  • TRU-LINE-8- Round column mill drill (RF30 and Clones) stabilising kit designed, made and sold by Bruce Whitham demonstration. The TRU-LINE-8 is designed to take away the wobble of the head when tramming the head in the x axis, allowing the operator to reposition the head height and have repeatablility of the previous position. This video shows the problem, and the solution, with added ability to have a DRO for the X axis.

You guys sure do things the hard way.
I also have an RF30, and yes, the head moves sideways when I crank it up or down.
So I epoxied a cheap laser pointer to a Mighty Mag, and stuck it on the side of the head.
The laser pointer projects a .180 diameter dot on a vertical line I painted on the shop wall.
The wall is 24 feet from the laser pointer, and the line is .180 wide.
After I have raised or lowered the head, I turn the laser pointer on and rotate the head until the laser's dot is centered on the vertical line.
I don't think you can get more accurate than that.

Great idea. I will be using a laser bore sighter with a tube glued to the machine. Thanks.

Maybe my math is wrong. I’m calculating for .001 movement at the spindle center, the laser will move .016” on a surface 24 feet away. It’s a big help compared to eye-balling 1 thou, but still tough to dial in, especially by yourself?

To answer Blind dog's comment below: We are aware of the value of the laser pointer trick as you describe it and it is perfect for if you rotate the head and want it to be reset back in the zero position (if you want to call it that). However the Tru-Line-8 comes to do just that and provided repeatability in the vertical plane at any compass point that you may rotate the head and require adjusting height at that same radial point off the zero during working at an off zero position. Moreover the laser pointer trick is only valuable if the Mill drill stays in a static position. Some mill drills like mine are on a stand that gets moved around, The Tru-Line-8 is not effected by that.

Very slick, Thanks , I had not seen that upgrade, I bought my used RF30 in 1994 and still use it .Later from Texas

. Easy way to stabilize the head is to line the head to center then drill a hole through the rack and into the column at the top and at the bottom of the rack with a N 7 drill, then thread the hole in the column with a 1/4 20 then drill the rack to take a cap head Allen stud to be flush. You must tram the bed on these Mill Drills as they are way out.

Thanks the great video Bruce I am picking up and Enco 30 (Rong Fu RF30) next week I would love to install the Tru-Line 8 as an upgrade. What is the price of the Tru-Line 8 and what is the turn around time to ship.......TIA Bob

Please get all of the hardware installed and mount a dial indicator on there. Then shoot a new video showing exactly how dialed you can get yours please
. .. I see a lot of movement while your cranking on it.
I really would like to see the finished numbers .. I could use this kit if you can show me legitimately that it holds 0 to .003

Nice idea Bruce, but you need to give us a range of costs for both versions with and without the DRO options. we can only determine the value to us if we know the cost, payment methods and shipping costs to USA.

Nice work Bruce. I really like how your design allows the head to rotate while eliminating play. I have the gear head version of that Mill and I have been thinking of doing something similar for quite some time. Will you be working with anyone in the USA to make these? I imagine the cost of shipping from Australia would be quite high.
On an unrelated note I just want to say I really enjoy your videos. I wish you posted more frequently but I understand that the work comes first. Cheers!

Abe thanks for the comments. I got this Idea from my gear headed mill and have shown videos of that. The Geared head unit (Type B) requires two clamps and a different block that fits to the head. send me an email and I'll send you some pictures. At present I'm shipping from Perth, the general cost to the US is $95 for the Type A kit. I am looking at making some in USA. Thanks for being a follower, Gut Shabbas.

    Two problems-
-For my machine (and many others) the top block prevents access to the column tightening bolts, which are at the rear.
-Why would someone with a milling machine buy milled parts to modify their mill?

Hi Bruce. I am looking at either one of these Rong Fu machines or a Bridgeport for my shed. I like the older machines but the cost on the bridgeport is a little prohibitive for what I need. As an experienced machinist how capable/suitable do you think these machine are in the hands of a novice with a fair bit of inginuity. Also what would the cost of the kit be shipped to Melbourne?

    • @BruceWhitham
      @BruceWhitham  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Glenn, thanks for the query, the type of machine needs to suit the purpose, if for home hobby and small work the RF and clones can be found in a few million places and working satisfactory, the Bridgeport styles are for more serious work and have a much larger footprint, whilst less restricted to the types of tooling it can handle. Really comes down to horses for courses on the one hand and available money on the other. There are many forums showing how people have done some great work on the Rong Fu styles and they are not expensive maybe you should start there, upgrading will be easy in the future if needed. Old Bridgeport's are not cost effective in Australia, most are flogged out and parts are expensive, no one left that do machine refurbishments like once compared to the states

I think it's a fine idea but even with the mods that have been done to my HF version of this mill the cost would be nearly what the whole thing is worth as it sits +-$400 or so. I'd be lucky to actually sell if for that in a reasonable time frame. So.... Just can't justify the cost.
I get things set up and try my best not to need to move the head and that works so far- for much of what I need to do. I think long term I'd rather put that $400 plus whatever I might sell my rig for and buy a different milling machine. I picked mine up from a friend who did most the mods, Variable speed DC motor, auto feed on the Y and few other minor things on it for about $200 bucks some 10+ years ago. so i guess I got my moneys worth.
