I was thinking " he goes through a lot for just a pen" ! But the end result is fantastic ! Thanks very much for sharing Lynn .... a great lesson in patience !! Take care, Dave
Lynn -- Thanks for this video. You may have helped me resolve an issue I was having with some segmented blanks I had made. They were coming apart after drilling. I think I may have gotten the epoxy too hot when I drilled the blanks. Your tip of using denatured alcohol (and showing how much time you take to drill) may be the solution I was looking for.
+David Walser hey thanks foe watching David, yea just make sure the epoxy is cured (don't rush that) and be patient drilling with. Sharp bit and I think you'll reduce your failures. I still have failures from time to time but not as often as I once did. Thanks for the comment.
That's a great looking pen Sir. Sometimes when I use aluminium I get discolouration on the wood, the light wood in particular. How would you prevent that from happening?
Hey Mike - Thanks for watching and yes I think I bought an aluminum sheet at Hobby Town. I have also used aluminum soft drink cans. But when I do I take the time to strip all the coatings from both sides. Thanks again.
Perfectly executed Mr.Lacey! If I may may point out something I have run into lately. The brass tubes on pen kits I have been receiving from different sources have been scuffed up as you say , but I have noticed a thin film of , what appears to be lacquer, I have been removing this with a piece of my 100 grit sand paper and scuffing them myself. I want to make doubly sure I have a proper bond. I dont know if you have run into this or not but I would appreciate a reply from you on whether the lazerline kits have this very very thin coating on the brass tubes.. Excellent video as always Sir, and thank you for sharing the "tricks of the trade" with all of us out here in "tube land". PS I now know why Bob collaborated with you on that one video!
Hey Mick, I hadn't paid any notice to a thin film as you say but I always scuff up pen tubes and clean with denatured alcohol and have never had an issue. Thanks for watching.
Yes Sir I understand the only reason I said anything about that was because in the video you mentioned that this pen tube came scuffed already and you didnt show you scuffing it up ,,,so just thought I would mention that .. thanks so much for the reply and kind words!
+arhaught Thanks you, I really like my segmenting sled wind yes there is a two part video on how I made the sled titled "How to make a segmenting sled". Thanks for watching
Hey Lynn, I really appreciate your video--one quick question--what and where did you get the dust collector intake 'hood' that is mounted to your lathe--I really want one of those!! Thanks--Don
+Eric Milligan thanks Eric and that has happened to me several times, particularly when I use rougher sand paper. I don't have as much trouble when I use 320 or 400 grit. It still happens accession ally. Thanks for watching and commenting.
It was very interesting I learnt a lot I am a beginner thank you for sharing your experiences thank you so much😊
Unreal! True artist. I'll be using the drill press technique on my next assembly.
Very nice job, using drill press is a good idea to could make a tool to go into the chuck nylon or similar
I was thinking " he goes through a lot for just a pen" ! But the end result is fantastic ! Thanks very much for sharing Lynn .... a great lesson in patience !!
Take care, Dave
+David Morgan Thanks David, yea you can't get in a hurry when doing the segmenting. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I really like your method of squaring up the ends of the pen blank. Great Idea.
+Edwin Leach Thanks, it works well for me and I never split or tear out a blank like I've had happen with barrel trimmers.
no doubt you are a well organized, knowledgeable artist/craftsman who like to help others become good at this craft, thank you.
+sam terian Thank you Sam, and thanks for watching.
Thanks for an informative video, quite inspirational. It has helped to take my pen turning to a new level.
Well done Lynn. thanks for sharing. Dave Winch, Beachmere. Queensland, Australia
Beautiful pen and a very educational video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks George
Very handsome. Love the contrast of figured dark wood and straight grain light. Beautiful CA finish. 😎👍
Great pen. Thanks for the video.
Could you use the same pattern with two brass tubes for a slimline pen. Love the channel.
Great idea with the alcohol. I have had blanks come apart with aluminum without it.
Awesome. Really like the idea for trimming the ends with sandpaper on the lathe and using the drill press for assembly and keeping the drill bit cool.
+Kenny Boothe Hey Kenny, thanks for the comment and a special thank you for watching. I appreciate it .
Very nice pen.
Thanks
James

Another amazing video. I think I will try this. Thanks for sharing.
+Lori B Thanks Lori, good luck.
My goodness, that mesquite is a beautiful wood. I knew it was really good for smoking Briskets, but I never realized it was so beautiful.
Hey John it’s pretty good for both uses. Thanks
That's a great looking pen Sir.
Sometimes when I use aluminium I get discolouration on the wood, the light wood in particular. How would you prevent that from happening?

Nice work... I learned some new things I will be using... do you buy the aluminum at the hardware store?
Hey Mike - Thanks for watching and yes I think I bought an aluminum sheet at Hobby Town. I have also used aluminum soft drink cans. But when I do I take the time to strip all the coatings from both sides. Thanks again.
¿Donde puedo comprar una de estas plumas?

Thanks Lynn! Great TH-cam I really like the way you set up your table saw. Do you have a TH-cam for how you made the fixture on your table saw?
+arhaught Thanks you, I really like my segmenting sled wind yes there is a two part video on how I made the sled titled "How to make a segmenting sled". Thanks for watching
I will do that Mate I highly recommend your chanell to who ever will listen to me thanks again mate
Have you tried air or vacuum to keep the drill bit cool?
Hey Richard - yes I have but both are noisy and this works for me. Thanks for the thought and for watching.
Hey Lynn, I really appreciate your video--one quick question--what and where did you get the dust collector intake 'hood' that is mounted to your lathe--I really want one of those!! Thanks--Don
+Don Davis Hi Don, that came from Rockler. It is almost to small for a mini lathe but it does work well. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Very nice job!!!! Regards BobLee
+Robert Lee / Bob Lee's woodshop. Thanks Bob
Drill a small pilot hole first. Works for me.
+keith norman thanks Keith for sharing and watching.
Lynn, I shiver when I see you using your fingers to remove the shavings. Aluminium shavings will rip your skin
After sanding you micro meshed with water or alcohol on wood ????
Hey Terry - After sanding I apply CA finish then micro mesh with water. Thanks for watching
These kits are known as ‘Zeta’ in UK. About 8-9 dollars each
Since I have many common size bits, I just change bits out when they get hot. For me it is easier.
+Edwin Leach I'm glad you have that luxury, I have to keep them cool while drilling. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
fnatastic work
Thank you Ralph
Sorry Lynn I should have said this happens when I sand the blank.
+Eric Milligan thanks Eric and that has happened to me several times, particularly when I use rougher sand paper. I don't have as much trouble when I use 320 or 400 grit. It still happens accession ally. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Everything, including that "Falcon" sold out over there. Not good for business, eh?
Sorry but they seam to be sold out a lot. Thanks for watching
@7:55 and imflamable
Talk too much.
