Shooting the Yugoslav M49/57 Submachine Gun

    Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
    The Yugoslav M49/57 submachine gun looks very similar to the Soviet PPSh-41, but it constructed quite differently, and has a much larger recoil spring. The question is, how will it shoot? Will it be fast and controllable like the Papasha or slower like the Sudayev?
    Thanks to Marstar for letting me examine and shoot their M49/57!

    I like the fact that when you compare the slow-motion footage from this and the PPSh-41 you can see the PPSh rattles quite a bit between its upper and lower, whereas this gun doesn't. Nice to catch those tiny distinctions made by different manufacturing processes.

    Trigger slap is obviously very clever slav engineering to remind our soldiers to not waste ammo on full auto. After all 7.62×25mm Tokarev rounds don't grow on trees, not even in most glorious Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

    The slow motion footage reveals a silky smooth operation. The bolt look well decelerated before impacting the receiver, and a very ridged barreled action, with little flexing.

  • @MrHws5mp
    @MrHws5mp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    The thing I find myself looking for on the slo-mo videos these days is parts flex and bounce. It's really quite scary how much supposedly 'solid' bits of the guns move around relative to each other when you see it slowed down. This one seems remarkably solid, but then it's not firing the most punchy round in the world.

      Standard surplus 7.62 tok in a pistol runs about 1700-1750 in a smg it’s right around the 2000 mark. I think it’s a pretty damn good smg round. The stuff you buy nowadays is more like in the 1400ish range. That’s why I ordered rounds from 1950 and they are still perfect run just fine.

    Not really sure why people are comparing this to the PPSH41... yes, aesthetically the two guns are similar, but in terms of design it is more like a Beretta Model 38. In that sense, the two guns are extremely different and pretty much polar opposites when it comes to the two schools of thought at the time as to what constituted a good SMG. On one hand, we have the heavy, machined, mid-low rate of fire, high stability and high quality Beretta. On the other, we have the cheap and quick to produce, relatively light, high rate of fire, get as many bullets downrange as quickly as possible at the expense of accuracy PPSH41. Which one is better? I really can't say... it often depends on the situation. I will say the PPSH definitely had a greater impact during WW2, and it was often used by the German and Finnish forces that were able to capture it. If I had to choose between the two in a battle to the death, I think I'd go for the Yugo as it has better accuracy and probably won't have the same feed issues as the PPSH. One last thing I should mention is that not all PPSH-41's are made the same, it also depends how well your specific gun was made because quality control back then was almost non-existent.

      Rage Against The Hygiene it's only a PPSh-41 in basic layout and magazine choice. Mechanically, it's a different gun more closely based on the Beretta submachine guns. It also has an easily removable barrel, which the PPSh-41 doesn't have. Your question of why not just build a straight clone is valid, but the Yugoslavians decided on this route for whatever reasons. They _may_ be documented somewhere, but I don't know if anyone has ever found any such documents.
