Great Video! Dragon Age is by far my favorite fantasy world and lore. The Qunari are the most unique race and culture in dragon age. It's explained in the lore that some Qunari are born without horns, but it's very rare. Sten is one of these rare few. However, The real reason is that the devs didn't want to make unique helmet models for Sten's horns.
They Qunari came with black powder and strong stone, With massive metal warships and brutally powerful magi. Yet many of those advantages are not likely to last long. Already the secret of the powder has gotten loose. Theodosian Magi are advancing in their power now unchecked by the circles. The realms themsleves are building stronger and more advanced. While it is said they left Theodas for the sake of conversion such a massive series of campaigns must have weighed heavily on them. Theres no telling how long they can keep up these Qunari Wars. Assuming the realms of Thedas dont implode for one reason or another.......
@@blazer168 Multiple instances in DA2 about it getting out pop up which points to it being a serious security issue as technology like gunpowder cannot be kept safely guarded after the Qunari have been using it for centuries since the Steel age.

Good to see more Dragon Age content. Origins was the first game I played that felt like a living breathing world with "realistic" history. Incidentally, I would kill or die to get a series on the history of the continent of Jugdral in Fire Emblem. Genealogy of the Holy War has a strikingly mature and well-developed world, especially considering it is a Super Nintendo game. Fodlan, Elibe, and Tellius would also make for fascinating series, but Jugdral is sorely underappreciated given that neither game has received a release in the West.
I am really looking forward to the video on "The Hero of Fereldan". I always went with Aeducan dwarf warrior, the start story was the best one in my opinion. The Human lord story was the better pick for the cinematics and big decision making parts of the game. Also, I forget the name, but the werewolf-queen character or whatever would be a good extra lore video too. I always found that side quest very interesting, and having werewolves in the final fight scenes was cool af. Thanks for these videos!
@@mm-kk6nt Just looked into it real quick, in DA:2 default world settings, the HoF is indeed a Dalish Female. However, considering it is a "choice-based RPG series", there is no single "definitive canon". Copy pasta from a thread. That's why I loved this series so much, they let us decide the outcome of their story/world (to an extent).
"Slaughtered en masse and then dumped into mass graves". Yeah that sounds Andrastian alright. The Qun way of life sounds stifling, but I suppose for some peoples like the Elves, it was better than the alternative.
Truth be told the Qunari and the Qun is probably one of the top fictional races/species. The look, the culture, the hivemind religion. Can't wait to see where their story goes in the lore.
Somehow the Qun manages to be both more repressive towards its mages than the Chantry, and also more accepting of diverse gender and other social identities.
The contemporary Theodosian historian make it sounded like the Qunari didn't any have problem continuing the war if they want to... But I think I kinda beg to differ... It true that at the moment the Qunari do has an upper hand in their better organized body of society that suited for waging wars since they brainwashed their people to stick with a certain roll and force them to produce the result. Meaning, A stable muster of men arms and supplies (as long as they have the resources to make them). But... It's just a matter of time before that advantage wouldn't be enough to keep them in the lead... Innovation is one of the big keys for turning the tide of a long war. A society which force people into role is more likely to have less innovator than the one that lets it's people freely pursue their interests... First of all... Right now, Qunari advantage over the human weaponry is their Gaatlok gunpowder since they're the only one who knew how to make it. But with the fight continue going on... How long will they manage to keep that a secret? When the moment come where the human learn the secret or invent the alternative and implement it, Will the Qunari be able to withstand the same kind of firepower hurling back at them or have any way to counter that? Second... Even though powerful, The Saarebas are essentially hedge mages since they did not receive a proper instruction and training. They basically a walking Adaar, A living canon which their Arvaarad is the gunner. Compare to their opposition, The more versatile Human or Elven mages in the Circle or the Imperium seem to have more edge and overall uses over them. Not to mention... Since the Tevinter keep pursuing the power through magic and selectively breeding themselves to have better mages, That edge seem to get more and more dangerous to the Qunari. With the Saarebas must always be kept under watch, never allowed to be alone, and must be slain or commit suicide if separate from their keeper... I don't think the Qun is fond of the idea of doing the same as the Imperium by having their Tamassrans try breeding Saarebas to produce the stronger one. Third... Here we seem to only heard about the talk of people on human side switched to the Qun's but then... what about the reverse? Just like the human downtrodden who convert to the Qun to seek a better life to live, There are also those in the Qun who left it after witnessing the freedom that the human had and become Tal-Vashoth which some even ended up having children... The Vashoth, A new generation of ashen skin who grew up outside of the Qun. Meaning... They also suffer the same drawback of their people broke away just like the human. If this keep going on with more and more Vashoth emerging then that will create more incentive for those dissatisfied under the Qun to leave which could shake up the strict and stable core of their society. So, The question is... how will this end (if there's no other catastrophe come in between)? I think it's either going to be the scenario where either the Qunari launch their serious invasion and finally successfully conquered Thedas or the Human stalling them long enough to the point where they come up with way(s) to counter attack the Qun whether to drive them to their extinction or to the point that they're no longer a threat (kinda like the Elf... minus Solas).
Its looking like The Qunari are faltering in their quest. Their invasion into Northern Thedas fell apart in the end and they no longer have the element of surprise. They've never had a magical edge which Thedas is increasingly beating them and if gunpowder which has been increasingly popping up outside of the Qun's control is any indication they're going to loose the technological edge since Thedas is still innovating on their own. That's not even counting if the totality of the Qun can truly handle the totality of Thedas.
