There's an app called Flipp that has almost all of the store fliers for you to see in one place. You can touch the items you want to buy and it will circle the item for you AND make a list for you from each individual store. Also it has a watch list that you can enter products so you always know when they're on sale. I love it!

The tip about the frozen vegetables is spot on, and I have been using it for the last 13 months, because many times, the shipments of fresh vegetables don't always arrive on time when I am in the store for my once a week shopping trip. Thus, for many dishes, I head on over to the frozen food section.

You forgot the most important tips of all: don’t be nasty to the cashier if a price doesn’t come up right. They do not memorize prices. They simply scan the item and collect the payment. A little kindness goes a long way and in light of COVID many grocery stores are understaffed and overworked.
    PS. Put the cart back!

My issue is I never use all of the stuff before it goes bad, so a smaller bag is a benefit for me, lol! I try not to buy bags of anything now. Like right now, we have had a 5pb bag of potatoes for at least a month. If they're still good, we seriously need to do something with them. My roommate brother and I have settled on fried potatoes and eggs with steaks, lol.

@Skylarkist Expert It actually is the supplier not the store that does the packaging and often the shortage is from water loss during storage and shipping. Stores get in a pallet loaded with the pre-bagged produce items and just put them on the shelf. When packaged they were at or above the promised weight but evaporation happens over time.
Fresh produce normally has over 300% markup at the store.

The one I have committed to mind is the bread/in-store produce bag tie colors freshness schematic. Learn your colors and you will know that you're getting the freshest product on the shelf without having to hunt the package over with a magnifying glass to find the "best by" or expiration date. Just Google "bread tie colors" and you'll see lots of info. This is important so you're buying the product with the longest shelf life, not the store trying to push the oldest merchandise out the store at full price that will go bad at your house in 2-3 days instead of a week.

The items with (some of) the highest protit margins or mark-ups are the "impulse" purchase items on the racks at checkout. Resist the temptation!

    1. Luggage scale
    2. Stick to the perimeter of the store
    3. PLU codes. (4digit - traditional, 5digit - organic (start with 9))
    4. Skip ethnic section
    5. Buy best brands for paper brands
    6. Do not shop before meals (shop morning and evening for most fresh products)
    7. Do not fall for $1 for each item deals
    8. Use cashback apps
    9. Do not buy in bulk
    10. Pay attention to freezer sections (much better choices nowadays)
    Bonus. digital flyers, cereal

As a manager of a grocery store 1st point- those come in pre weighed we don’t really weigh them we get a big truck and just put them on the shelf. 2nd point- this is completely true. 3rd point- this happens with a mix up of not only the produce worker but customers and other workers doing go backs (stuff customers don’t want). 4th point- absolutely most of this stuff is overpriced and organic. 5th point- not the best quality for store product however the price can be cheaper but, it’s more often less quantity just looks the same and packaged to look the same. 6th point- that is true however most of the time it’s best to shop the latest night most stores due to covid most of the time now it’s right before closing when we restock. 7th point- yes absolutely depends on what it is but read the fine print if it says (must buy increments) then you have to buy the deal this mainly happens for soda, however you don’t need to for other items often. 8th point- not sure tbh. 9th point- not a bulk store for main stuff. 10th point- absolutely the frozen is cheaper and often better then cans from my experience. Bonus- we have an app or we have a paper in store. Bonus#2- yeah most of the time the quality is horrible and just a little cheaper. Finally my last tip- if you’re cool with the cashier sometimes not saying all the time you can get deals from them for instance if you’re cool and bag your own groceries or you’re nice and they have a coupon that’s like $10 off $90 they will give you the $10 off. Also if there’s a buy one get one deal go to the front and ask for half off if you only want one or you can say there isn’t another one as of now since covid rain checks aren’t being handed out by a lot of stores due to shortages so they will likely just give you it half off

If you live in Nevada or Utah, the Smith's grocery chain does a case lot sale about every 4 months, for 2 weeks at a time. You can get really great deals on common "stock up" items, i.e. Campbell's Chunky soup for $0.99 a can, Hamburger Helper for $0.99 a box, Rice a Roni for $.088 a box, etc... Great way to fill the pantry on things you use a lot. And the best part is that you don't need to buy an entire case of the item; you can just buy how many you want, and still get the same price.

Hey Matt (and others), I’m not sure if you already did a video on this, but, when in produce section, it’s been proven that there are certain types of lighting used on things that are listed with water that makes them appear fresher than if you went to a location where they’re not sprayed. Also, ALWAYS shake excess water off if you buy from there before checkout as it weighs less. There are also in many markets discounted deals for products in fresh section. Think about what you could use that day if something is appealing to you, and save yourself a ton. Or, because I have a ton of animals, many of their fresh items can be from same place for a huge discount.

I worked in the grocery industry for years. Be aware that ALL of the perimeter departments, (produce, meat, bakery, dairy) are ALL HIGH PROFIT CENTRS for the grocery store. Also NOT ALL END CAPS feature bargain priced items. They are there to catch your attention to the products displayed--oftentimes NOT at a sale price. Walmart is especially egress of doing this.

