This why more vocal coaches and singers should be more open minded when training their voices . It's s better not to fit students into a box, but rather aid them in achieving their full potential.
0:02 OMG Patti's tone back then😍. I need to listen to her entire old discography asap !
I have a video showcasing her range back then.
That was her best era tbh
So pretty❤❤❤
gospel singers never cease to defy voice type expectations
Its the holy ghost moving thru em! 😁
TRULY!
Same as R&B.
Unlike Mariah.
@@jantralee5800 xd
That A2 from Lisa is SO!!! Good!! 😍
Isaac Hayes singing Bb5s better than many sopranos is sending me. I just can not 😵 floored
As always, a video lesson to keep your ears open!
I love this video series.
A video suggestion is a series to learn how to differentiate the registers that certainly cause confusion: Head Voice, Flageolet and Whistle.
An accurate and different video from those on TH-cam because I really like your videos and I learn a lot!
You should include Jaya in the next part. She's a mezzo who can sing lines aroud G5-A5. She covered Through the Fire many times singing in the same key as Chaka.
Finally you included one of my favorite gospel pioneer, the high preachers the late Ms Inez Andrew❤️❤️but i think the older she get,she become an contraltro that able to soar at high A❤️❤️
but please @Kaji do Ms Inez Andrews vocal range video i'm begging you
She never became a contralto. Ironically her highest notes are all from her 70s.
The fact that you started out with the young QUEEN says everything!
Labelle/ Rachelle/amazing/ all of them amazing.
Great examples of different voices in this new part of the series! Now it should be clear that just the range means nothing to classify voice types 😂
I hope we'll see vocal range videos upon these singers too 😊
fr, im a tenor that can sing F#2 - G5 but B2 - B4 is where I shine
I feel like thats most Tenors tho 😁
@@grandeflamesbutera3949 i mean thats just my chest/mixed belt range, I've done high falsettos and whistles
@@EquinoXshowcasesyeah its normal. I can mix up to a G5 at times & then sustain C6’s with proper warm ups. Its normal for a tenor to be able to mix & have a head voice
Normal for Antoine with a voice haha @@grandeflamesbutera3949
I think I’m on the higher side of tenors these videos have helped explain a lot but I don’t know for sure I just sing and do what I do as a singer!❤️🎤
Lisa Fischer's lower register improved a lot in the last decades.
It did but it was always quite good I’d say. Her lower range is less age-related and more repeated use related.
This video really help me to find my real voice type, I was really confused If I am a Baritone or Tenor
because my full vocal range is Bb1 ~ Bb6. Now I believed that I am a Tenor with extensive lows I guess.
It is determined by your chest range, tessitura, and passaggio.
@@bradycall1889 yeah ik, my highest belt was D5(i just rarely go in 5th octave)
@@resen0901 Yes then you're likely a tenor as you've said.
passaggio is the most defining feature. with low notes the connected range is a giveaway but a lot of people dont even hit their natural bottom. you have tenors with D3 and baritones with A2
I hope more people would realize that you don’t conclude someone’s vocal type based on their vocal range but on where their voice sits
0:40 impressive Bb5, I don't think he's either fluting or whistling. Some male singers' head voices are sort of misplaced, compared to their chest voices. Ivan Rebroff is another example.
I think I see what you’re saying… What do you mean by misplaced?
@@gillianomotoso328having a much higher break point in head voice than one would expect. In his case, mezzo like.
Wait.. people think Rachel is anything else thats NOT!!! a Soprano?? 🤣🤣
Can you put their suproted range and if they resinate next time thank you❤
f(x) babes. simple
the way ik ur from tiktok just by this comment 😭
@@imNotZack_ Lol that's hilarious
Lady Gaga has recently showed her best upper belts, do you think she can go higher than a C6 in head voice? Is there any way to suppose that?
Everyone is capable of notes past C6 with practice.
@dominicwileman I only know her bad singing from duet with Shirley Bassey.
Lmao
Kaji, question for the Bill Medley one. When he and Bobby Hatfield were trading the D5s, why was Hatfield more audible despite being the higher voice? Aren’t baritones more naturally powerful?
It depends on which specific note you're talking about. Baritones will sound the most powerful in a lower range than tenors do.
@@bradycall1889 What I was trying to ask is that will a baritone normally sound bigger in all modal registers whether high or low, or did Hatfield sound more audible than Medley at D5 because it's more natural for him? Thanks.
