did you ever figure out how to get that pc case from japan?
I’m kinda weird. I like the more reflective screen more. Color vibrancy seems better too. I don’t own a steam deck but I’ve seen comparison videos.
lol the giveaway isnt supported to my country
I live in finland ( europe ) and well... sure im blocked by all us things
Maybe steam will offer "upgrade" motherboard to switch to a 6800u ? would be so great.
1440p screen next?
The confidence of a man who already has a replacement steam deck on the way
I was hoping it was something like an OLED screen replacement.
Not possible he would have to find a screen with the exact same dimensions and same connection and power specification , same size and length of wire,
Yeah, just applying a non reflective screen protector with some extra steps and expenses.
@@malathomas6141 I'm sure some company would have manufactured it just for steam deck.
Maybe later down the line. It's alittle too soon for 3rd parties
@@kajoma1782 Absolutely think Valve will make an OLED/QD-OLED screen model and then with their partnership with Ifixit actually ship you the screen so you can technically upgrade your previous model
Pro Tip: Instead of using the fat pick to break the adhesive from the screen, use a laminated playing card. Laminated cards are stiff, thin and provide much more surface area you can force between the adhesive. As an added bonus, you can use multiple cards to keep the screen from resealing to the adhesive.
Great to see how this is done, personally I would only do this if my screen was cracked or an OLED screen becomes available
Oled is the next step for Steam boyz...that will be dope
@@blastu2fool without it it's a piece of crap. IPS with 400 nits XD my phone from 2016 have better display
@@Fioletowooki it's not only the screen you're buying on either is it, and the steam deck screen is more than adequate for the purpose, can your phone from 2016 play most of your steam library?
@Δ they're already taking a loss for the price it's going for. It's not going to have the best screen available, the best cpu and gpu combo, ect ect. The price to performance is one of the best in the gaming industry, if you want the best of everything and you have an unlimited budget to splurge on a handheld get a gdp win, Aya neo, or onexplayer.
@@roboteen I do think they hit the sweet spot on every component though, price/performance-wise.
And all the input options are just bliss
Pro tip: you can get an etched glass screen protector that will be just as good for $20.
The problem with the etched glass screen is that a screen protector probably won’t adhere to it nicely. so you lose the ability to protect it properly.
Just make sure you don’t cheap out when buying the screen protector. Because some “matte” screen protectors feel like sandpaper or are made of cheap plastic.
You want something like a MagGlass anti-glare tempered glass screen protector.
JSAUX glass protectors are great and are only 10 bucks. I am using one myself. And there are two protectors in one box)
If only someone could make a 1280x800p OLED display that matches the steam decks screen dimensions and the same strips so it'll work with the steam deck.
HOW NOBODY DOES THIS. THE MONEY THEY WOULD MAKE
@@yoruneko34 Look up DeckHD
It'd be cool to see someone build a Steam Deck from scratch using the replacement parts
When?
@@MostlyLost yeah you can't buy the 3.5mm audio jack board either
I'll save this video in case they start selling OLED screens for vanilla Steam Deck
I wonder if some custom oled screens will be available for steam deck
Hopefully one day.
That will certainly be my upgrade for my own Steam Deck though until then, I will stick to my etched display for now.
This would legitimately be a much bigger deal than the matte screen, which is not that big of a deal and goes away if you use a screen protector anyway. A bigger screen with smaller bezels and proper brightness and black levels would be a big, big upgrade.
Hey man just wanna say thank you I was able to follow each one of your steps since you simplified it down for everyone and now I'm a proud owner of a matte screen on my steam deck!! Took me about 30 mins following your video!! Thank you didn't even run into any problem boom power on screen on!!
What I'd love to see is a 1080p screen replacement, and one that spans the entire space that's there, no black border space around the screen.
When that hits, it's probably a new console version. So dont count on it for this console version.
Next install the Switch OLED Screen into the Steam Deck!
Appreciate the thorough video. However, I'd say that with the cost of the screen, the cost of a larger ssd, the time and risk involved with pulling the deck apart makes the delta I spent on the 512 more than worth it. It is good to know though that if something breaks or if the screen cracks, repairs are doable by us mere mortals.
The screen isnt worth it, He is on crack, people dont the steam deck for the anti glare screen. If anything the lower model screen is better, because the display is brighter. People buy the upper model for storage.
You do risk killing the steam deck through static discharge, even if you remove the battery.
@@triadwarfare That risk is so minuscule it's not worth mentioning. Stop spreading misinformation and fear.
@@poipoi300 hopefully it’s true my screen has dead pixels and I want to replace it with a anti glare screen but I’m not trying to destroy my deck
@@Upassmexican Static discharge won't be an issue. Make sure you're able to do the rest of the operations without physical damage and you'll be fine.
