As a fellow New Englander, I get exactly the vibe you're talking about. It's hard to articulate, but yes, the Masshole energy is strong here. (Despite him actually being a sweet dude.)
Please don't judge Cats by the movie. TS Eliot wrote a collection of poems about cats, Old Possum's collection of Practical Cats. The musical loosely tie several of them together. The movie is a fever dream.
Fun fact: Jimmy Buffett actually wrote a musical, Don't Stop The Carnival, with a concept album out in 1998. Its surprisingly pretty good!! (I only know this because my granddad and father LOVE Jimmy Buffett, and I love musicals, so my dad told me about it). Needless to say, they should have conceptualized/revived /that/ instead of making a JUKEBOX musical.
I know a highschool that just performed Carrie the musical and it was AMAZING. Completely sold out each night. And my god the acting, singing, set, costumes AND charisma was exhilarating!
Carrie the musical was my FAVORITE in middle school, right next to heathers. I'm pretty sure I was the only theater kid in my grade who actually liked it 💀💀
I have a soft spot specifically for musicals based off of horror movies. My dad took me to a showing of The Evil Dead musical and I had the best time... got absolutely soaked in red kool aid but I genuinely loved it
Genuinely my favorite musical is “Hadestown” it’s so good I wrote a 6,000+ word essay about it. The story is amazing and heart breaking. The music is amazing. The stage is amazing. The dancing is phenomenal. I’d really recommend you watch it if possible
I was racking my brain for musicals I love that r completely original and The Book of Mormon and Dear Evan Hanson r the only ones. Heathers Beetlejuice The Waitress and Mean Girls r movie adaptations, Be More Chill and The Phantom of the Opera are based on books. Hadestown is based on a myth, Hamilton is based on history, and Wicked is based on(but not an adaptation of) a movie. Sweeney Todd is based on an urban legend turned book turned play(not musical). Nothing is original anymore, that’s one of the biggest reasons Shucked did so well. It’s actually original
Since Tugg mentioned it, the musical Shucked started out inspired by the IP of the midcentury TV show "Yee-Haw!" It was a comedy variety show that functioned as if the characters from "The Beverly Hillbillies" did SNL. As the production moved along on the musical "Shucked" it was decided that the IP was unnecessary but they kept the generic rural comedy archetypes.
Hee-Haw, actually. It ran from ‘69 until the late 90s (which I find shocking). It was really only funny if you were high. Like really high. Like mid-1970s high. I can imagine the same is true for Shucked.
@@OneBentMonkey Oh, I should have double checked before I posted that! Thank you for catching my error. I am also shocked that Hee-Haw aired until the late 90's. It's weird to imagine someone watching a new episode of that show and then later that day catching the news to hear about the possibility of Y2K computer problems.
My guy, i would instantly start becoming a patron on patreon if you start reviewing musicals. Producers? Something Rotten? Carrie? Superman? Spider-Man Turn off the Dark? My guy, untapped market
Straight, middle-aged guy here and I love musicals! I’ve been seeing at least one a month so far this year. Going to see “Chicago” on Broadway next month. Unalive me before I end up going to anything related to Jimmy Buffett, ESPECIALLY a musical.
A really good original musical that I'd recommend is Ride the Cyclone. It was made in 2009(I think) and is still entertaining and relevant today. Six kids in the choir ride a rollercoaster that tragically runs off track at the apex of the loop de loop. A magical fortune telling machine predicts the children's death, but is unable to tell them. He gives them a chance to tell people not what they were, but what they dream to be. Ocean, the smartest girl in town, sings about how she is 'the best', and the only logical choice. Noel, the most romantic boy in town, sings about his longing for a life of tragedy, and taking on a persona of Monique Gibeau, A sex worker in post war France. Mischa, the angriest boy in town, sings about him aspiring to be a famous rapper, and about his fiance, and his dream to get married to her in his home country of Ukraine. Ricky, the most imaginative boy in town, sings about how he just wanted people on Earth to hear him, and his desire to have sex with sexy cat women from another planet. Constance, the nicest girl in town, sings about how it's okay to love your small town and embrace the small things in life. Jane Doe, the one unidentified body, sings about nog knowing where her soul is, and just wants someone to tell her who she is. One soul gets revived. Who will it be? Includes Ocean being everyone's least favorite character Noel and Mischa being gay Constance sticking up for herself(Go girl!) Ricky being a genius Jane Doe being a precious baby It's a tragic comedy, and even though I've seen a LOT of musicals, this one has been my going favorite for about to years, which is the longest streak I've ever had
As a huge musical theatre fan, I’m so happy you made this video! And I agree, there aren’t any original musicals anymore and not everything needs to be made into a musical
Sometimes musicals based on preexisting properties can still be filled with heart and passion, beetlejuice the musical is one of my favorite musicals of all time (next to Falsettos and StarKid’s Twisted) and it is like full of silly little jokes that make me giggle like a little boy and honestly I like it more than the original movie and the cartoon lol
Theres only one jukebox musical i enjoy and that is the boy from oz because they actually use the songs to tell a story and tell the story of peter alans life
I used to love acting, I loved to sing and dance and frolic on stage like there was no tomorrow. And I was darn good at it too. But, I got bullied out of it. My directors told me I could've made it to Broadway but I gave up before I could actually put myself out there. Moral of the story don't give up on your dreams even if you get called a fruit cake
i will say, just because something is an adaptation doesn’t mean there can’t be heart and passion behind it. the real problem comes when someone takes an already popular thing and tries to ride off that popularity instead of putting in any effort
I agree completely. Like Back to The Future The Musical, while not winning any awards, had so many people involved from Bob Gale (who co-wrote wrote the movies) to Alan SIlvestri (who did the orchestral score for the movies) that it was not a blatant cash grab. It did its job of making you feel closer to the movies than ever, and while some characters were a carbon copy of the movie the guy who played Doc Brown put his own spin on it so it was an homage because in his words he could never compare.
Honestly, some of my favorite musicals were adapted from popular movies. The comedy in Beetlejuice is top notch, the mature emotion in Heathers was fantastic, the high energy acting and choreo in Legally Blonde was very fun and well done, and the attitude and aesthetic of Mean Girls was great. And all of the music is incredible in all of them.
