I have an Ibis V2s and I’m considering T Type, what i’m interested to know is how the crank lines up to the v2s 155mm chain-line, for instance do you space it out after removing the ibis isg05 mount as you don’t need it anymore and how close do them bash guards get to the chainstays as the rings are always very close on the Ripmo ✌️
You can run the ISCG mount, or not, just a matter of spacing the DUB BB out or not. The bash guards sit outside of the chainring, so they won't hit the frame. - Dan P.
Has anyone mentioned that the cassettes are now using pins in the three largest cogs (in XO and XX) where in the previous AXS generation all the cogs were machined from one piece and pinned only to the largest cog?…and that the chains are now basically copies or SRAM Red road chains…
You are correct regarding the cassettes. Regarding the chains, if I remember correctly there are differences in the chamfering of the plates on the T-type chains vs the Red chains. - Dan P.
@@FanatikBikeCo yes seems right due to the differences in shift ramps from the road to mountain cassettes. The flat top links that are found on the Red chain looks the same so maybe they are taking the same chain and passing it through a different machining process once the chains are linked. So it may reduce their overall cost as far as designing and producing a completely different chain from a separate segment of cycling.
It uses the 8-bolt pattern, so if you have the XX1 cranks intended for power meters, I think so... if you have the standard 3-bolt you will need to wait for an after-market solution. Also, I believe it's 55mm chain line now, which many recent bikes already were... but 53mm might not work exactly as intended.
don't believe sram when they say you need to buy a new crankset for your drivetrain. At the most I could see you needing a new chainring, but wolftooth will have you sorted on that.

X0 and GX are super close in price right now to justify GX over X0. 1100$ for GX and if you do minimal research X0 can be found new from a shop for around 1350$…
I am not experiencing what I consider excessive or undue chain slap, but I also never felt like that was the case with mechanical GX, which I have run for a long time. So maybe we have different tolerances for what that means. Anyone else have any feedback? - Dan P.
At this point you have to run the Transmission cranks (chainring) to use this system and get all the shifting benefits. We have not tried it in any other combinations. Which is to say you need to get the entire drivetrain, unfortunately. - Dan P.
When I see people standing on the derailleurs im seeing the frame flex. Id rather have a replaceable bendable link than 100% force going into the frame.
What’s messing me up is I don’t want to pay for xo but I hate the gx crank, chain and the cassette lol. I hate the chrome! lol. If I can find xo a bit cheaper, I’m sold
The problem is the majority frames can’t run T-Type. So the industry has presented a problem either the masses buy a new bike or they slowly wait for manufactures to adopt UDH design. I suspect Shimano isn’t ready for UDH or their version isn’t ready. If I could convert my 2023 Polygon T8 to UDH I would and I suspect thousands others would too!
The older cassettes were one piece on the GX. I have one on my 2016/17 trek fuel ex 8. Now the GX cassettes are all pinned which is bollocks. Considering I paid a premium for the bike. Does annoy me to no end that the quality is going downhill rather than setting bars.
Currently, yes. I can only imagine lots of companies are working on T-type compatible aftermarket chainrings and will be available before long. - Dan P.
Have to disagree re mech impacts... Ime it is mainly the cage taking riding impacts and either clipping that on rocks or hidden stumps etc or sticks getting stuck in cage & wheel. Laying the bike drive side down isn't the concern for potential consumers! And basically saying you didn't test real world impacts for 'video entertainment' doesn't really cut it for a review & test video! I guess it's good you admitted (after the fact) the impact testing was purely for entertainment (and obviously garnering sales!) & not a serious review video. Missed opportunity to really test this system v traditional. Good that the cages swap easily tho... So well done sram. How long the support parts for remains to be seen of course.

