- You know how it is. Things get in the way. It took me 38 years to return to Bergamo, and I brought along my 1986 travel diary of the day to retrace my steps.

I sold classical music CDs for years. My best customer was in Bergamo. She must have bought hundreds of titles from me. I will always remember her and Bergamo, which I have finally "been" to!

Hey. I dont know if you or anyone will ever read this but seeing this video really made me tear up a little bit.
For the last 10-15 Years I struggled with heavy depression. I mean now its better thanks to many hours of therapy and hard work, No more suicidal thoughts etc.
But years ago it was really bad and I had 2 friends that helped me open up which ultimately kind of saved my life.
One of them used to live in Bergamo and also had a troubled past. We supported each other and that resulted in me going to Bergamo multiple times. Travelling alone facing my agoraphobia and social anxiety.
That airport, the station building where I always got off the bus and met her, the walk from stazione to the funicolar (I always used to stay in a small Apartment in the upper funicolar station actually). Seeing you walking the same very streets I used to roam around. Where I sat down in the lunch breaks of my friend (she was studying in the bergamo university) right infront of the white building at the old town square. During covid (which bergamo was the first european city that had been hit really badly if you remember) sadly most of my friends family passed away and she moved to portugal to create a better life for her kids (we met there again because at that time I lived in Lisbon) which means that since a few months before covid, I have not been to bergamo anymore and I dont really find time/reason for it... but this brought back so many memories.
Right now times are not easy for me. Not as bad as they used to be but also not as good as they have been a few months ago.
I kind of lost touch to both of this friends, work is great but work sometimes is exhausting and doesnt pay back anything but money.. and money doesnt mean much when you are not healthy.. But there will be better times again!
But im not here to complain. Anyone who is still reading shouldnt have to read all this. I guess what I want to say is:
Thanks for bringing back memories. Bergamo (and Treviglio, you should visit if you ever have the chance, such a nice place!) helped me in very bad times and it will always have a special place in my heart! It means so much this video and I hope you know what Impact you have with such videos. Yes we dont know and we will probably never meet, but you made my day/week a lot better and I thank you so much for it, words cant describe!

Back in 1954 or 1955 my grandfather worked at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington. He was always very open, so when Nino Rimoldi came over from Bergamo on a visit he befriended him. In 1956 Nino and his wife Lisetta invited my grandparents to visit them and their family in Bergamo. That was a year before I was born, so Bergamo has been part of my entire life. They brought back a little plaque of an Italian house which hangs in my kitchen to this day and, of course, Nino and Lisetta have never been forgotten.
Great story - and the NPL is still there (my son plays cricket next door)
Asked my now wife to marry me on the shores of Lake Como and then had a wonderful evening in Bergamo. Happy memories!

I was in Bergamo three weeks ago passed all the landmarks that you did. Such a beautiful old town, I could have spent longer than 2 days exploring. I can always go back!

Bergamo reminded me a little bit of Florence (Firenze). A very beautiful city. Amazing to return after 38 years and it's hardly changed.

Thirty-eight years is a long time, it's amazing how things change and yet they don't. Recollections and memories are funny things, aren't they?

A few months ago I went back and looked at my travel journal from a trip to Europe at 17. I thought about recreating it, but realized the pace would kill me now, nearly 50 years later! I'm glad you went back sooner than I did to a place you remembered liking a lot.
I done something similar with Innsbruck (26 year gap), now I go back there every 2 years. Recommend Innsbruck old town and double it up with a trip to the top of Nordkette, would make a great film for you. Enjoy all your fil.s Scott 😀
Hi Scott, fascinating city. If you like funicular railways there is a brilliant one in Wellington New Zealand. As it rises throught the tunnels they light up with different colours of fairy lights. Very beautiful. You need to go back to Bergamo again sometime but maybe for a longer stay. Thanks for posting and stay safe🙃🙂❤❤

What a stunning city Scott. You should try an overnighter there someday as I would imagine it is even more beautiful lit up at night.

Ahhh Bergamo, indeed a bit of a hidden gem. It's a shame all those Ryanair passengers at BGY make a beeline for the buses to Milan (IMHO quite a boring city unless you're in the modeling industry) and completely miss this wonderful town. Then again maybe it's just fine - this way we who know better can have it all to ourselves!

Know the feeling I rode my bike to Bergamo on the way to Rome and Naples 50 years ago, and not surprisingly I don't remember anything about the town.