"Innovation is one of the big keys for turning the tide of a long war" this is where I stopped reading. Qunari have shown to be more innovative than literally any other race. The entire Qun structure encourage that. The Qun mentality prevents a degree of freedom yes, but you looked at it too narrowly. The Qun is not just one industry. It's many. The Qun puts people in roles they are most talented and proficient in. You are encouraged to produce great results and that requires the freedom for innovation. This is why Qunari is the most technologically advanced race we know of in the current timeline. Literally in Trespasser they are shown to have invented gunpowder and they have invented cannons. Not even the Dwarves have invented these things. You can't invent things like this without innovation. To reiterate. The Qun don't limit your freedom in the area you are put in. They limit your freedom to prevent you from diverging from your area.
@@ReachStudioProexactly right. The qunari have more reason to have innovation as well. They barely allow mages to live let alone experiment in their field. This means their practical technologies aren't held back by a reliance on magic. Qunari are also likely on the verge of an industrial revolution while the rest of thedas has stagnated into feudal kingdoms and city states.
@@ReachStudioPro I came back to rewatch this video and just saw the reply. I will counter your point with our world's history... The imperial China. China is very first civilization who known for their use of gunpowder and mechanical devices, They use them to developed weapon and technology that far more advance than any of their neighbors which gave them the edge in the battle for their supremacy of the land. But then things begin to change started with Qin Shi Huang who unified the seven warring states into one Qin Empire. Under his rule, Any significant research and development must be approve and oversaw by his government in order to ensure that no new weapon or technology would fall to any that could threaten his reign. Because of that, The advancement start slowing down and later on fall in to a stagnation. Sure, The advancement and development still going on... But with only the approved and qualify people allowing to try advancing what they have or come up with something new, It lessen the potential innovation within the empire under the imperial rule. On the other hand... In the western world which they start off picking up the pace around the late Medieval to the Renaissance where knowledge were less (able) to be kept by the ruling class and spreading among the people, Many new innovations start sprouting out more and more through out the societies which propelled many of those countries that were only there for about hundred of years or so to advance beyond the millennium empire like China which later on led them to be the one who triumphed over the old stagnated empire. So, Just like the Imperial China... Yes, The Qun is more advance than other neighboring Nations. And yes, They're still keep on advancing... But with other Nations no longer stay still and even try to imitate their advancement to the point of coming up with something new to try to overtake them, How long will they be able to keep a head? Especially with all these chain of events along with birth of new heroes who bring the new change to those Nations, How long will the Qun which only allow just the people who they seen as qualify and approve to have the hands in the advancement keep staying a head? Even with the "Way of the Qun" which similar to Communism where they put everyone to their place so could work for the so called "greater good". That wouldn't give them much edge over the others for long since We also seen how that work out in our very own history where all the countries under those kind of rule ended up. So like I said... Unless they're able to use the advancement which they have over the other Nations right now to successfully conquer Thedas in the near future, They would come to find their opponents grow harder and harder to fight as the time went on. Their so called "way of the Qun" would hinder their new advancement compare to the other nations which more and more starting to open up more to one another through the change that were brought by the seires' Heroes to the point that the Qun will no longer be the one who stay a head and start to fall behind. Eventually they would come to the point where they'll get overtake either by other Nations which advance beyond they could... Or by the new generation of their very own people that see that they need to change and begin the revolution.
I'm sure even under the Qun there is SOME individuality, i.e. Iron Bull; also Cole says in one of moments that some baker under the Qun puts sugar in their bread as a little act of defiance or something. Then again we've basically only seen the Qun military and not their civilian society so who knows.
@@blazer168iron bull is more of a facade to better infiltrate for the sake of the qun (as explained by bull himself) but it was only when he started the chargers that he became more of an "individual" than just a facadr
@@khalduras784 Fixing this cause i remembered some things wrong. He clearly states in one of his interactions that he was always more independent, which is why they made him a spy. I doubt the Qun tells all their spies to let others know that you're a spy. Hell, even some of his own Chargers know he's a spy. If you help him to decide to break away from the Qun he more or less acts the same.
The Qun philosophy doesn't seem socially or psychologically viable in the long run. No individuality, no social mobility, no love or family just the role you've been given for life, and you will be satisfied with it.
It's a small thing, but the term "nuclear family" is inaccurate in this instance. The nuclear family was a product of the second industrial revolution. It replaced the traditional clan-based family structure where multiple generations of a family lived together, with cousins and uncles and aunts being ubiquitous in people's lives. The nuclear family was a product of the increased mobility made possible by railroads and steamships, as well as the increase in available housing. The nuclear family concept only became possible when it was possible for a group that small to have a private room without being rich. The world described here would have clan and tribal family structures, not nuclear ones, for this new philosophy to disrupt.