Matt, 2:26 Cannot speak about your stores, but in the stores in my hometown, the store employees do not restock the shelves. The producers restock their own products. At least for the packaged and canned items.

I worked in Produce and when potatoes, blueberries, or other items would have mold on them we would sort out the moldy produce and rebag the items. I personally make sure it's slightly over rather than right on just in case a consumer gets very angry. So sometimes it's the employees' underweighting produce items and not the company it came from.

We live in the north so fresh produce is extremely expensive or even hard to come by. We have a garden, but only about three months in which we can garden. We buy a ton of frozen vegetables and they are often better quality than the fresh produce that we can get.

Milk/dairy is always close to the back. Prepared foods, (rice a roni type boxed are in the center. These are higher profit and you have to walk thru this area to get milk/ meat/staple foods, etc. End displays are not necessarily products on ad or have a special price.

I always tell the stock person in the grocery aisle that I don't want the organic vegetables; could he point me to the inorganic vegetables? Inevitably they point the way. ;-D)

That sticker in the thumbnail gave me flashbacks!
I had to take my grandfather's car keys after his 3rd accident in 2 weeks. I became his chauffeur. He called EVERY morning to go shopping. I took him to 13 stores...EVERY DAY...so he could pick stickers off of produce. It drove me INSANE. He had 1000s of binders with baseball card holders FULL of these stickers 😆
I miss him driving me INSANE😊

Another issue with buy one get one offers is that the price of the individual item is often raised during the week of the sale or starting the week before. Sometimes, the item is routinely sold at an inflated price because the BOGO is offered on a regular basis. You may have some savings, but it is often not what you think.

Many people tend to think the frozen fruits and vegetables are inferior to the fresh produce. The truth is that the frozen produce is picked and flash frozen within hours where as the fresh produce may be picked on Monday and in the store on Tuesday and actually are less fresh than the frozen items. Plus frozen produce is picked at the peak of its ripeness where as fresh has to be picked before it's fully ripe thus making it more bland.

Regarding the oversized toilet paper rolls - Charmin was the beginning of this trend a while back when they introduced their Super/Mega/Extra sizes. When they first came on the market, they also provided what they called a toilet paper roll extender that allowed these oversized rolls to fit without issues. Charmin still will give you these extenders for free and you can request one for each bathroom in your home. Here is the link to the application for the free extender. www.charmin.com/en-us/about-charmin/faq/how-do-i-request-a-toilet-paper-roll-extender

You are just so fun to watch. I’m not kidding. You seem like the best guy to have as a friend or even to just know.
That said, I’d like to give a little insight into a “generic brand” called Our Family Foods Brand. Its only available mostly in the midwest, from New York to as far West as Wyoming/Colorado and as far South as Georgia so far.
So not available in every state yet.
I have found their products to be great quality, even the cereal, with very few exceptions.
I’m not kidding when I say my family actually prefers some Our Family products over some name brands, such as Mac and Cheese, hot dogs, breakfast sausages, lunch meat, cheeses, taco sauce and taco meat seasoning, chili seasoning, canned tomatoes/juice, canned condensed soups, tuna, beef stew, and boxed pasta dinners you add ground beef to, and peanut butter and jelly, and their bagged frozen fruits and veggies are always nice, as is their ice cream and other frozen novelties.
Most of their cereal is good quality too, but not all of them I will admit. Their coffee is fantastic-and they have compostable k-cup brewer style pods now.
The dairy items are sourced from your local area, so you’re more than likely buying the same milk or cheese from the same dairy farms that has the name brand on them in your local store, you just don’t pay a few dollars more for the fancy packaging.
So I guess what I’m trying to say is Our Family Brand is worth checking out even if you don’t necessarily need to save a few dollars, because you may find you like their product better than a name brand.
Anyway, man, I sincerely thank you for your videos, and your information, I have found a lot of good info and advice I have actually used, like when you do videos on Dollar Tree, and you just keep coming back with more!
I appreciate you, I hope to see and learn a lot more from you. I wish you all the best.
If anyone is interested if Our Family Foods products are sold in your state and at what stores (not all grocery stores carry them), here is their website.

I've worked in grocery all my life. Produce to be specific. Your theory on potatoes isnt true with other items. With bagged citrus for example, most times they weigh more than they are suppose to. They more often than not, over compensate.

re: comment #4 shopping for ethnic foods. Agreed, cost and quality will be better at those specialized stores. But some of us also try to consolidate our grocery shopping as much as possible. To go to 3-4 different stores every week for groceries and sundries is not possible or desirable for most schedules. Sadly, I have to pay a bit more for that convenience.

Some of those bags are overweight too. It's not that anybody is trying to rip you off. I worked in produce factories and trust me....they are not trying to put in less product. It's a super fast paced environment..so you get some a few ounces over, and sometimes a few ounces under.