@@NASA83268 At a D5 a tenor will resonate more than a baritone.
Man you gotta add Twinkie to the next one!
I think her low notes are a bit overrated 🫣
@@KajiVocals lol why??? She’s a high soprano who comfortably sing to G#2
@@reggiemitchell5198 G#2 comfortably? Unlikely. Show me please.
@@KajiVocals she’s only done it in a song but the lowest she’s gone is A2 while singing with Karen and singing O Come Emmanuel.
@reggiemitchell5198 I heard that A and would not call it ‘comfortable’.
Lisa!
This video just shows me that I'm not at my full potential yet.
Keep singing at your best
Im a countertenor my voice shines A4-E5 but my full range is F2-C#6 in the morning i can only do 2nd octave notes😭😭
But countertenor is debatable between a real voice type and a type of role within opera. Interestingly, I haven't made up my mind yet on whether or not it is an actual voice type. I am just hesitant to use that term to describe anyone. A lot of "countertenors" out there are actually baritones or at least regular tenors using falsetto.
@@bradycall1889 difference between me and the opera singers i dont use falsetto idk how but ive kept the range that had as a child just a tone or two lower tbh😭 like for example of i was to sing gladys knight i would sing her songs a note or 2 higher
@Darion567 You’re probably using M2 mix.
@@KajiVocals i agree but its like a chest mix i’ll say
@@Darion567 That’s not a real register.
Screaming Jay Hawkins has an easy Ab4
Ok Tim foust, Avi kaplan and Geoff castelluci. What is their voice types once and for all?
I miss being able to reach the 6th octave everyday 😔
Where the Bb5 and D6 from for Isaac Hayes
How did Isaac Hayes sing that high? I can only mix to an A5 and want to go higher
I think you should check out Casper Fox.
From which note(s) does the whistle voice start?
Whistles register has nothing to do with the notes it’s a specific singing technique.
I’m glad you brought this video up. Would Monica (RNB singer) be classified as a mezzo or soprano?
Monica is a Mezzo Soprano
She’s a very obvious soprano
I think I am a Soprano basing off of my similarities to Lisa.
Dey play o. You're not similar to Lisa my dear. Most singers aren't hunnie. Lisa's voice is in the stratosphere which only a handful of well trained talented voices are. Also Lisa is a coloratura and I'm more apt to conclude that you have not received any coloratura training. So your voice is not similar to hers. Though you can compare your voice to singers like Mariah (modal voice alone not whistles) and the rest to determine your voice type
@@progresseniola1606
Are you acquainted with each other? Regardless, I believe there might be a misunderstanding regarding the comment. It seems they were expressing the realisation that they share certain soprano characteristics with Lisa and that made them realise that they are more likely to be a soprano, rather than implying their voice is similar to hers in its height or training.
@@KajiVocalsYeah I thought the same too
@@progresseniola1606 Oh sweetie is that what u think I said? No I’m comparing tone and Range not like her and Rachael F could take her bfr.

Does anyone knows the song at 2.39 min that Bill Medley sings?
Would you classify Joss Stone as a low soprano or high mezzo?
Great video!
Do you know what is Seo Moontak's voice type?
I think he would find her similar to Vivian but he used to comment that he think Moontak could be a mezzo
3:28 Is that a Galli-Marié?
No. She is not a Galli-Marié mezzo-soprano. Her voice is very lightened and actually quite low-set. She is closer to contralto than soprano, which is ironic as later down the line she was retraining as a soprano. She spoke of it in 1980…. But then randomly stopped performing. Not sure what happened.
@@KajiVocals Oh okay
@@KajiVocals What about Lea Desandre?
Wait inez was a mezzo? I thought she was a soprano with a developed chest voice
Yes, always a mezzo. Never a high one either.
0:31
2:40 How can someone sing a good C2 and then go up to a decent (yet not that amazing) D5? We should have more singers like him.
In all fairness he does not have any clean notes past A.
@@KajiVocals Oh okay.
I fully believe that’s a matter of no technique however. If one can sing a note with distortion but back to back I have no reason to believe they couldn’t get it cleanly.
@@KajiVocals Yes indeed
The first thing to ask is if it's all chest voice. Some singers are deceptively good at singing vocal fry and/or mixed voice.
3:07 Is that mixed voice?
Yes. Although he can belt an E.
@@KajiVocals Wow he can sing E5 in chest voice?