The "nuclear family" is recent term from as early as the 1920s and popularised in 1950s. However as the basic family structure of a father, mother and multiple children has existed in some form throughout Human history. In the 17th century, the church influenced and encouraged this family structure in Western Europe and New England. Round this time it became a financially viable social unit before the Industrial revolution.
@@richardthomas9497 except what separates the idea of the nuclear family from the traditional family is the idea that it can be broken off from the larger family structure. Until the two Industrial Revolutions, this was exceedingly rare, and often implied being a refugee. Family structure, and family authority, was almost universally larger than one couple and their children. When the Bible talked about a disobedient son, there was no cut off at adulthood. A son was expected to obey his father until the father died. That meant that if you were 70, and your father was 90 and still alive, you had to defer to his judgement and take his orders. That was the main cord which the nuclear family cut, it made every man a patriarch of his own much smaller family. It's also why, unlike the traditional family which had lasted for ten thousand years, the nuclear family started to explode almost as soon as it developed. If men were now entitled to all these rights and privileges, without the corresponding duties and obediences, then why shouldn't women be? Why, in fact, shouldn't children have certain rights guaranteed? By giving every man the powers previously reserved to the heads of large clan structures and taking away their obligation to obey and serve while they earned that position through seniority, the nuclear family undermined the implicit social contract that had held families together since the birth of agriculture. This moved us inevitably onto the course towards modern, easily dismantlable families that we have today.
One can't but wonder the effect Qunari philosophy would have had in Thedas, if they had evolved towards more of a mercantile society, rather than still being a feudal one by the point of their invasion. After all, the chance of upwards social mobility and greater personal success can be very alluring to those of lower status that are leaving the feudal mindset behind, regardless of its achievability, in comparison to those based on social conformity. Would have had the Qun such great success against that kind of societal mindset?
Reduced success among humans perhaps, but would still have significant sway among the elves, who being actively discriminated against would not have much mobility regardless of the society structure
Thedas society being in the full blown early modern period rather then the renaissance era its mostly in atm around the time of the Qunari Invasion would be something very different. For one the army and navy sizes would be enormous. Most Medieval armies were in the tens of thousands range. The biggest Orlais and Tevinter would probably be able to have the higher end for their royal armies and legions. along with decent fleets from the merchant classes. By comparison in the early modern period large standing navies became a norm for proper states which immideitly takes away an important advantage the Qun navy had in a standing force of iron clad dreadnought vessels which would let Theodosian forces contest them on the seas and disrupt their supply lines. Armies from smaller places like the free marches would be a huge problem for the Qun let alone the vastly expanded Orlais army and Tevinter legions. Economically they will also be able contest the Qunari far better. Stronger and more advanced economies could leverage war for longer against the Qunari. Far less issue with campaigning seasons and needing to haphazardly levy taxes. Meanwhile the Qun is already a command economy meaning they would not be able to have much advantage as the OTL Qunari War. Another, understated, factor is governance. More efficient early modern states could combat Qunari Philosophical subterfuge through spy networks. And better quality of life through infrastructure and education. Cutting off vital local support the Qunari won over. There will still be converts but not nearly as easily as before. The biggest change up will be Magi. The Qunari will only have access to their brute force magic. By comparrison Theodosian Society will likely have many more far better educated magi who in turn will have access to the support of a more advanced Theodosian society to utilize better magic. Instead rendering the Qunari behind in this regard. All in all. The Wars would be far more severe. The Qunari regrouping on Par Valen will be less done out of concern for the lost souls and more due to the fact they are actually losing on several fronts.
No wonder the Chantry is so scared of the Qunari. Unlike the Dwarves and Elves, the Qunari cannot be bossed around or ignored. They are a powerful nation with advanced technology. They could decimate all of southern Thedas if they wanted. The only thing that prevents them from doing it, is their own ideology.
It's crazy how some English speakers can't pronounce the letter "Q". It's not even my first damn language and I will never fail with its pronunciation.
What irony, the Qunari retreated from mainland Thedas to end the suffering of the innocent between the two sides, only for all those who had converted to the Qun and stayed loyal to it got slaughtered for it. I'm sure when the Qunari launch their next crusade they won't make the same mistake again.
They retreated because they knew that they were gonna kill far more innocents. Still is fool that they didn’t carried with them the converts knowing what would happen.
What happens to Qun converts when you take there decision makers away, none of them are allowed to fill in gaps they have too keep following their role.
As someone with High Functioning Autism. The Qun actually sounds kinda nice, lol Get given a job, told to do it, and just go about it. Don't gotta worry about all this complicated stuff of life. Just do the one job you have. Assuming you're suited to it, sounds pretty nice and simple, lol
I have both that and ADHD and the Qun sound great and terrible at the same time. I’ll get bored of my role and the lack of freedom to choose and social mobility will be neutering and stressful for my brain which will eventually want to change life paths at some point. The egalitarian nature of the qun does appeal to me. I take it that there’s no poverty or homelessness amongst the Qun for example
I've loved Dragon Age greatly, but the Qunari have always been mysterious to me. I get what the Qun is all about, but attacking a person's freedom is the same as killing them. You destroy what makes them human.
@Tifa600 thats nonsense, mages went to blood magic be4 the circle, is just greed, thats in fact why the circle was created. And better not to speak of how qunari treats the wizards.

