriate order IMO (it's inverted on PC Engine CD).

The Mega-CD version is the one with better music. It has the music in a more appropriate order and plays CD music during the battle sequences while PC Engine (Turbografx-16) plays lower quality, chiptune music during these moments. Also the Mega-CD version has much better sound fx thanks to the system's multi PCM channels (while Turbografx-16 only has one ADPCM channel).
And yeah, the cutscenes are also better on Mega-CD, both visually and sound wise.