Thanks for trying this! I bought a matte screen protector and it made it look so much better. except two dust particles stuck between the display and the protector. This was my second attempt and now I can buy another set and another one in attempt to get a 100 percent clean installation or I buy the replacement screen.
Honestly, with how little power the Steam Deck draws you could even use the carbon fiber sheets that TG sells (Carbonaut) and most likely get pretty good thermals out of it (also it’s reusable so you wouldn’t have to worry about replacing thermal paste every time you took the cooler off). Electrical conductivity would be a problem still if you don’t cut it and place it right, but it’d be less risky and also safer for the APU die than liquid metal as with liquid metal you have to worry about not using enough or using too much, and also how it may potentially eat away at the surface of the die over time.
I'd kill for a OLED screen upgrade, also I would prefer the glass screen but I wanted the larger capacity so I picked that, reason for that is that the mat finish absorbs all light instead of directly reflecting it, this makes high contrast colors not to look as vivid as ona glass screen.
u bought that shit with ips screen? XD My phone from 2016 has better than STEAMDECK XD
@@Fioletowooki your phone from 2016 could not run crysis or cyberpunk
@@blakewixom2893 still it's a phone not skateboard with ips.
@@Fioletowooki well being the owner of both the Deck and OLED switch its not a deal breaker. The deck still looks great plays great. Sure I would love to see a OLED option but that's not going to happen at $400
@@relicgamer2137 well i don't care. No oled no money. Also that uncomofortable button layout only made by steam and size of a skateboard. I can only imagine that u are playing at a skateboard in a bus.
This was actually a surprisingly easy repair to do. Took me about an hour.
Did you was scared at first ?
I’m getting my 512 this weekend and i would spend $150 more on top of the $640:00 instead of doing all of what you just did .
Not to mention the extra storage!
But neat that steam is one of few companys that gives you the right 2 repair
All your videos on the Steam Deck has so been fun to watch Brett!
You know what. Just apply a matte screen protector and save the hassle
Watching you go through this installation made me glad I sprung for the higher end one. 😂
That olan rogers reference startled me raw!!
an OLED screen that has a thinner bezel would be fantastic. light sensor could be covered but i dont really mind that. adaptive brightness isnt something i really care about. manual brightness is usually what i do anyway.
You can just buy a Glare free Screen protector for the steam deck and it will have the same affect and also protect the screen.
it may slightly degrade the visual quality tho and touch sensitivity may be slightly reduced. but that's also what i will do, just reserved the 64gb model on which i will replaced the disk by an ssd and put on a simple screen protector.
I've gotta say, been loving your latest content, super fun, informative, nice ideas... Keep it up!!!
Hey Frank, what do you want for diner!! Eeeeer get me a Steam Deck, well done! 😂
Can't wait for an OLED screen to come out!
I get it if you damage your screen why not "upgrade," but if not then just get an anti-glare screen protector and have the best of both worlds. If you use the touch capability of the screen a lot then you are going to eventually make the screen lose its anti-glare ability over time anyways. I think a gloss screen will end up being the better choice in the long run because of this.
You can literally buy a nice protector for a tablet for around $10~$20 and cut it to size or even find one that is made for the deck. No need to open your expensive toy and risk doing something detrimental to its health if you don't need to.
The gloss screen actually looks way better indoors much crisper clearer colors but under light the matte looks way better I personally like the gloss screen way better I have both 64 gig and 512 but now my 64 gig is 1tb
You save less than $100 because the 500 gb ssd is between $50 to $80 which will make the base model basically equal to the expensive one. Now for those who are less experienced with repair ask yourself if the risk of destroying your steam deck to save about $80 is worth it?
Absolutely, at the risk of totally wrecking your brand spanking new Steam Deck to save $80.oo dollars, just isn't worth it for me and probably others. Also, running games off of an SD Card means that your Internal Storage is going to be used for Pre-Cached Shaders. I applaud Valve for giving users choice and making it easier for those of us who don't want to tinker that much with the Steam Deck.
Now back to ricing my Linux desktop.
Yoooooo what you fixed my pc a couple weeks ago!!! You work at PC Doctor don't you???? My power button disconnected and you guys fixed it
Just so that you know, you can get two matte finish tempered glass screen protectors for your steam deck for only around $20
Valve really should've figured out a different mounting system for their display. It's cool that they're selling parts but they need to glue things down less. Maybe with the Deck 2 they'll sort this out.
Indeed, it can always be improved. Though credit to Steam where credit is due as the battery is the only other thing glued down IIRC, and this screen looks easier than many smartphones and tablets
Buying the cheapest steam deck I thought was the best value...in come the $200 2tb ssd, $50 anitglare screen portector, $100 skins, $80 joystick replacement...I spent $1000 on the steam deck in total....idk if I have buyers remorse or I'm a glutton for punishment. My credit score is crying at me 😂😂😂😂😂
couldn’t you just apply a matte screen protector?
