it's a long standing 'trick' from at least the days of world war one sniping (I think I have read it in Hesketh-Pritchard), and from my range days in the 80s, a damp t-shirt or scrim face veil was used on dry dusty ranges. I am surprised it's taken Ian that long to 'discover' it!

Used m76 in army, shot god knows how many rounds, never had a stoppage and it was in war, cleaned rarely, with army ammo. I never had any issues with magazines and they were army magazines used god knows how many times. Later I got dragunov since we were low on 8mm and I wanted to smash it with a hammer and I was happy only when I got my 76 back... It is classic AK, robust and reliable...

    * CARTRIDGE FIX&TIP *
At #4:54 of vid there was a cartridge jam I was familiar with from back serving in Serbian Army. It occurs in several situations: low spring tension, cartridge over greased, or over dry.
    - Dismantle cartridge (look at the bottom button), and pay attention not to lose spring in the process (cover your eyes).
    - Clean all grease and dust/particles mixed with a grease
    - Apply new grease and/or oil (little more for humid and wet environments, and little less for dry and dusty)
    - Extend spring a few times to the 2-3x of neutral length (5x times for 30 round magazines like AK47 derivatives, you'll find right ratio)
    - Put all back together, and repeat the process after really extensive use or twice yearly
This is a pure cartridge issue, do not connect it to a gas block regulator!!!! This is 8mm (7.92mm to be exact) round and it is heavy. More heavy round is, more common this issue will appear (combined with smaller capacity cartridges where springs are shorter) without proper cartridge maintenance (at least Black Arrow 50cal. operators know what I am talking about).
This applies to AK47 cartridges also, and BRAND NEW cartridges. You never know for how long cartridge was in some depot, or for how long cartridge stands fully loaded without use (new cartridges was never fully loaded and left for some time)

"Water trick" is in army field manual, I suspect... I can't remember where for US army, though. Could be about city fortifications e.t.c. In Russian field manual it was about MG positions and such, as dust also gives the shooter position up.

To be fair, anything they bring in and slightly modify (ie, trimming a magwell to double stack...) is usually of good quality. However, when they make their own components like receivers and barrels, there is a tendency for the gun to malfunction. I can recall that the AK74s they used to assemble would quite literally blow up around the front trunnion after a certain amount of rounds or abuse.
I pretty much have zero faith in the bulk of American AK production for this reason. It will take some time for these companies to finally realize that they not only have to have an exact nationality in mind when modelling their rifles, but also have the correct specs and most importantly, good QC.

A couple of decades ago, I met an FFL who specialized in rare and collectable guns of the Old West. He made a living off lever-action rifles used by the Lakotah at Little Big Horn, for example. He had a commission to obtain an ivory-grip Cold Dragoon (I don't know which generation). He found it but couldn't resist taking out and shooting it in his backyard. The ivory broke and the gun became relatively worthless. He lost a lot of money on that non-transaction.

Preventing the front of the follower diving downward in the magazine after being hit by the bolt. Similar to the followers on modern AR mags. A problem solved years ago on popular AR mags.
Second, I absolutely despise the corner on the back lower part on the receiver. At the top of the pistol grip. For me, it bites into the web of my shooting hand. My 76 was a 922 rifle from an Ohio manufacture. Just wondered if others had this situation?

Ian I'm not sure if you read comments after so many hours. I want to mention a few things about M76. I have M76 on AWO receiver and had some issues at first. I noticed that a bolt was catching on a left side of the receiver right before it would rotate on chambering stroke. (could be doing on extracting stroke as well) First due to a poor manufacturing, there was a lip of metal that was sticking out on and also the channel where the bolt travels in bolt carrier was sharp and abrupt. Also the piston would hang slightly in a gas tube or gas regulator. This is what I did 1. removed the sharp lip on the lug where the bolt was catching with a fine file. 2. Removed abrupt and sharp edges with fine file and polished the cam of the bolt and cam channel with polishing compound and a drill. I used orange NUSHINE IIG6 3. Polished the piston where it makes contact with a gas tube with the same compound. 4. Polished inside of the gas tube, FWD section of it, that guides the piston in to a gas regulator. 5. Polished the gas regulator. 5 Removed excessive paint and polished the hammer face and everything on the trigger group, including pins. Took it out yesterday and ran about 100 rounds of ppu commercial and recommended grain ammo. After tasks performed I had zero malfunctions. Well bolt would not stay open after last round, but that's probably due to worn magazine. I am not a gunsmith, but have strong mechanical background so if you guys don't feel comfortable with doing any of that, please don't. As I said, I did all of that and rifle functions as it should. If any of you guys who are reading have any questions feel free to email me alexandrkarmanov64@gmail.com I will repost this in his m76 video as well, but I was hoping he would see it because M76 is truly a gorgeous rifle.