I was so into this when DA 1 and 2 came out. Then I sort of "fell off", never played Inquisition, and now Inq. is almost 10 years old xD Still think the lore and world is facinating though. To be honest I heavy dislike totalitarism of The Qunari. Some aspects of Faith and this whole Mage-Templar-System has big flaws and the racism of some of the human societies in Dragon Age are certainly not appealing (although plusible given the human nature). The Tevinter Empire was deeply flawd but (from the viewpoint as a game-element or topic for an adventure) has at least some grandeur and style (and is an interesting opponent). Both I do not find so nerving (and boring) like the Qunari 'faith'. I mean, I liked Sten (to e certain extent) and the Iron Bull of 'Inquisition' was O. K. - but all the time during Dragon Age II, when the Arishok waxed his pseudo-philosophical sermon...🤢
the tamassrans are clearly the philosopher kings telling the rest what to do in life, but the egalitarian aspect of their society (and the recognition their workers have in their social structure) may be thanks to some sort of materialist analysis and a correct distribution of resources

I think if you would continue pushing him and forcing him to do something he will eventually got bored and stop making content to this channel.
It's a shame Bioware went with the least interesting storyline presented in Origins for the sequel. A Qunari invasion of Thedas would have been far more interesting than the Mage-Templar conflict. Even Sten hinted that the Qunari would eventually be back. The Mage-Templar should have remained a secondary storyline and the main storyline should have been the Qunari invasion, the threat of Corypheus(actually utilize him in an interesting way and not the way he was presented in Inqusion) and have Solas and the Evanuris be a looming threat for future sequels.
The creators of Dragon Age did too good a job of making Thedas like the real world with all the religious politics, playing the games I kind of wished at some point to just kill everyone and join the darkspawn.
Loved being able to play as Qunari in DA Inquisition! Their culture is so fascinating. Hopefully, the new Dragon Age game gives lots more material to flush out the world, both past and present.
In the first game the Qunari society was detailed out by the Sten who was a party member. He made it clear that male and female Qunari served very distinct and clear roles in their society. Then Inquisition gets released and the developers retconned all of that out of nowhere with Iron Bull detailing their society completely different. Sten said only males were ever warriors while females served as teachers and motherly figures to children. Iron Bull states that some females are allowed to be warriors for whatever reason he gave. And then the final DLC for Inquisition is released with a female Qunari leading the hostile forces. And I'm going to be straight up with you on where I stand. I will damn sure respect a woman who can put her fists up and beat a man down if he gives her trouble. But I have no respect for people who can't stick with the story they establish just because it will hurt the feelings of someone else.

