  • In this episode of "What Is On My Wrist" Cam talks about a "Neo Vintage" classic, the Rolex Explorer I Ref 14270. Cam provides a brief history of the Rolex Explorer 1 Ref. 14270 and talks about how the Ref. 14270 bridges the gap between a classic vintage Rolex and a watch of more modern design and build from Rolex.

    If there were no lug holes on this case how would you remove the bracelet?

    • @craftandtailored
      @craftandtailored  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The 14270 used the 558B end links. There are two variants of the 558B end links one that is not notched and one that is notched. The no holes cases used the notched variant of the 558B. The SEL bracelet was introduced in the year 2000 with the 114270 below are examples of 14270's with notched and non-notched end 😀
      Holes Case "Non-Notched"
      1991 Rolex Explorer I (Ref. 14270) Unpolished (Non-Notched 558b)

      -No Holes Case "Notched Endlink":
      1998 "tritanova" 14270 has the 558b end links which are notched so you can remove the end link from the backside of the case.

    I originally bought a bb36 because I wanted something that looked like an explorer and i did love it, but I found myself watching videos on explorers all the time still. Went ahead and sold the bb36 and got a 14270 for a great price in great condition. I SUSPECT I’m done buying watches now😂

    I love how this watch featured so many transitionary elements.. from lume material to solid linked bracelet, from matt to glossy dial. As someone born in year 1989 (same year the explorer I was released), feel like this watch fits perfectly the transitions you experience in your own life. Growing up in the 90s transitioning into 2000s new tech internet era until start of working life marking the discontinuation of ones conscience free youth :D I think i need this watch!

    I find my Rolex collection is very much migrating to early 90’s, tritium, lug holes examples. This neo-vintage era is quickly become by my favourite era (I’ve add a 16610, 16570 and most recently a 14270, just need to eventually find a nice 16700 GMT).

    Got my 114270 for the updated movement and so the indexes and the Arabic numerals stayed the same color. Wish they updated the numerals with the ones found on the 116000 OP just for consistency. But w/e I love my explorer 1 regardless. Great episode guys, stay safe.

      Just out of curiosity Christian, do you ever run into any issues putting leather straps on your 114270? I own one and I had to get curved spring bars because otherwise, the edge of the case would chew up my straps due to the lug holes being closer to the case than the 14270.
      Thanks!

    • @christianamato4193
      @christianamato4193 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stuartpeterman2281 I had to do the same. Ripped up a very expensive strap. The curved spring bars from toxic nato have been a necessity.

      @craftandtailored  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      we could dive into the minute details of the 1016 but we didn't want to make the 14270 vids about the history and an insane number of 1016 variants! We plan to cover that in additional episodes!

    • @andrewgiblin3468
      @andrewgiblin3468 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What Cam said was completely correct, the 1016 was ascetically unchanged throughout its 30 year run but there are technical differences in the reference. Seemed pretty clear to me.

    Currently looking for an Explorer 1. Still not decided on 14270 or the updated 114270. Anyone know if the solid end links make a big difference in quality of fit?

    • @benwong1111
      @benwong1111 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay W SEL just would never lose shape on hard knocks or abusing and give loose the loose jingling noise. In term of comfort, i think the hollow end link would be more comfortable on smaller wrist. Shouldn’t have much difference on bigger wrist.

    • @stuartpeterman2281
      @stuartpeterman2281 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went for the 114270 because of the solid end links but also the lume is luminova as opposed to tritium so it doesn't degrade. This was a big deal since it's my everyday watch. Also, keep in mind that the lug holes are drilled closer to the case on the 114270 so you likely want curved spring bars on it or the case will chew up your leather straps and my natos wouldn't even fit.

    What’s the jacket? Schott?

  • @marshalbass7098
    @marshalbass7098 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey sir I have a question. Does the 14270 get tight when you are winding it and stop after a out 30-40 turns? Everything I read says they are supposed to have a slip clutch that protects it from over winding, and the crown just keeps turning. But I'm wondering if this feature started with the cal 3130?

    • @craftandtailored
      @craftandtailored  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you are correct as the mainspring is loaded and then ultimately fully wound it will get and feel tighter yes but the watch does have a slip clutch that will prevent over-winding..

    • @wc6502

    I really enjoy all your videos, amazing choice of watches, and always some interesting facts. But I wish the video quality was a bit better. Maybe try less compression? Smaller aperture so that more stuff is in focus? Camera with better AF? I’m not sure, but I do wish I could see those sweet watches in crispy sharp 4K, or even sharper 1080 for that matter.
    Anyways, it’s just a thought. I’ll keep watching even without it :).

    • @craftandtailored
      @craftandtailored  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback will pass this info along to our team and see if it makes sense for us to film in 4k. I know 4k makes the gear run hot and rips through the batts quickly we have some new gear in the works and some additional tools that will allow for 4k. I love 4k as well but I think most viewers watch it in 1080 on a mobile device but I think it may be possible with some gear upgrades to get these done in 4k! sincerely appreciate the feedback, we are always honing the content knife over here and are progressing with each video!!