I am surprised it does not have an ant-tilt follower design like our M16 mags. The gun seems to have potential. I agree the PPU ammo may be a tad light. The only way to know is to use a chrono. Of course, handloading can easily find a good recipe. The 8x57 and the 30-06 are extremely similar ballistically and will use most of the same powders. Varget and 4064 are a tad faster than the traditional 30-06 powders, but may work well. Then there are the usual suspects like 4895, 4350, 760, etc. There are plenty. Don't have a manual handy, that is just from memory. Looks like the gun has a lot of potential if those little bugs can be worked out. Great video as always. Thank you

Zastava factory said, after i sent them the gun, the problem was the bold carrier group, which should be a little bigger to pick up the rounds (to less material on bottom). They also said, that i should not use ppu, because the rounds would be to long and this would cause feeding problems with the mags. I cant proof the second case to be true, but after they gave me a new gun with a new bold, everything worked fine (also with ppu🤷🏻‍♂️).

As I followed your cameraman looking downrange, it appears that there is a light-colored slope going down from left to right in the sight picture. The scope on the left is also throwing off your verticle, only the other way because of your change in windage. High to the right changed to low on the left. The third set put your shots near the center. I have just watched three videos of you shooting at this range. In all three, the shots were drifting to the side because of being non-verticle. This bag was much more stable than in the first two videos, but I suspect the bag for the basic spread of your shots. It could also be the trigger is teaching you to flinch, maybe pulling your shots wide, but that is just a wild guess. Thanks for sharing! Stay healthy!

This sort of combination of factors is where a control test becomes valuable... get yourself a spotter and a good solid rest with enough room to change mags without moving the setup, a big gridded sheet, and an IR thermometer and just start shooting, marking hits, and barrel temps. Don't change the aim point, let the rifle send them where it goes on the same hold every shot. You'll have a reference for where your zero goes for any given barrel temp... cold, warm, hot, and 'don't frickin' touch', though I recommend ceasing testing before you reach "forend's on fire".

So you actually might have wanted to adjust left and up when you made your initial adjustments. Many times zeroing the M4 I've done the same thing and finally figured out that lateral and vertical adjustment are inverted.

Old/weak magazine springs tend to make the rounds rise up slower causing them to jam just like that.

Such a shame. Yet another stupid law destroys an otherwise fine firearm.

That water trick is actually recommended doctrine by US urban combat manuals, if I remember correctly. For the same reason you did it; to prevent dust clouds from being kicked up and blocking your sight line.

Maybe the bolt carrier is handling up on the Tapco hammer. I’ve seen it happen on a few AK’s.

PPU if not Match grade is 3-2,5 MOA ammunition by itself my AR here in EU shot ordinary PPU 2,5 MOA, a match grade PPU 1,5 MOA and S&B match grade 1 MOA or less I can't tell for mauser cartridge but my friend with AK have similar experience as I so at least 223 and 7.62x39 are quite bad so I dont use PPU anymore.
Not to mention a fact that this gun was build by we all know who with mismatched parts and same not original parts.

Load one an Azoom snap-cap first rd in to eliminate the mag-follower jam. Just something that came to mind as I observed that. Boy you just hear that report and see the recoil to remind one of how powerful that 8x57JS really is! I got an old 98 Gew. dated 1917 in that caliber. My '.30-06'.
