Just an hour away from Tokyo in Saitama, Kawagoe's cobbled streets, well-preserved historical architecture, and nostalgic ambiance transport visitors back to a bygone era. Often referred to as ‘Koedo’ or ‘Little Edo,’ this charming city resonates with the spirit of Japan's Edo period.
Join Shizuka as she steps back in time and journeys to old-world Japan! The adventure begins at Kawagoe's iconic Toki no Kane bell tower, dating back to 1639. Next, our host craves Kawagoe-style street food, which she tracks down at Koedo Osatsuan, a shop known for its sweet potato chips dipped in cream!
Sweet tooth activated, Shizuka strolls to her next destination… Kawagoe Cheese Cake. But which flavor will she choose? Kawagoe Sweet Potato Cheese Cake Mont Blanc, of course! Fuelled and ready to continue the journey, Shizuka makes her way to an unagi (eel) shop, another Kawagoe specialty. She tried a regional delicacy called Umaki, which combines the words ‘unagi’ (eel) and ‘tamagoyaki’ (Japanese rolled omelet).
Seeking some solace from the summer heat, Shizuka searches for a snack to cool her down, which presents itself in the form of Kyuri Asazuke (chilled pickled cucumber). Our host strolls on to Kashiya Yokocho for some more nostalgic sweet treats. Stop number one is an 85cm Fugashi (a dried wheat gluten snack coated in sugarcane sugar). Stop two sees Shizuka try her hand at candy glass blowing! Stop three involves an ice cold Coedo Beer, the perfect way to end the day.

A kimono suits you.
Not practical.
But looks good on you!😉
Continue to Love the show!
This has got to be the realist unedited way from an American view but it's got the best host ever to make it seem normal with 10x worth the fun
My friend told me that I have to visit this place - this video sealed the deal.
You simply must!
i love how you show spots that are not as well known, at least i didnt know about this place!
❤❤❤ looking sooo good in a yukata Shizuka san..you made my day.
I’m in love
I want some of that unagi/tamago thing. It looks gooooooood!
perfect model in that dress!
I don’t think any of the TH-camrs I’ve been watching had ever featured Kawagoe. This is such an interesting video! Thank you for sharing about this quaint quintessentially “old Japan” place. Definitely a must-see for those who plan to go to Japan.
TabiEats likes to visit Kawagoe and they have several videos on Kawagoe street food and staying there. Because of them, Hawaiʻiʻs food vloggers Amanda & Felix Eats also made a video about the street food there.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Shizuka!
Shizuka 😍😍
Thank you for sharing the interesting trip.
Glad you enjoyed it
Coedo beer is great! My local beer seller had a few different beers from them, and we tried them all - loved each one!
We love it!
She said it!! And with emphasis too! Lol. You guys are awesome. Legume-inspired! Cheers ya'll.
Magic & Legendary Tokyo🤩
Sweet potato is a hit in Little Edo! It must be fun to dress up in a kimono and join the people stare at the "super-modified" vans pass by!🌝
Can't wait to come, to taste food, visit the places, to wear kimono and to hug beautiful one ❤😊
We look forward to having you here!
As to why this channel has only 128k subs is a mystery.
I have been watching Shizuka and her adventures in Japan for quite a while now and its entertaining, informative and fun to watch, i know of some channels with garbage content and they have way more subs, so what seems to be the problem here?
Thank you for your support!
Yay!!! Hello Shizzy. Hello Japan By Food. Cool video. 😊🖤🍻🍺
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for this video will definitely put it on the list to visit!
Yay!
着物すごく似合ってますね、美人で粋な、カッコイイ姉さんという感じ😊
Will be visiting Kawagoe in Oct. I hope to visit all the interesting shops you introduce in this episode.
Have fun!
8:55 with the lady popping out and in was kind of cute
Adding this to my ever growing bucket list that I'll dream of visiting.
The place looks touristy, but the food looks great.
Seeing this video, Imma gonna try to make this a day-trip during my visit to Japan in November.
It is worth the visit!
Watching Japan by Food is the best!
Shizuka-san just makes me so happy, love her personality 🥰❤️
Thank you so much for another aweosme video 🙇🏻♀️✨
God bless 🙏🏻
Our pleasure!
