    We have a similar kind of bridge at our city. The Humber Bridge. Though has differences. Always fun to cross as a pedestrian/cyclist too. They close off pedestrian access sometimes

    At 5:14, the sign for Hylan Boulevard. For visitors to Staten Island, you don't want to miss that. Staten Island's version of the Las Vegas strip. About 8 miles of strip malls. Yeah, I'm a life long Staten Islander.

      Wrong! That’s was in Tacoma, WA. The bridge was first opened in July 1940, but it was destroyed by November, and then it was rebuilt and reopened in 1950. I’m talking about NYC and the Verrazano Bridge.

      You Can Walk On Brooklyn Bridge

    • @grasmereguy5116
      @grasmereguy5116 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can run across it during the New York City Marathon. If you run very slowly, that is like walking. You can also ride your bicycle across it during the New York City 5 Boro Bike Tour. I did that three times. The last time I did that tour, my bicycle chain snapped. So instead of trying to fix it the middle of the bridge, I just walked my bicycle over to the other side. But otherwise, there is no pedestrian or bicycle access, unfortunately. (There was originally supposed to be, but Robert Moses, New York City's master planner at the time the bridge was built, was opposed to the idea. They occasionally talk about adding a walkway or bike path, though.)

      What's under the bridge? Water (the Narrows, a body of water between the Atlantic Ocean and New York Harbor).
      How long does it take to cross? Depends on traffic. If you're going at speed limit at 30 mph and there's no traffic (like in the middle of the night), maybe 2-3 minutes? If you're speeding (don't speed), less. If it's rush hour and heavy traffic and an accident, you can be stuck there for 40 minutes or an hour. I think I was once stuck on it for like almost 2 hours.

      @@crazeyjoe That's when the big migration of Brooklynites to SI started in earnest, because the bridge was completed in 1964 (the upper deck). My family came in 1970, when I was just a year old, but the Brooklyn-SI migrations are still ongoing. I also went in the reverse direction, when I was part of the hipster/yuppie douchebag trend that was gentrifying Brooklyn in my 20s and 30s ( I was keeping it real by being an actual New Yawkuh!). But I couldn't afford to keep appearances in Park Slope anymore, so they had me expelled and deported back to Staten Island. But I'm in Grasmere, so it's practically Bay Ridge. I can see it across the water.

      If you google the date May 21, 2019, and the words Verrazano Bridge you can find information about what happened, although the name is anonymous in the news story.
      Unfortunately, many people have done this over the years, just like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Fewer people do it on the VZ because there is no pedestrian walkway, nevertheless there have been many incidents over the years .