I visited Bergamo a few years ago, like you we went to the old town but didn’t find the beautiful buildings that you did.
Scott, you presented that wonderfully ,nostalgia is such strange feeling, even giving false memories and mixing up places and events ..you summon this episode up well... .. i think perhaps the moral,my personal view,leave the past in the past, cherish the memories of that day, going back leads to sadness (both good and bad memories),and trying to make comparisons , particularly after a long absence , rather daunting .Just go forward and create new memories i`m sure you will. You and Steve Marsh, really bring travel and touring to life, with new adventures.

Wonderful memories of Bergamo having visited with my parents, daughter and best friend. My friend lives in Bergamo with his family. Must go back soon....
Absolutely love Bergamo after visiting last year, I ate in the same cafe and got the delicious casoncelli. They're so proud of their local produce and recipes. Such a gorgeous place - it's really close to the beautiful lake iseo too, all the beauty of Como and Garda and none of the crowds

It would have been interesting to have compared the train journey with the one 38 years previously.
I recently went to Portugal, Lisbon and Algarve, 30 years after the first visit. Although my memories are not very vivid I can tell that the places had changed and become more mainstream European as well.
Italians really love the Fiat Panda. They are everywhere in this video 😯

Went to Bergamo for 4 nights in 2019. Beautiful old town. Did a day trip to Milan too. Would recommend Bergamo for a day trip or weekend break

We holidayed in Menaggio a few years ago and took a bus trip to Bergamo - beautiful city and I actually remembered the square and some places. I was enjoying too a visit to the beer and pizza experience!

As soon as I saw the title of this video I was so pleased to see you back in Italy. Bergamo is wonderful as are the thousands of small and medium sized towns all over Italy. I've bern living here now for nearly 50 years and I absolutely adore Italy.

I did my first interail trip in 86. Was particularly impressed with the Dutch and Swiss rail networks , Then i when i got back i had to use the London underground and a local service from Paddington. oh my God, I was not impressed 😒😡.
Thanks to Ryanair using Bergamo as their choice of airport for Milan(and its not much further out than Malpensa)I have stayed in Bergamo a number of times in recent years.Its well worth a couple of days or more and thanks Scott for sharing your trip there.

It is indeed a beautiful city, Scott. The architecture is stunning, although, I was getting distracted by pizza, beer, and gelato 🤣 I have only been to Italy a couple of times, both times to Venice, but would love to explore other areas of Italy. Andy.

I know Bergamo for Carlo Goldoni's comedy "The servant of Two Masters" and its main character Truffaldino (the 18th century comedy was turned into a film in my country in 1976 so everyone heard of Berasmo 😊)...

Looks a very nice place. I like the way you make maximum use of your time on any trip you do. As a widower your videos have given me great inspiration and as a result I've made 3 short European trips (courtesy of Ryanair) already this year. Their Discovery app is really good for getting the cheapest fares.

Side note: You must have some metabolism, you never put any weight on from drinking beers,coffee and pizza ha ha.
I flew into Bergamo 11 years ago as we do using Ryanair for Milano. If I'd have know it was this beautiful, I'd have paid a visit rather than have my sister in law collect us from the airport, they live in Milano at the time.
Fun fact: Brown as a locomotive colour was not at all uncommon. Early Swiss electric locos were painted brown, as were Swedish electrics. Mostly to match the wood planked bodies of older engines and coaches. Also the steam locos of the French Etat du Nord were chocolate brown. The Italian paint scheme was called Isabella&Castaneo (Isabella, a muddy brown, was named after Queen Isabella, and Castaneo is Italian for chestnut). But I do agree, the present paint schemes are nicer :)

If you love tunnels, you should go to Ventimiglia, the Italian coastal town next to the border with France. It has a tunnel which goes under the mountain with the old town on top, and in the middle of it, there is a regular elevator which takes you to the top for free. And Monaco is nearby too, with its beautiful underground train station.
You should come and try in Como the funicular!

Surely it's programmed into a large group of 10 year olds to make noise at any opportunity? And when the surrounding buildings amplify that noise several times over, it would seem a dereliction of duty not to :)
But props to Scott for re-visiting Bergamo. Not sure why he visited in the first place. I'm probably a similar age to him and I went Interrailing in 1987. We visited the obvious places - Milan, Venice, Florence, Naples - forget why we skipped Rome (probably too expensive - unlike Scott, shamefully I didn't keep a diary). But I wouldn't have heard of Bergamo a the time and I think the place only entered my consciousness when I discovered the football team Atalanta were from there. And then it became the epicentre of Corona in Italy...
And yes the toilets on FS. Peeing onto the train tracks was a novelty. a bit like having a pee in the woods :)

I stayed at Le Funi Hotel - round the corner from the upper funicular. So you're up in the old town, yet super close to all the public transport - especially the airport bus! They were super friendly, had lots of great advice, huge clean rooms and great prices! A fantastic gelato place and cafe down the road too!