Hi Brooks, sorry to hear that, that's frustrating. We don't have the GX cages in yet, but if you decide to keep using the derailleur, it might be worth trying the GX cage. With the steel back plate and no cut-out in the front plate, I suspect it's stronger. If you just need to replace it asap, we have the X0 (and XX) ones in stock: www.fanatikbike.com/products/sram-x0-transmission-t-type-rear-derailleur-cage-assy-kit - Dan P.
Test rode it today… was pretty under whelming, shifting is way slower than expecting and under load shifting is no where near as refined as Shimano. But I look forward to testing the cable version when released.
I really don’t think there will be. The shifting comes from the software, and does the crash safety features. Seems like most of the advantages would be lost going to a direct mount mechanical derailleur.
For the price difference between the GX group and X0, I would take the GX and swap the cassette for a Garbaruk one. Then it's lighter then X0 and still much cheaper... I truly question why X0 is even there if you look at price/weight now they released the GX version. It's just not worth it anymore...
Wireless derailleurs are bike industry hair splitting when it comes to the term 'upgrade'. when considering the overall effectiveness and efficiency of both wireless and cable systems the difference is negligible . it's like the difference between cloth seats and leather in a car . both will perform well but one will cost waay more due to the coolness factor. Of course when someone pays much more because of they are enamored with prestige , they will argue endlessly , searching for even the minutest difference to justify their purchase . It's fine to "upgrade " if you can afford it but dont fool yourself into believing it's that much better . It ain't !

@@FanatikBikeCo I mean, yea it’s equally useless as saying it could withstand the momentum of a cruise ship traveling at something like 0.00001 m/s. The impact strength of a part is not at all represented by the change in momentum it can withstand. The issue is due to force being equivalent to the time rate of change of momentum. In the case of hitting it with a hypersonic baseball, the impact duration is so extremely fast that the force is enormous. In the laughable counter example, the impact with a barely moving cruise ship would take an eternity allowing for a low impact force across a long duration. Calling a coating expensive is pretty funny. These "coatings" like hard anodize, anodize, TiN, electrolitic, electroless, DLC, Kashima coat... whatever.... there should be nearly 0 price difference between any of the coatings. One might be $100, and one might be $200 (as an extreme example) but companies that do surface treatments charge for BATCHES of... 100... 1000 or more? whatever. So $200/100 parts = $2 dollars they paid for that "coating" per part. If their batch was 1000 parts (which is a tiny batch, they paid 20cents!) Just because its desirable and people pay extra for SHINY is all it is. Now if you want to have 1 done... its full price but that is never the case with mass prod. parts.
These new transmissions look just like derailleurs. So now we have cockpits and transmissions on bikes. Guess we need to call our legs power plants or something. Please stop bike industry
Yup... I hit the derailleur arm on a rock and it broke very quickly. Back to Shimano XTR as it's equally as durable. When you brake your derailleur you brake it at the cage and never at the body. So why make the body beefier and leave the arm as weak as before (and more more expensive)? Also, warranty wouldn't know about such things (and yes, there are already more broken cages out there than I can count) because people just have to buy a new one and cannot file a warranty claim on such occasions. Yes, you do have scuffs on the derailleur cage but it never brakes either on the old derailleurs. It's the cage that's the weakest point and also, sometimes you hit the cage and the dropout bends. Get a new one for 15$ and you're good to go. This is just false claims. The transmission isn't more durable, just way more expensive.