They should make an OLED screen replacement.
You were basically in the exact same group as me. My steam deck is coming in this week as well.
Just finished my shell swap. Ended up messing up the screen. I'm about to order a new screen now. The shell looks good, though.
I was hoping for a OLED replacement screen mod. I bought two decks specifically to mod one. I basically been playing xcloud on it which gives you the best graphics, best performance, battery life etc.
I just need a OLED screen!! Lol
Before cracking your case open, get your battery down below 20% and enable battery storage mode ya'll
The matte screen s why I didn't buy the top end one. Once you put on a screen protector, it isn't matte anymore, but the layer below it is. That sounds gross.
I need an OLED replacement soooo bad
he used to be able to see the clouds outside, but now he can see cloud outside
Thanks for the video. With new 1TB SSDs coming out in Jan ‘23 for around $150 on Amazon, I was considering just getting the base model and replacing the screen and SSD. This would put the cost at roughly the same as the 512GB model with far more storage. After watching most of this video I think I’d either keep the base screen or just get the 512GB for the screen. I’d probably swap out the SSD later on either model. While I have worked on my own devices before I don’t think I’d care for this hassle.
Pointless replacing the screen.
*you save 150 buck going the diy route*
the extra storage is worth that much imo. i mean a sd card is nice and does the job well, but they only come in a max of 1tb, and the extra 512 really helps.
Cant we just get a matte screen protector... Which i assume dbrand sells
They're only matte glass ones are on Amazon and for some reason applying them is harder than it should be unless you don't mind the corners not sticking down. I actually bought a regular matte screen protector for a laptop and cut it to size.
@@MobileDecay I would argue that's a hell of a better problem to have.
Feel like this would only make sense if I'm getting a 1080p or 1440p screen out of it or something. Mostly useful for retro titles though.
I wouldn’t say that matte screen is an obvious choice. The way it reflects light is peculiar at best. I have a ProArt matte monitor and the effect looks much better on it even when comparing with screens off
Wouldnt it be smarter to just buy a anti glare screen protector?
when testing liquid metal, can you please use the new unopened deck? so that we can see if it's worth as an upgrade from the original paste? it would be also cool if you could first test replacing thernal paste with some other one
Great video, it will be very helpfull for people that will replace the screen
Man that would be freaking cool if they let you upgrade to OLED.
Heads u0, if you need to replace your analog thumbsticks, don't get the iFixit ones, get the Gulikit Steam Deck sticks as they're hall effect sensors and don't have the longevity problems that come with the Alps potentiometers the Steam Deck uses.
It was a missed opportunity for Steam to move the consoles forward with hall effect sensors, but at least it's just a cheap upgrade away.
Thanks for a really helpful video. It is really timely as SteamDeck are bringing out replacement full 1080p screens for the stock 800p screens for $99, that apparently the SteamDeck owner will have to replace themselves. Well done on the choice of subject at this time!
This video released a year ago. I agree that it's good, but it's way early lol
would you say this is a good thing to consider to get rid of screen bleeding ?
I wonder if they'll ship OLED screens in the future?
This is great, but I just bought an anti-glare screen protector.
good on steam to basically say: "We don't recommend doing this.... but in case you do, here is the place where you can buy the things to do it and if you mess it up, that's on you."
5:15... I think those square divisions in the i-fixit kit could be used to keep your screws sorted...
So now make an OLED replacement screen, please :D
Now if someone would make an oled replacement display
Flippin awesome! Thank you so much for making this content
This was a great video. the instructions are awesome. I fixed my machine without issue, thank you :)
We need screen upgrades with less of a border around the screen. I love my steam deck but the borders around the display are big
Might get an OLED screen part with reduced bezels once Steam Deck 2 drops
I bought the $650 model. And I am happy I did. But that being said, I have been really hoping ifixit or somebody else will drop an OLED screen. If they do, I will buy it.
I realize it will use more power. But it won't use much more, and I get 12+ hours of play with my preferred way to use the system anyways. (streaming AAA games.)
Would it not make more sense to just get matte glass screen protectors? No need to void a warranty that way. If they don't make such a thing then they should.
This is extremely risky for the majority of regular gamers (not experts in hardware tech repair). I'd only recommend a screen replacement for a moderately damaged/cracked screen rather than upgrading a regular 64/246 GB Screen Ver. for a Matte Screen (512GB Screen Ver.)
Though, I would highly recommend that people who bought 64GB ver. upgrade their storage from 64 GB eMMc to 1TB NvMe m.2 2330 storage (do good research on which one you want for price-performance). It is an extremely simple procedure that does NOT require you to be an expert in hardware tech repair. You can find a lot of tutorials all over TH-cam or other platforms. Just thoroughly take time to learn the procedure and be gentle with the components as you work through it. Good luck!
