      My Honda is pretty much FSD on highways so cross country would be an easy thing for it; I’m only required to jiggle the steering wheel to keep it going.
      It has a special cruise control for city driving so it can surely handle stop and go traffic although I work in the suburbs so anything more would definitely be a waste.

      @martindbp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@jasonk125 He does come off a bit as wanting a particular answer. But there's no "there" to get to that is really that comparable. If the question is whether Tesla or Waymo/Cruise will get to L5 robotaxis, Waymo/Cruise already won by some definition. And with a massive effort maybe they could scale out to most major cities, but there are so many question marks: how much manual work is there in expanding to a new area? Of course the mapping process has to be highly automated, but I bet there is still a ton of manual work and QA done for each mile of road being mapped. Then what's the cost of keeping those maps updated at all times? Next problem is, can they reduce the cost and energy consumption of their hardware? The latter will be very important if they want to base it on an EV. And who's going to make their custom EVs really? It's going to take years to sort out a partnership. And if they're massively profitable would the partner accept that? Then there's the upfront cost of producing these taxis, they'd have to be pretty sure the economics work out before taking that on (or borrowing at today's higher interest rates).
      Due to the vertical integration and scale of EV production, large fleet and gradual upgrade of an ADAS system to L4 over many years, I predict Tesla will reap a vast majority of the profit from self-driving cars for many years to come.

    • @beck99o
      @beck99o 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@martindbp Good points. Waymo/Cruise have the big issue of the upfront cost of their taxis + ongoing costs of maps etc. So they will have to charge a decent amount for rides to start making back that money. It could be years before they break even and then profit may not be massive for them. In the mean time, if Tesla solve consumer FSD, they could take market share of taxi rides in those cities as they would be able to charge less.
      Will be interesting to see how things go over next 5 years, I think we all want self driving cars to be a thing and if there are multiple options it will only be good for all of us. Competition always benefits the consumer.

    Your conversations with James Douma are always worthwhile.
    I have high hopes for FSD as a Tesla owner and shareholder, but I fear it's a harder problem, and will take longer, than many expect. I drive between Boston and northern Vermont, 189 miles each way, almost every week. It's virtually all rural Interstate driving with relatively little traffic and in nearly ideal driving conditions. I tried using Autopilot during the first few weeks after I bought the car last year, but gave up on it. I just had to fight it too much (passing an 18-wheeler, for instance, where I'm trying to give it extra space by moving to the left edge of my lane, but AP insisting I stay much closer to the truck in the center of my lane, then shutting down due to my fighting it too often). I always use cruise control to avoid going too fast, but I find it very frequently does startling slowdowns for no reason. Last week it dramatically slowed from 75 - I looked at the screen and for some reason it thought the speed limit had dropped to 35 when it was actually 70. Fortunately there was no one behind me. (The speed limit was never 35 there, and I was nowhere near another road or exit. It clearly had the correct speed limit the prior dozens of times I drove that segment of Interstate highway, so I have no idea why Tesla thought it had changed.)
    Does anyone know how much of the tech for FSD is being incorporated in AP and cruise control? Maybe I'm being unfair when I take strange behavior like this as a sign that Tesla's software, and therefore FSD, has a long way to go.

      10x is just from the car business over the next 5-10 years. FSD is 100x. The robot is 1000x. And general human level AI is 10000x or more. These are just order of magnitude estimates of course.
      But there's an issue which breaks the math. Once the humanoid robot gets really good, it will replace most human workers, not just blue collar. Then the cost of labor in general will converge to zero. And since our current concept of money is based on labor, that will disrupt the concept of money itself. Regarding safety. Yesterday coming over a hill toward twilight there was a bicyclist riding at the edge of the road, against traffic, wearing black. My Model 3 saw him before I did and reasonably swerved over the yellow line to avoid him. The car saw there was no oncoming traffic so going over the yellow line was just right.

      I cycle the roads of Cornwall (England), that has narrow roads, and tight bends. Every year, too many cyclists die here - drivers typically drive too fast, and don't pay enough attention. I can't wait for FSD to make roads safer.