The pogo pins that connect to the battery will eventually collapse and since there is no way to solder a new one in on the T-type axs your $600 -$1200 derailleur will be garbage if outside of warranty. That includes all second hand owners. Since the entire drivetrain works together you won't have the option to just buy a mechanical either.
So when will the bike builder allow for a Rail29 to be built up? I seriously need this! COME ON!
why isn't Shimano coming out with their own wireless transmission?
Shimano does their own thing in their own time. It took them ages to come out with 12 speed group. Just installed XT 12 speed on my MTB and it is so goooooood
@fanatik what is the chain slap like on this model? Is the clutch stronger than the previous generation AXS GX?
It is extremely quiet. The way the derailleur moves is a little different than a traditional derailleur, so you don't get the loud noise that happens with AXS stuff.
- Dan P.
Would love to try one these out ixjust bought an new embt came with XT one not used it yet but always fancied one these just the price is crazy after spending 5k on the bike in a Jan sale or would been 7k so kindda assuming XT will do for a while i think just cause its brand new embt never had one before not had an mtb for a few year's now so not tried tge new geometry of them either so its going to be an experience lol
broo lookin exactly like the Hr rep from the office xD
I have an Ibis V2s and I’m considering T Type, what i’m interested to know is how the crank lines up to the v2s 155mm chain-line, for instance do you space it out after removing the ibis isg05 mount as you don’t need it anymore and how close do them bash guards get to the chainstays as the rings are always very close on the Ripmo ✌️
You can run the ISCG mount, or not, just a matter of spacing the DUB BB out or not.
The bash guards sit outside of the chainring, so they won't hit the frame.
- Dan P.
@fanatik does the bash guard on the chain ring work like a chain guide as well can’t see the one I have on my trek fuel exe running over that?
i've some fine 5dev cranks and absolute black oval rings (t-type compat), am i able to buy the rest of the drivetrain ala-carte ?
Can I use my existing Hope 155 specialized ebike cranks with the GX System?
Small detail but it’s either chain guard or chain guide right? Doesn’t look like both will fit.
Oh shoot, that was something I wanted to mention in the video, looks like I forgot to. You are correct, one or the other.
- Dan P.
is this new groupset compatible with a specialized enduro expert s3 2023???
Unfortunately it isn't. The current Enduro does not have a UDH rear end so you can not mount transmission on it.
Pay more, get less??
Can you use old cranks and upgrade the sprocket with this new system?
It uses the 8-bolt pattern, so if you have the XX1 cranks intended for power meters, I think so... if you have the standard 3-bolt you will need to wait for an after-market solution. Also, I believe it's 55mm chain line now, which many recent bikes already were... but 53mm might not work exactly as intended.
@@superjimnzcorrect. Wolftooth has the right chainring now for 55m flat top setups using older dub cranks
I've seen a transmission derailur combination with sram red axs front 1x chainring.. Pretty sure they work together.
don't believe sram when they say you need to buy a new crankset for your drivetrain. At the most I could see you needing a new chainring, but wolftooth will have you sorted on that.
Any SRAM chainring with 0 mm offset would be just fine i guess as the Transmission chainrings have 3 mm wider chainline.
@@dvoobyep Wolftooth now has a chainring for flat top and proper spacing for older sun style cranks
@@Aniqa101except flat top chains are narrower. But Wolftooth has you covered for that as well
Hey, do you have any info on whether you can change just the derailleur (for the old gx axs) and use existing chain and sprockets? Are the rollers on the new one any different then on the old one? Thanks
SRAM alleges that you have to use T-Type chains, cassettes, and chainrings. If I remember correctly the spacing on the cassette is a little different. I have not tried it with any other chains or chainrings.
- Dan P.
where I live because south Africa has horrible trade agreements the sram t-type groupset sells for 3.5k usd (on sale, 4k full price ) so i could only ever dream about it ,
That's okay, normal derailleurs work great!
- Dan P.
Sounds like you have an excuse for a flight to the us or Europe. Still cheaper!
pretty sure sram can easily make a cable actuated on this one, they just prefer not to. gotta love those no hangers
They have a patent filed for one they just have not done anything with it
Wouldn’t work the same. A lot of the benefits are in the software.
@@or-ian6973 it would work exactly the same the only thing the softness does is stop people from shifting multiple gears at the same time if you are a decent rider you can learn how to do the same thing but also be able to shift faster when there is no load getting the best of both worlds
@@nickrossi7454 what about the safety features? Wouldn’t have those. Would it work …yes. would it be the same or better than a hanger style derailleur? I really doubt it.
@@or-ian6973 what safety features
thx God, the small replacement part is only 20$. Still, if I destroy my mechanic derailleur I just replace it. And I can do it a few times. Example, retail price: this beauty x0 - 660 euro, mech xt - ~110euro. The reasonal choice for most of the ppl is simple.
Was wondering if the deraulier is attached or held in place say when swapping out tires. Kind of looks as though the axle holds it . Thanks
The derailleur bolts to the frame like the hanger normally would.
@@or-ian6973 are you sure it is bolted ! It sure looks like if you remove the axle the deraulier is unattached