Dude I have something I would LOVE you to do. I'm desperate for someone to have another go at adding a beefy external heatsync, like what Linus and Alex did, but locate it centrally on the back between the thumb grips. Do a proper job with less jank! ha.
Think we'll see an oled version this year 3rd party? If so do you think it'd be worth the swap?
If it's OLED probably worth it
"I can see the clouds!"
*Plays FF VII Remake, so there's actually Cloud on screen!* =P
"I can still see the 'Clouds' "
I see what he did there...
I’m guessing there is a screen protector that does close to the same thing?
At this rate I'll just put a matte screen protector on mine when I get it on October. So than I'll kill two birds with one stone, protect my screen, and have a matte finish haha.
It would be a cool touch if the screen pick had a little mark on it at 1/8th inch so you don’t go in too far. Just a little touch.
I'll just use my matte screen protector. 😉
Still happier to have the faster memory with the 512GB model but I had a decent area of white/dead pixels with a white halo or aura around it noticeable only against black or darker colored backgrounds.
Playing Gloomwood made this immediately noticeable, so after owning it for only 3 days I already sent it back for RMA.
It should be received by Valve on Dec 7th, so we'll see how long it takes to get it back home.
I hope they just replace the screen because I was stoked to get a Deck with a quiet fan (meaning not the high pitched Delta model fan).
The other issue I had was the left thumbstick had some grinding/resistance between the 12 o'clock and 4 o'clock positions.
That issue seems to be fairly common when browsing Reddit.
Min has a similar problem at the top(light bleed) it's the only reason I was looking to replace the screen with the etched one. I might in a few months.
Did the replacement fix your issues?
This is great, now I can buy the highest storage option and not have to deal with a matte screen ruining the sharpness and contrast.
For warming the screen, a low temp heat gun would work better.
cant wait to see the oled mod on steam deck.
You also missed why people want 256gb is the nvmc ssd instead of emmc storage chip. It’s much faster.
Great content! Is that a Samsung monitor behind you?
Buying the cheapest model, then buying the screen and same internal sdd the expensive model has will save you about $50. (The prices as is when looked up at time of me posting this)
Honestly I'd rather just pay them the $50 than go through all that myself.
So basically if you have the money, just get the expensive one. If you don't just buy the cheapest model, get a relatively cheap anti reflective screen protector and and decent SD card. Or just wait and save
Interesting video either way
Id like to see a screen preplacement that is oled and bigger filling the black gap.
Save $150? That's easily $200 of labor my guy! 😂
Cool video nonetheless!
You don't save $150.. that's completely ignoring the 512GB NVME. Also the maybe bricking your deck, or the time and stress for doing this upgrade? Or am I crazy?
I'm not ignoring it. I mentioned the path that most people take is to just get a high capacity microSD even if they get the 512GB version.
@@UFDTech Yeah but you are saying that if you get the $399 model you can purchase the better screen on the $649 model and save $150. That doesn't account for the time/risk/stress of taking apart the $399 model to put in the screen. And you still arent "saving" anything if the benchmark of what money is saved is the $649 model which ALSO HAS a 512 NVME.
Cmon dude, you know what im saying. Im not gonna eat your lunch over it, but its not a good stance and not good advice.
@@UFDTech hello?
It'd be cool if they put out an oled screen.
In no way was the matte screen the reason I upgraded to the 512 model. It was because of the 512 GB of extra storage and I know a lot of people ordered it because of that reason. Come on man. Grand misrepresentations like this are a huge turnoff. If you don't know what you're talking about, do us a favor and stay in your lane.
I think gloss screens look better, even when there is light around. But hopefully can upgrade to oled.
Hi ufd., do you still have screen bleed on your new screen replacement?
Looks way easier than doing a case and screen swap on a switch lite. I could do it
Aftermarket OLED screen replacement would of been sweet
What I like about the steam deck outside of being a handheld pc is that the replacement part are actually cheap.
Just waiting for someone...to make an OLED screen that can be swapped out for the stock screen.
1:15 microsd cards are fine for low-performance, light games. They will stutter alot when trying to play anything AAA or current-gen.
It's so cool that everything is replaceable but watching this video makes me wish they just had an extended warranty with quick replacement. I could do this and I 10000% want the option to do so, but I'm happy to just pay for a replacement after watching the display removal. I would screw this up so bad! haha
I'll probably just end up getting a matte screen protector
Talk to me when you have OLED replacements
Waiting for a OLED 3rd party to drop, I am sure someone working on it. It's a gold mine if their not.
I'm confused what makes the screen replacement better?