    The value proposition for FSD in the commercial trucking space would seem to be huge because the cost benefit of eliminating the driver is objectively determinable and competition will drive this cost benefit. Whereas in the private vehicle space the value proposition is more subjective and more subject to individual convenience/safety preference. For example, I am 80 y/o and really would appreciate having an FSD chauffeur relieve me of driving stress on a long trip as compared to when I was in my 20’s looked forward to the thrill of driving/control. For me those days are long gone…

      Full stack big #11. What is needed to accomplish this? What does James think 11 is released? Given his current drive, it was cool to hear about the road curvature and surfaces as a technical calculation to be solved even more. How does the computer see (interpret) vs how we see vs what is displayed? I love the technical stuff as well as the big picture. I think everyone watching wants the big prize of self-driving cars to happen. What do you and James think about these version 10 updates? They look very sharp. Each incremental update seems to add more personality to the car. Watching Frenchie, Dirty Tesla, and Chuck Cook videos for the last two years has really helped me understand each incremental improvement. I'm very bullish on pure vision. James is right that Tesla's data they hold onto is the big story. We as consumers/drivers are just seeing the results of their hard work. Love your patience and thoughtfulness Dave and how you always let the guest be the star of the episode. Keep kicking butt. I understand Q2 had some issues, but currently FSD beta is looking better and better. So much to look forward to these next 6 months. Andrej will be coming back, #11 has to be getting close, eyes on the prizes; Tesla can whether any storm.

      When FSD is ready to generally release, its usefulness will be obvious. As smart as the TESLA sale and marketing is, will they reset the sale price of FSD to anticipate the new demand? If FSD is real later or sooner, why would you not want to lock in today's 'low' price? (Do you not want to take this risk?)

I expect FSD will just default to very low speeds (like humans do) in those very rare cases. Thanks

    One thing tesla could do better is add external audio sensors. They are using the internal microphone in the vehicle for detecting external sounds like emergency vehicles but then you get sound from the vehicle occupants. I think external audio pickups would help. Other than that the tesla approach of using a vision based system is the right one for sure.

    James Douma is wonderfully engaging on the topic of FSD. He really knows what’s up…
    I live in Mendocino.
    That highway, 128, …is not fun to drive. It is a pretty drive thru wine country…but the driver, of course, has to watch the road.
    It is tiring…So…I can’t wait to have my Model 3 and to turn it loose around here. Exciting, thrilling even, is the thought.
    I would have been quite exited to see James having lunch in our little town.

      Even though I've purchased all of the Tesla equipment, except for a vehicle and the tequila, I'm holding off on buying a car until they've greatly improved FSD. Which probably means new camera, sensors, further forward on the cars and probably an improved computer too. My model Y with FSD had so many extreme phantom breaking issues that I couldn't use FSD or even cruse much of the time on our trip to Denver from Rapid City and back over the past weekend. The breaking with absolutely no reason was abrupt and extreme at least two dozen times.

    Tesla bot prototype today likely identify e.g. humans, dogs, vechicles and react to them correctly.

    I think the robot is part of master plan part 3. Tesla has hirering problems in low class jobs. So they use their employes with something like google glas or maybe even cameras in the factory and autopilot neural net to train the robots to replace factory workers. It would allow them to scale faster and drive down production cost over time.

    Gentlemen
    I just wanted to let you know about something that I experienced in the railroad industry. BNSF Railway and all the other class one railroads in the United States were forced to develop positive train control. This was after the horrible accident in Chatsworth California in 2008! BNSF Railway worked with WABTECH, a division of Westinghouse Air Brake company a Berkshire Hathaway owned company I believe. The task was to develop a system called PTC, positive train control. When first introduced it was problematic and error prone.But they had a good support system for it, good feedback loops just like Tesla! They improved the product! Continuously. All of the other railroads realized that WABTECH and BNSF were way ahead of anyone else. Everyone else just decided rather than try to develop the software on their own, to no avail to wait. They waited until BNSF and the WABTECH system was perfected. Then they all bought a license to use the software. Thats exactly what happened to the positive train control system. It’s getting better and better every day. I think the same things going to happen with Tesla full self driving! Railroaders and the communities the trains run through are 100 times safer! Thank You both gentlemen! I love your show Dave, your positive and always informative!