Not very good but yes. He has a decent Eb5 belt in the song I Wanna Know. From his ‘Night and Day of SGH’ album.
@@KajiVocals 😳😳😳🤯🤯🤯

Did you grow up in the church or with your grandparents?!
??
@@KajiVocals it was a yes or no question. Your selection of musicians are individuals most wouldn’t be aware of unless they were in the church or had grandparents who exposed them to such artist.
Cmon Jay Hawkins
Who's singing at 00:00 ?
That's Patti Labelle.
@@KajiVocals Kaji, question for the Bill Medley one. When he and Bobby Hatfield were trading the D5s, why was Hatfield more audible despite being the higher voice? Aren’t baritones more naturally powerful?
4:00 squeaky
I don't think it's that squeaky. The bigger problem I find it being under the pitch.
@@KajiVocalsDo you know what makes H. Tourangeau a mezzo? I think she didn’t sound as heavy and dark in her vocal color to me. Is it her technique or something else that classified her as a mezzo soprano in opera?
@@ElyWillShe sang as a mezzo, but like most "mezzos" of her type, i.e., Verrett, Ludwig, Bumbry, Ludwig, Simionato, Stignani, Cossotto, Zajick, etc she was in all honesty a soprano.
@alleviation91 Huguette is definitely not a soprano. Her voice was quite low-set by all standards. Closer to contralto than soprano.
@@KajiVocals Sorry, but I just don't hear it. Amparan, Pally, or Edelmann would strike me as mezzos closer to contralto. Tourangeau doesn't sound altogether different from a darker voiced wagnerian soprano. That said, I never sat with her at a piano, so maybe she just lightened her tone, something some mezzos were/are known to do.
Can u tell me Faouzia p's voice type? Is she a Soprano.
Correct. It is a heavier voice however. Will likely become a mezzo-soprano down the line.
@@KajiVocals Oh okay. But since her voice is still developing could she turn from a soprano to more of like a darker soprano like Tina from Mary Mary or like a mezzo with an higher extended range?
@@whitneyhouston1122I believe she is already that. She just sings with a bright approach.
@@KajiVocals Ohhh!! Okay
1:18 Jessy Dixon isn't a tenor, he's an obvious contrabass. Nothing about his singing nor speaking says tenor. I have taught 75 different contrabass/oktavist voices and 100% all of them thought they were tenors at the beginning of training. Most "tenors" these days are really undeveloped contrabass voices (contrabasso contros). Try coming up with some logic other than a straw man. It's as easy as the equation f_0=c/2f and x=-b+or-sqrt(b^2-4ac)/2a because it is. Why would Dixon be able to vocalize at a C0, literally 16 Hz, when speaking and cause a nearby organ pipe nearby to resonate on accident?
Ironic as Dixon does have a loud E2.
@@KajiVocals Wait really?
Yes in his later studio albums. But live he did very good G2s and later down the line an ok Eb. His range is Eb to Eb.
@@KajiVocals Is he a heavier tenor?
Yes
For example, Whitney is a true sopranos whilst Mariah is not.
Mariah is indeed a soprano, just not really...well-developed, nor well-rounded, even at her really best
I do find Rachelle's way of singing very annoying, like she's always just showing of never just singing a line
I think you’ll like her more on her albums. Quite restrained there.
Yea listen to her albums. Plus because her background is jazz, scatt, composition so she uses her voice accordingly. He album first instrument says everything. She stretches and shows the capability of human voice to do everything in a song.
I thought I was the only who felt that way lol. She is amazing can probably out sing alot of people, and sometimes I do appreciate the extra what you don't get on the album. But I do find it to become annoying at a certain point, I love listening to the albums they are fire. Rachelle should have been bigger, but that's not mainstream material they like cookie cutter voices.
@shabrethajennings7291 she has a song called "individuality, can I be me?". So if that doesn't some it up. Everyone can't sing like whitney Houston or life would be boring. Look at American idol, they all sound like clones. I can't listen to these people. Rachelle is very different. I wish my voice could do half of what she could. She is the example to follow, she makes beats with her voice, can sound like numerous instruments etc. That's why she has the album called "first instrument" the industry is suppressing the human voice/instrument. This why she can basically shit on any singer on stage because she can literally do it all and more. She can sing with the greats such as wyntonMarsalis, george duke, etc and just do notes like an instrument, other singers would stand there and be lost..
