    Mg scales are cheap on Amazon now (7 yrs ago a little less so). A good source for ethanol is Lab Alley. I actually got 200 proof (100%) for cheaper than the 95% - but I was buying 5 gal. They don't sell really small amounts. Everclear is of course 95%, but not all US states carry it (some only do 75.5% - but you can dry it to 95%. Lots of youtube on that topic). I would love to do this diaphonization process

    Quick ?.. is it ok to use 10% neutral buffered formalin or is strictly buffered formalin or formaldehyde necessary? I believe I read that neutralized formalin is not as good of a fixative as buffered f... but I'm not sure.

    Hey, so kind of an odd question. I have been looking everywhere to properly skin a mouse while still keeping the tail and feet attached, but am having a really hard time finding it. Any tips or know anywhere with a good tutorial?

    • @TacoKellz
      @TacoKellz  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Megan Keller There are no odd questions here!! I do not know of any tutorials on how to skin a mouse while keeping the tail, hands, and feet. All I kept finding were how to skin a mouse for taxidermy, where they cut at the hands, feet, and tail, keeping them with the skin.
      I skinned my specimens very carefully, taking time to trim the skin as I cut away from the hands, feet, and tail. I was thinking about making a tutorial on how I skinned my mice specimens?

    • @spicy_noodles_666
      @spicy_noodles_666 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TacoKel okay cool. I just didn't know if there was another way D: if at any point you do make one, that would be amazing!! but if not, I can manage being super careful and tending to the specimines to make sure they are skinned pretty :) lol Thanks a ton! very much appreciated!!

    Thanks for the videos! I just have a question that I'm hoping you could answer:
    What if the mouse has fur? Would I have to remove the fur first, or would it fall off on it's own while I'm preserving it?

    • @TacoKellz
      @TacoKellz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For the process of diaphonization, if the specimen had fur, you need to skin it and remove the fur. The skin and fur prevent the chemicals/dyes/stains from penetrating the tissues and staining the bones/cartilage, and from digesting the tissues. (:

    Hi, great vids! I have a question: for materials you have 10% buffered formulin, in the fixing notes you said 70 formulin:30water. Thats 70ml of buffered 10% formulin? Just making sure 👍

    Hello, I was planning on doing this but I was told the trypsin wasn't actually that useful since it was the KOH that was doing most of the work, but you're saying it is absolutely necessary...what is it then? :/

  • @Angel_is_so_Random
    @Angel_is_so_Random 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So are you doing a 70:30 from a 37% formaldehyde to get a 10% formalin, or are you taking a 10% formalin and doing a 70:30 mix of that? Its confusing in the list...

  • @chunkymurps
    @chunkymurps 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The process was developed in 1977 so it's been around for a really long time. So from the time of this video that was less than 40 years ago. Wow! That really is a long time.

  • @joshe5928
    @joshe5928 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    hello! great video - very helpful! i just started getting into diaphonized specimens and have a couple questions - was wondering if you could help me? first is, how do you get your specimens to float in the middle of the glycerine? mine float to the top and don't stay in the middle of the jar. second, is it safe for them to be in light (like a window), or will that damage them? thanks in advance for your info!

    • @TacoKellz
      @TacoKellz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much!!! :D I really appreciate that!!
      1. I've found that if you place the specimen in a jar that is too large for it, the specimen will float to the top and not really "sit" well in the center of its container. I would suggest to try a smaller, slightly snug, holding container!
      2. I believe that it is completely fine for them to sit by a window. The natural, white light really highlights the intricate beauty of each specimen! I haven't heard of anyone really having a problem with any specimens by light!
      Hope this helps! (:

      +Shawna Gibson As prices of chemicals and other necessary materials needed can change through out different areas and in other parts of the world, I cannot confidently state an accurate price/cost range. You would have to find the materials in your area (from sites, or nearby stores, etc.) and calculate the costs and shipping costs. I can though say that a very loose price/cost range would be a few hundred dollars or so for everything.

    2 questions:
    When you purchased some of the chemicals at a "science" store, did they ask you for a taxidermist license or another type of license?
    Can you skin and clean the organs of the specimen before preserving it in formalin?

    • @TacoKellz
      @TacoKellz  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. When I purchased my chemicals at this science store in my area, no they did not ask me for any type of license
      2. Yes, you can, and should, skin the specimen (if there is fur) and clean out the organs, then place the specimen into the formalin!

      Spooky it is expensive to start for scratch. I think the most expensive thing is alcian blue, and you could just skip this step and stain just the bones. Enzymes are also expensive and we use KOH in our lab to clear specimens, it’s not the best but it works.
