- Hiking and wild camping at a wee mountain lochan (Lochan Coire Thoraidh) in Glen of Orchy.I used the chance to try out my new mld duomid inner tent as well as trying out a tyvek groundsheet to see how it performs on wet, boggy scottish ground.
What a beautiful lochen, a lovely place to spend the night.
Every now and then, it's great to stumble on an outdoor superstar!
Not really sure how I should react…let me know when you find one? 😂👍
@StripeyHatGuy you are that superstar brother!
Good to have you finally back again Stripey. Good to see a real world test with a tyvek groundsheet- thanks a lot Stripey!!!
Cheers! Sometimes you just need to try 👍
I love your tent especially the inner... with regardvto the ground sheet, if u buy a double emergency bag usually orange and cut in two if needed and it is totally waterproof..and also can be used in an emergency.... ahhh pasta bolognaise u can't beat it up in the mountains for sure... you can really see how much you love it. Thks again Stripey for the vids, so inspirational to look at straight after in my small diy camper after getting soaked on a hike :) M ☘️ u were missed, Great to see you back again. Life without Stripey is just absolutely terrible. :)
Interesting solution with the emergency blanket…are they strong enough? I have only limited experience with emergency blankets and they are far to fragile for me…
Thanks a lot!
Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy they are extremely strong 💪... no water will get through and pretty light :)
Scotland is such a gorgeous place. Very lucky to have this on our doorstep. Great video!
Thanks a lot! Scotland is just incredible 🏴❤️
Great vid mate nice little spot 👍👍
Thank you very much Dave!
Good to see you back Stripey.
Thanks mate!
Hello Mr Stripey hat guy ! Its too bad you had to wear the burka to enjoy your trip 😂 , the beasts are still bad it seems , when does it stop ? The pasta bolognese strikes again , it makes the Stripey hat guy happy to have his comfort food on the trail 😅 thanks for sharing
Hi Mr. Pecheur 👋, the peak of the midge season is roughly from March - September (basically all summer 🙈), kind of depending how cold it is. In autumn we have the strong winds and winter is actually nice 👍.
Just dehydrated more minced beef…no shortage in sight 😂👍
@@StripeyHatGuy 😅👌
Superb Stripey! Great location!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Allan!
Glad you enjoyed some time with the family. Great to see you back out again. Midges looked a bit troublesome that trip, bigger inner looks great for spending some time hiding away from them.
Yeah it is definitely a game changer for me the bigger inner tent. I don't thing that I will use it very often as I still prefer to sleep without an inner tent but in situations like that it is worth every gramm 😂.
Thanks a lot for watching!

@@StripeyHatGuy I'd carry an extra kilo or two if it saved me from the beasties 🤣
@@kevinchisholm1701 absolutely! 😂
I think you and your adventures are absolutely marvellous and your pasta bolognese made my mouth water.
Thanks a lot Blue Bell!
Great vid Stripey, is there a period in the year when the ‘wee beasties’ aren’t about? The setting was fantastic, and you are right, the sound of rain is really nice👍
Nice one stripey, ha.. Yip its a nightmare round the Lochan.. I ended up on that little top... Great wee spot tho.. 👍
I assume the top is better? Yeah is a lovely place and easy to reach when not much time is available 👍
Great to see you back stripey, one does love a dose of stripey goodness! 👍
Hahaha thank you very much! Glad to be back out again 😀
Stripy Hat Guy sponsored by Pasta Bolognese 😂
Fuelled and sponsored by Pasta Bolognese 😂😂😂
Good to see you back on you're adventures Stripey. These midges looked bad! Stunning campsite at a lovely wee Loch. All the best.
Thanks a lot Gordon! Yeah not ideal conditions…just glad to be out again and having a little bit of peace and quiet 😊
Hi Stripey 👋. I liked your inner, looked comfortable with the space. I’d like to try this dehydration business, I remember you made a video on this before. Good to see you out again Stripey. ATB Serk
Hi Serk 👋,
Yeah is a complete game changer in comparison to the Lanshan inner, almost a palace! You should definitely give it a try, you can give it a go with your oven first and when you like it just get any dehydrator (cheap is good enough) and after a few meals you are already in the plus money wise. Actually considering to show some other meals as well, tried some during the holiday with the family but I assume most people are not into things like that…

@@StripeyHatGuy Hi Stripey. I can test in the oven! I did not know that. Good way to test, and just so good to know you can have a good square meal when out. I know I’d enjoy the dehydrated recipe videos for sure. Maybe you’ll turn into the Gordon Ramsey for the wild camping world, and your signature dish will be pasta bolognaise 😂. I think I’ll have to try that dish in the oven as my experiment. Will need a thermal pouch too and those zip lock bags that can withstand boiling water.
@@serkd37 not sure where you live but I use the “freezer” bags from coop. Yeah it does work with the oven, you might need to leave the oven door open when your oven can’t do 75-90 degree Celsius - not perfect for efficiency but definitely good enough for a trial. I did this a few times before I decided to get a dedicated machine for it.
Hahaha Gordon Ramsay of camping food - but I guess I could share some more recipes 😎👍
@@StripeyHatGuy I’m just outside north London in Hertfordshire. There’s coop near me, thanks for that. The dehydrated meals are not only good for camping, you can make a few meals and take to work if you wanted to.
That is a perfect place to camp. Nice setup. Enjoyed it.Have a wonderful day.