X0 and GX are super close in price right now to justify GX over X0. 1100$ for GX and if you do minimal research X0 can be found new from a shop for around 1350$…
From a show? What kind of show?
What shifter do you like most?
I personally like the new "pod" better than the old paddle remote.
- Dan P.
What's the clutch strength like? Chain slap expected as in mechanical GX?
I am not experiencing what I consider excessive or undue chain slap, but I also never felt like that was the case with mechanical GX, which I have run for a long time. So maybe we have different tolerances for what that means.
Anyone else have any feedback?
- Dan P.
@@FanatikBikeCo I definitely noticed less chain slap noise after switching to Transmission.
if I just want the GX derailleur, shifter, and battery it should just bolt right up to a 2023 roscoe 8 correct?
At this point you have to run the Transmission cranks (chainring) to use this system and get all the shifting benefits. We have not tried it in any other combinations.
Which is to say you need to get the entire drivetrain, unfortunately.
- Dan P.
5:19 How did you break it?
Does the clutch still suck?
When I see people standing on the derailleurs im seeing the frame flex. Id rather have a replaceable bendable link than 100% force going into the frame.
What’s messing me up is I don’t want to pay for xo but I hate the gx crank, chain and the cassette lol. I hate the chrome! lol. If I can find xo a bit cheaper, I’m sold
Wolftooth makes a compatible chainring now for older style dub cranks. 0 offset. So buy the GS derailleur, xo cassette and whatever cranks you want.
@@or-ian6973 ended up getting a deal on xo
Where do you get the compatible bottom bracket?
Is there any way to rebuild my specialized chisel to install udh?
Unfortunately, no, there isn't.
- Dan P.
Man, those gray cranks look like cheap plastic on video. I'm sure in person they look better.....I hope.
Looks weird next to the burnt umber pedal I think too.
So the power meter not built into the unit, its an optional extra?
Correct!
- Dan P.
Is there an oval chainring option with Transmission?
Do believe Wolf Tooth will have some oval options, but nothing stock from SRAM
Does moving to this transmission mean that I'll have to ditch my 5dev cranks??
Currently, yes. I can only imagine lots of companies are working on T-type compatible aftermarket chainrings and will be available before long.
- Dan P.
@@FanatikBikeCo deal breaker for me...for now
@@DZigWolftooth has such chainrings now. I’m keeping my x01 carbon eagle cranks.
Arent bash guards on XO also composite? You said at 1:38 that GX are composite and XO are Aluminium, but I think they are the same. XX and XX SL are Aluminium tho.
They are aluminium on the XO Transmission version!! I have it on my bike!!
@@TheDiablosix6six really? That's nice, I assumed they are comp from looking on the photos, I'm still waiting for my XO mounted to new Propain Tyee, so your message made me a little more happy, thank you :)
Yes, good catch! The X0 and GX share the same bash guard, the XX uses an aluminum version. And I was wrong, they are not compatible with the chainrings from the other other model.

