My grandmother Christine (Mauch) Lukas was born in 1897 in Menominee, Nebraska just south of Yankton. She spoke often of using the pontoon bridge….as well as crossing the ice in winter. Meridian bridge very well may be the reason she met and married my grandfather, Edward Lukas….himself born in Yankton in 1893. Though he lived many years in my hometown Sioux City, he had a life long love affair with his birth place and is buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery out on Douglas Street near his father Wm. Lukas.

The double decker bridge. Known wide and far.

Oh man. Scariest bridge in the world for truckers going north. One young cattle farmer from Minnesota sent his brother across first to stop the south bound traffic so he could cross on the lower deck where you had the steel girders to protect you on both sides.
    Did I mention terrifying.

I'm still terrified 40 years later thinking about it. North bound lifts you up in the sky with only air to look at and water if you dare look. Slink down in your seat to hold the steering wheel and tremble.
