    I had a similar setup, for about a year, until I could bury the power cable. It was mostly for the lights in the work shed, and outlets for a radio. I wish the guys complaining about the electrical code violations would specify them so other viewers who don’t know them, could learn. I think it’s good to use 20-Amp wire in case you want to bury the power and put it on a dedicated 20-amp circuit in the future.

    • @makinlifework9345
      @makinlifework9345  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Lights and the mitre saw is all we run off this and it’s held up beautifully over the last eight months. This is also temporary until I can afford to put in solar. This shed does not require permits in my location due to its size and not being used as a habitable space. Some of the claims made in the comments don’t even represent what was done in this video so at this point it’s a pile on effect.

      Those arent suppose to be even used with an extention cord. That being said, i think they do sell a "ac extention cord" its thick guage wire. It'd be real costly to find whatever guage that is for a long length.
      If u did, everything else would work. U'd just have to make sure the house plug ur using, doesnt have a lot of others plugged into that circuit.
      I'd also highly recommend a gfci plug in the shed instead

      Lights are pretty minimal on power drain especially if you go with led types. Another alternative you might consider if possible (though a bit less reliable) is a solar powered light. I picked one up off amazon for like $13-15 where the battery, light and solar panel are all one unit. Sold as a flood/security light, it's motion activated but came with a small remote. Granted it's not the brightest but I have it mounted up about 10ft off the ground and lights up my grill area (6x7ft pad), the porch nearby, out into the yard and lights it up well enough to grill by. May solve one of your issues and not even require power. The motion activated one I got has an option with the remote to turn the light on/off and keep it on steady as well as brightness adjustment.

    can you run multiple devices at the same time as running light all off the same power source? I would think it would trip the breaker back in the house?? How does this not over load the system? is it the gauge of wire being used?? Would love to do the same with mine, but fear the tripping constantly back in the home....

    • @makinlifework9345
      @makinlifework9345  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I run a light and a mitre saw off this with no issues of breaker being tripped. Depends on what you plan on running. If you exceed the outlets amperage capacity you will trip the breaker just like any other outlet in your house.

    • @mattk6827
      @mattk6827 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's fine to use over rated wire, the power is (or should be) limited by the weakest link and the breaker to match. Ie a 15a plug with 15a breaker/fuse at the circuit (preferably dedicated) powering the 20a cord is fine. Power's drawn not pushed and isn't restricted by the lines but by the breaker. A 20-25a breaker with 20a cord with 15a receptacle could be problematic as it wouldn't shut down when the weakest link is overloaded.

    Your wire splice is not a legal splice with just tape around wires like that. You should have run that pigtail into a junction box and at least wire nut each wire separately and then tape up each individual wire. Also, not the most efficient way to run wiring on the surface of the header plate. You will have to re-route the wiring if you ever decide to cover the studs, etc. Otherwise.......You did accomplish what you set out to do.

    Dear LOOOORD! I dont normally jump into the comments to rag people, but holllly cow is this bad. #1...15 amp extension cord? Is that a 20 amp circuit from the house? If so you are definitely making the extension cord the fusible link there. If you power 18 to 19 amps...that cord is going to melt down. Not to mention the lack of weather tightness. #2 That wiring is just run like someone who NEVER plans on insulation nor closing those walls. I can even imagine running raw wire like that in an area where Im going to be slinging wood, or nails, or hammers, etc... there is a reason that almost every code in the world requires wire to be kept safe from impact either in the wall or in a conduit, etc... #3 if you were going to do it this way, why not run a 30 or 50 amp input socket and a sub panel so you could run it off a 30 or 50 amp cord from a generator OR from a 30 or 50 amp circuit from the house? At least they have a twist lock to them and can be found with housings that are weather tight.
    This isnt clever nor safe, nor even all that easy, honestly. Its almost easier to do it properly. I hope you rectify some of this and take electricity seriously, bc this is just asking for trouble. Even the way you have a small saw right there by the plug/switch combo is a bad idea...