What is the point in spending $1300 on this thing when my mechanical shifts flawlessly?? Just another piece of bling, I guess. Not for me
This is made for xc riders as it shifts well under pressure. You guys don't need it
It’s mechanical.
Is that Tenet pedals on that bike?
Sure is! It’s the Tenet Occult V2 in the Umber color. Definitely a shop favorite!

exactly what's happening with GX AXS rear mech.
I've upgraded my rear mech to XT 11s and it works great now
My xx1 transmission cage bent like a tin can...
Hi Brooks, sorry to hear that, that's frustrating.
We don't have the GX cages in yet, but if you decide to keep using the derailleur, it might be worth trying the GX cage. With the steel back plate and no cut-out in the front plate, I suspect it's stronger. If you just need to replace it asap, we have the X0 (and XX) ones in stock:

The new axs crank arms look ugly compared to the gx cranks I have on my bike now.
Test rode it today… was pretty under whelming, shifting is way slower than expecting and under load shifting is no where near as refined as Shimano. But I look forward to testing the cable version when released.
I really don’t think there will be. The shifting comes from the software, and does the crash safety features. Seems like most of the advantages would be lost going to a direct mount mechanical derailleur.
nice 👍
For the price difference between the GX group and X0, I would take the GX and swap the cassette for a Garbaruk one. Then it's lighter then X0 and still much cheaper...
I truly question why X0 is even there if you look at price/weight now they released the GX version. It's just not worth it anymore...
Agreed. But garbaruk doesn’t have a flat top compatible cassette. Maybe you’re thinking of the regular AXS stuff.
Can these be mounted on a non UDH frame? I have the BMC URS LT Two that came with the SRAM AXS GX 12sp, love it but tired of bending the hanger 😛
GX cassette look cheap imho. Coating looks exactly the same as old HG53 DEORE cassette. Other than that it's nice
Hahahah that was my first thought as well.

It ain't !
Cheaper, but still pretty damn expensive.
Agreed
Agreed but everything is expensive these days. When I compare it to things like food and gas I’m not that upset about it.
@@or-ian6973 I'm seriously considering a Pinion gearbox for my next bike. Expensive, but needs no tuning and very little maintenance, and will likely last the rest of my life.

Are we supposed to be shocked that you got a cheapo, low-end part for $40?

$2000 for a drivetrain is incredibly ridiculous. Used AXS for about a year. Went back to cable GX/XO combo and have not missed AXS at all.
This one is almost half that cost, $1,099.

Yess i think i gonna Go Back too. What was Ur Point going Back? For me ITS the weak Clutch in the gx ( should have gone for x01).
All shills only hitting on the upper part of the derailleur instead of the lower part which is the second most likely part to bend after the derailleur hanger of old, ridiculous pointless crap testing just for marketing.
what I want to know is how bad/well this works with a shimano cassette and chain.
My guess is horribly. Chain dimensions of the links and the cassette ramps are totally different.
Both companies are now using similar technology and ideas to achieve the shifting while under load.
@@MTB_CRZY i found out it would work perfectly fine if not for the 3mm offset difference on the new ttype and the artificial limitation of less micro adjust than axs to make it incompatible on purpose. Oh well. No money to sram from me.

Will the GX work on a 2023 turbo levo ?
Yep, they have an e-bike specific option. - Logan at Fanatik
So you can't run a mullet setup with a T-type?
You can.
- Dan P.
Still way too expensive.... Wtf
You most certainly did NOT hit the derailleur with the equivalent of a hYpErSoNIC BasEBaLL. Momentum and kinetic energy are not interchangeable terms.
But it would have been correct to say we smashed it with the equivalent momentum of a hypersonic baseball, yes? Do you say that because the implication was that it was that it was the same amount of energy as a hypersonic baseball?
- Dan P.
Please see the Smarter Every Day TH-cam channel to see the immense destruction of a 1000mph baseball. Fanatik is one of my favorite biking retailers, I just don’t like the massively misunderstood physics. I wouldn't comment if it wasn't egregious. The AXS derailleur is awesome, it doesn't need the extreme exaggeration, even 134 mph baseball would destroy it, to sell it to many riders.

Now if you want to have 1 done... its full price but that is never the case with mass prod. parts.

Please stop bike industry
Don't forget that snacks are fuel
All that effort to try to shift as good as Shimano XT😂
Those GX cranks look butt ugly. The colour makes it stand out like a pimple and the logo on it looks like an afterthought.