the qun philosofy is defenitely an interesting one. Mostly in how efficient it runs by eliminating individualism. We cannot judge wether it is right or not, as all qun speak about it with bias and we have not seen its effects on its own society and people's mental state much via our own eyes. Still clearly it works well enough.
It's a stagnant culture and will fail on a large scale. It's the same as Communism. It sounds great on paper, but doesn't work outside of small groups of people.
It's horrifying, it's a totalitarian state that controls every aspect of your life from birth to death. It makes me wonder of the events and circumstances that led to this philosophy in the first place. Also how depressed the lower classes of Thedas must have been to prefer this than being under the Magisterium.
Of course it works because the writers say it works... Bring that to real life and watch it all crumble because without individualism, there's no innovation or motivation, no drive, only do the barest minimum expected, no hopes and dreams, no improvisation, no life preservation... This ideology can not create such a civilization... What happens to the soldiers during peace??? Why would I try to get good at what I'm doing??? Lack of individualism is the death of the mind...

Really enjoying this series. It's actually gotten me back into playing Inquisition for the first time in years.
I don't recall the secret of Gaatlok getting out, when was this?
@@blazer168 Multiple instances in DA2 about it getting out pop up which points to it being a serious security issue as technology like gunpowder cannot be kept safely guarded after the Qunari have been using it for centuries since the Steel age.

Combine it with various events in the series pointing to a time of major change in Thedas in many ways. Gunpowder is just one of many which will turn the world upside down.
@@theliato3809it was originally the dwarf from amaranthine that figured it out though he had to mix a bunch of random shit to emulate the black powder (which thus far seems alot more inneficient compared to what the qunari has)
Good to see more Dragon Age content.
I believe the official HOF is a Dalish female warden
@@mm-kk6nt Just looked into it real quick, in DA:2 default world settings, the HoF is indeed a Dalish Female. However, considering it is a "choice-based RPG series", there is no single "definitive canon". Copy pasta from a thread.
That's why I loved this series so much, they let us decide the outcome of their story/world (to an extent).
"Slaughtered en masse and then dumped into mass graves". Yeah that sounds Andrastian alright. The Qun way of life sounds stifling, but I suppose for some peoples like the Elves, it was better than the alternative.
Just slaves changing masters
I’d love to see the Dominion wars and Cardassian/Bajoran conflicts from Deep Space 9.
Chef's kiss analysis...
Its great you guys are explorign this. Mass Effect also has some good Encyclopedia to pull from.

I'm sure even under the Qun there is SOME individuality, i.e. Iron Bull; also Cole says in one of moments that some baker under the Qun puts sugar in their bread as a little act of defiance or something.

Fixing this cause i remembered some things wrong.
The qunari are by far the most interesting race in the DA setting

@@ryanwilliams8723 I can see it having an effect on Casteless Dwarves as well.
Thousands of elves joined

Worse now you got the veilguard 😂
The creators of Dragon Age did too good a job of making Thedas like the real world with all the religious politics, playing the games I kind of wished at some point to just kill everyone and join the darkspawn.
Now this is more like it up until this point it was so God dame generic but now this universe seems intresting!!!!!!.
Loved being able to play as Qunari in DA Inquisition! Their culture is so fascinating. Hopefully, the new Dragon Age game gives lots more material to flush out the world, both past and present.
The Qun is just the Communist Manifesto for Dragon Age.
The final DLC of Inquisition ruined the Qunari all because people were offended by them. That shows how weak BioWare is.
What happened?
In the first game the Qunari society was detailed out by the Sten who was a party member. He made it clear that male and female Qunari served very distinct and clear roles in their society. Then Inquisition gets released and the developers retconned all of that out of nowhere with Iron Bull detailing their society completely different. Sten said only males were ever warriors while females served as teachers and motherly figures to children. Iron Bull states that some females are allowed to be warriors for whatever reason he gave. And then the final DLC for Inquisition is released with a female Qunari leading the hostile forces.

Mostly in how efficient it runs by eliminating individualism. We cannot judge wether it is right or not, as all qun speak about it with bias and we have not seen its effects on its own society and people's mental state much via our own eyes. Still clearly it works well enough.
We can and it's garbage
It's a stagnant culture and will fail on a large scale. It's the same as Communism. It sounds great on paper, but doesn't work outside of small groups of people.
It's horrifying, it's a totalitarian state that controls every aspect of your life from birth to death.
It makes me wonder of the events and circumstances that led to this philosophy in the first place. Also how depressed the lower classes of Thedas must have been to prefer this than being under the Magisterium.
Sinid culture is colectivist and they have lost as any other.
And better not speak how about communism keeps falling.