Shizuka-san is definitely an amazing and very friendly host. I like how she has intimate knowledge of both American and Japanese cultures as well.
8:55 - "what's going on?" So funny 🤣!
Lovely place, I havn't had sweets in years!
I hope to see you Shizuka when I go back to Japan 😊
Yay finally, you visited Kawagoe, I grew up in Kawagoe and I went to Kindergarten and elementary schools. I wish you visited Kameya for a Japanese traditional snack.
What a nice place! Next time we will give Kameya a try!
One of my fave videos! I'd definitely visit there.
Please do!
Shizukaaaaaaa
Oh I love unagi! Gotta go to Little Edo. Such a cute yukata, also!
Have been to kawagoe 3 times, recently went to their nearby sujino farm which has strawberry pickings for adults and kids. Fun experience!
Strawberry picking experience sounds fun!
Another great video - loving it!
Thank you for watching!
Love it!!😊
Love this channel
and of course Shizuka Anderson and her beer drinking, ice cream eating adventures !
Thank you for your support!
Been there a week ago. Pretty crowded even on weekdays. The Tobu discount pass from Ikebukuro is convenient and Tobu staffs were very nice. Definitely worth to spend a day there.
There is shop in Kawagoe where you can cook your own Senbei… I burnt my first attempt 😅… a fun place for a day trip
It takes practice:)
You guys did so well working with the crowds there, looked like fun 👍🌟🌟👍
It was a challenge!
I want to try these desserts! Thanks for the video, Shizuka! Hope to travel to Little Edo someday.
Please visit!
😋 All that food looks really good!
Nice place! Definitely will add this to my itinerary for next Japan trip! Thanks for the info Shizuka & Japan By Food! Always the best channel about Japan.
Thank you for your support!
🥔I want to eat the best combination of pear chips and ice cream 🍨😀
That place is amazing!
Thank you for exploring somewhere other than Inner Tokyo. I lived in Tokyo but spent most of my free time away from there. There is so much to see. The real Japan is not in big cities.
We absolutely agree!
Your yukata looked so amazing. Beautiful colours and design. I would love to try the sweet potato chips with the cream. The texture and shape are so cool I'd love it even if the taste didn't knock me off my feet.
Don't know why, when she explained the the reason those buildings survive while others were destroyed brings tears in my eyes
History can be sad
I love your kimono! 🥰 👘
Thank you!
went Uji recently after seeing your video and I wasn't disappointed! will definitely go Kawagoe next time next! love that you show all these places outside of kyoto and tokyo that are not as crowded!
Oh thank you!! So glad you enjoyed the places we went to! 😍🥰
Very interesting town, let us promote Kawagoe over Australia and NZ. Oh..and fantastic reporting, Shizuka-san!
I look forward to seeing each video so much!
wow very nice content friend
confirmed Shizuka is a vampire and does not age, she looks the same as she did 3 years ago in past videos.
Beautiful place! Have added it to our list to visit next time we go to Japan! ❤
Man wish we had more time during our trip in July would have love to come here seems better and less crowded than Kyoto. Great video as always.
It is worth the visit BUT it can get super crowded over the weekends:)
Lol thats in front of my house 😆 🤣 😂
:O Sorry about that :D
all good i wish i was outside to see you!@@JapanbyFood
living next to tokinokane is a blast@@JapanbyFood
"Unagui" - Geller, Ross.
damn my ex lives around corner from that street lol used to visit a lot, very nice spot
Shizuka as always a great vlog
Will be in Japan on a tour this summer…. not a big fish eater… so it looks like omelettes and pancakes for me.
A lot of meat and pork options if you're not big on fish. Fast food places like sukiya, matsuya, or yayoiken will have you covered for cheap.
Everyone looked like tourists, with the exception of Shizuka and her classic elegant yukata.
Such a very detailed and delightful trip you had to the old town.
Lovely wooden houses 🏘 with plenty of food stalls for all of the unquie Japanese food ❤.
Greetings from England 🇬🇧 Simon and Beth ❤️ 😀 🙋
Great energy very good speaker . Amazing content ..Also props to the camera guy..good eye guy...girl?
love japan
Another great video I want some candy now
9:08 Smirking for her stalker. Haha so funny!