Thanks a lot mate!
I have used a Tyvek sheet on a 5-day solid rain WHW in February. Yes, the porch section was damp but there were never any puddles. The floor of the inner was always dry and I spent 12h+ in the tent. I'm not sure if I like the noise of the Tyvek or the bright white colour. It kind of helped finding stuff at night as it reflects the torch light but then in summer it keeps the tent too light for my taste.
I think the noise and colour is something I can cope with for the benefit of the robustness. I am still undecided on the dampness so 🙄
Fabulous spot to camp. However you were certainly challenging yourself with the midges and the ground damp! I do have a question - when you prepare your dinner, why do you pour your meal out of the plastic bag and into the metal bowl? Why not just put the bag into the bowl (to support it) and eat it out of the bag? It would save you cleaning the metal bowl, and the bag already contains the meal.Regardless, love the vlogs. Love the journey.
Oh the only reason for that is that I prefer to eat out of the pot. Cleaning is pretty simple, I just pour some water in, clean it with my fingers and drink the water - yes it has some "food" taste but it doesn't bother me ;-)
Great video Stripey 😍👍..It looks such a brilliant spot and the tents looking great 😁..Just those pesky critters 😂..Enjoyable video mate 😍
Cheers
Robert
Cheers Robert👍
Hi there Stripey, great to see you back out again. Lovely location mate, looks like you have been treating yourself to some new boots as well! 😀
Thanks for sharing your adventure with us as always. All the best, Dave 😀🥾⛰🏴
Thanks mate! Yeah still in the process in walking them in - so far so good 👍
@@StripeyHatGuy They look smart mate. 👍
There's only 1 Stripey Hat guy, One Stripey Hat guy.... 🦓🎩🤠
Still remember that trip- was a good one 😊👍
Nice one Stripey!😁
Thank you very much Ali! 👋
I recognise the place - I climbed Ben Donachain earlier this year and thought I would visit that lochan afterwards, but bad weather was coming in so I turned back. It looks beautiful. It's a fabulously scenic area.
And I'm inspired by that tent setup with the spacious inner to shelter from the midgies. However I recently bought a great lightweight tent so I'll stick with that for the time being.
Yes it is a really nice place, haven't been up to Ben Donachain yet only made it up to the Heart Loch yet 😕. In general I think people overvalue gear too much (at least on youtube), it is more about going outside and having a good time. In my feed I get plenty of those gear people who used the tent, shoes,.... only once and giving questionable advice imho.
Anyway, thanks a lot for watching - ATB Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy It's worth going all the way to the top in clear weather just for the views! Ben Lui on one side and Cruachan on the other.
Its a stunningly beautiful place but my days of damp camping being food for the midges is probably over. A crisp winter or a dry spring would be great but a damp late summer without any wind, rather you than me 😉
😂👍
I've got exactly the same set up you barring that I use a polycro groundsheet and use a sol escape bivi to put the sleeping bag in for damp protection
Good to hear! I am not to keen in the polycro thing, it is just very fragile - said this I used it now several times and I only damaged it in the first night (Last Taste of Winter - Video). I am actually considering the Tyvek + Bivy bag (Borah Bivy) even when it is wet, as the "leakage" isn't so bad...just damp and I thing I can handle this easily!?
Nice wee camp.👍
Cheers mate!
Yeah! A new video!
Good to see you back tyvek is more of a breathable membrane the homewrap is to allow the house to breath but keep any water in droplet form on the outside so it's not completely waterproof I believe there's different types tho and they have a hh so some are more waterproof
Hi Craig, I read basically the same about it but had no experience with it. I tried it at home with a sponge in between to pieces, kneeled on it and pressed some moisture through but wasn’t sure how bad it will be in reality…I can see the usage of it but I don’t think a soggy Lochan environment is one of it 😂.
Thanks a lot!
Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy it's better than nothing and stops the worst of the water getting through and giving the inner floor more of a chance of staying dry
Very true! Not sure so that it is enough reason for me to carry it - guess for those conditions it will be so polycyro sheet even when it is super fragile…or just the inner tent in midge season 👍
@@StripeyHatGuy yea polycro is much lighter I think tyvek works better for really rocky/stoney ground
Good to see you out again dude since we chatted on Devils staircase …. What’s your thoughts on the sheeting then ??
Hi mate 👋,
I really like it and I think I will use it definitely more often! I mean the ground was completely wet and even then it was only damp. I assume on hills or slightly better ground it won’t be damp at all.
The bright colour isn’t bothering me…makes it easier to find stuff/insects/…and the width is much better than from the polycyro which I have. In Winter I will use the polycyro as it is 100% waterproof.
Good video
Thank you very much!
I'll have to have a wee nosey around this area Stripey.
You can actually walk behind the “ridge” down and make a loop out of it…unfortunately I had not enough time for that😏
@@StripeyHatGuy I'm scouting out a route on OS right now.😉
Oh No ... the McMidge tracked you down again.
My Father used to blame having had Yellow Fever as the cause .. but I'm sure he had it the wrong way round.
Hi what water filter you using? Thanks
I am using the katadyn befree. 👍
Alone. Well apart from several million wee midgies!!!!
Junge, diese perfekten Grüntöne bekommt nur ne Fuji hin...
Hehe, 'frickle' from German fricklig. Not sure that translates to English other than fiddly😂
😂👍