I just visited Kawagoe a few days ago and I can tell you it's definitely worth a visit :D
We never been to kawagoe!!! Looked so cool love the old charming buildings there!!!! 👍🏻

It is worth the visit!
Video-bomb at 8:56. 😂
Few of those intresting items weren't in my list. thanks for the update Shizuka. 🙌
Glad you like them!
9:08 surprise tokyo creative sarah cameo
That is our producer Eli:P
Damn i want sweet potato now. Also, I want to make a joke about shizuka blowing and licking but youtube is such a prude these days.
Another destination added to the list! :D
Hope you enjoy it!
I've been there during a festival. I bought very spicy Sembei, and drank Coedo beer with blue label.
8:56 haha hello there maam
I wish you and Ellie to do a segment or series someday! 🥰
Maybe one day!:D
👍👍
The videos are great ! What are sweet potato fritters with spring onions called in Japanese please?
It's in my list, for the Edo era architecture. Where is my bell? 😁
(no, not that one, the Toki no Kane...)
Could you do a show on the anime called Isekai izakaya nobu? it's an amazing anime about food!
hi! hello im edtha roco coming frm mindoro phillipines
Are the Kawagoe shops & area open 7 days a week? I will be going on a Tues or Wed in August.
The stores should be open most of the week but it is worth checking out beforehand. Candy Alley closes very early so make sure not to miss it!
@@JapanbyFood Thank you. 😊
I'm awed by your context. I ear 🍣 in Toronto Canada 🇨🇦, it's not that good, but they charge so much money. About a $100.
It's so strange to see people walk down the streets of Japan and think it's so normal. I know that when you are born in a place you think everything is normal, but my dream is to go to Japan and I would spend HOURS and HOURS just sitting in one spot enjoying the city's urban life. Whatever it is. I love Japan!
It’s easy. Go anywhere. The behaviors and likes of the gaijin TH-camrs have ZERO in common with normal life here. Why are they so childish? If you know why, please share. Pathetic is the word that comes to mind.
How old are you? 6?
Shizuka's blue yukata 👘 is very nice. Thank you for the always fun video.🎉
待ってますよ、早く来てね☺
@@snooglypathetic is spouting racial slurs on TH-cam at anyone let alone people who are just trying to appreciate your culture. Say thank you for stimulating much needed tourism funds and go eat some ramen old man.
Was that Seerasan?
Can anyone tell me the name of the music that started on 9:13
8:30 It looks like a styrofoam prop 😄
There is a Lil Wayne reference in this video...😂💖🙏
Is there?:D
@@JapanbyFood oh man..... I guess it was on accident then ☺️ it is a simple phrase that doesnt have to be reference, but.... the part about "lick it like a lolipop" ! It definitely caught my attention and for some reason struck me as an intentional reference lol. I love all of your videos always, please perpetuate and proceed FOREVERRRR 😂🙏🌷💙
I'm thinking about how Japan can provide fresh and delicious 🍳 food. Apart from cooking, go to the drugstore or the supermarket just before closing.
There are a lot of cheap and 😂good products.
Looking forward to see a vegan food tasting in the near future✨✨✨✨
Let's just hope that there is more to do than to eat in this city.
Some good record cafes, and some great shops if you're into gaming and media. But yeah a lot of kawagoe is just food. The beer is great (coedo beer)
Also beautiful architecture and history!
@@JapanbyFood That's good, because nobody needs to be going for soggy omelettes or pickles on a stick.
@@mikeymutual5489 haters gonna hate. You can also get some pretty good pizza and nepali food out there too if you absolutely cannot stomach Japanese food on your visit to Japan.
Garlic source or lemon or beaf)
Those Balloon candy is a scam paying somebody for candy but you're doing 80% of the work🤣
But it is fuuuun!:P
The title says Kawagoe is 30 min away from Tokyo, but you mention at the beginning of the video that it's an hour away. Wondering why title says it's 30 min away....is this an error?
It depends on which direction your going...🤣👈👉🙏
It depends on what part of tokyo you're in. Its about 30-40 mins on the tobu line from Ikebukuro station.
@@MightyMoose2000 good point, depends on where you depart from Tokyo.

You can go there by a rapid train:)
