"To paint in oils is a beautiful way to paint, painting with oil pastels gives it character"-Lynn A beautiful flower painting Lindsay, very beautiful.🌹🍎❤️🤗
Heck yeah, oil pastels!! They're my favourite art medium right now, I've been loving them so much for a couple of months now. I'm always happy to see more oil pastel tutorials, there's far too few of them on TH-cam. I love all the little tips and tricks in this video, I'm sure I'll refer back to it a lot in the coming weeks :)
I feel so dumb. I never would have thought to use my silicone 'brushes" for blending like this. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Hope you're having a great weekend and I hope you have a great week ahead. Namaste.
WOW, Lindsay, this is beautiful! Love the Sketchbook Sunday series. Will definitely try the oil pastels on a pastel mat. Thank you so much for the inspiration, Love your art!!! Greetings all the way from South Africa
Maybe my favorite way to use oil pastels, especially if I want to work fairly large, is to use mat board. I'll take one of those 22 x 24, is it? sized ones, cut it into 2 or 4, and then cover it with a couple coats of acrylic gesso. I'm not that good at making the gesso neatsy-poo, but that's OK, because the irregular surface keeps me from getting too fussy about details, so I can work loosely. When I need to loosen up after too many watercolors, I may do one or two of these paintings. Really fun, like being a kid again! Also, this way, I can have different background colors and an automatic mat, since I'll leave 1-1/2 inch as a border with no gesso. The board is plenty stiff, so I can press down as hard as I want on the pastels. Just another idea for anyone who wants to try a different surface.
I had rewritten my tip today about using a vinyl eraser when we are doing some light mistakes when we are using light pressure with oil pastel to a certain extended ! Tk, continue to find and sharing yours tips and tricks by your trials and yours tutorials mediums comparaisons!
I'm excited to try this one when my Reubens get here tomorrow! And great tip on the colored pencils, I didn't know you could use them with the pastels. I found the silicone tools you mentioned for nails and they are in my cart lol...you enabler you haha! ;D
I guess it is shopping day today, I remember you talking about the silicone tips but I did not find them on your Amazon list which gave me an opportunity to watch this video again. I love the tips you gave will have to go to the dollar tree and get the finger protector. Your painting turned out beautiful.
The versatility of the silicone tools shook me. In a good way. I've only been using them for Sculpey sculptures. I saw one person using them to blend graphite and now you've used it on oils - plus mentioned nails and stamping. Interesting!
I'm in the middle of a major redo of my craft room (actually, I'm finally taking over the third bedroom so I actually *have* a craft room instead of a corner of the loft) but when I'm done I'm joining Critique Club. Can't wait!
I had just discovered than we can use vinyle eraser when we have to take off some extra pale or medium colours with oil pastels mistakes on your paper to certains entended in particular with watercolour such as Fabriano watercolour with more 25% cotton hot press paper or any mix-media papers, if you didn’t put an hard pressure on your pastels sticks. And you should erase your mistakes where they are still paper or any media on your paper already dry which it is not touch yet with oil pastels too much so! Hope this trick may be helpful to everybody of any how then!
I really like this, love those colors!! Simple but beautiful. so I know I am no professional but that is my take on this. lol. I think I would love to do this!!!. Maybe that will begin my journey again. still nothing done yet.
Delightful. BTW Every time I see you work in your sketchbook I think you should participate in the Brooklyn Art Library Sketchbook Project - I probably told you this a million times before...... :)
Thank you, Lindsay. I am definitely going to be trying this. I did buy the Paul Rubens metallic set of oil pastels (36) and they are pretty. I have only swatched them. I just want you to know there are no pigment numbers on them though. Also, I use the Sennelier Oil Pastel fixative for my oils pastels and it does 'set' them. I have used it on oil pastel drawings used with Sennelier Oil Pastels on Cans Mi Teintes paper and it does actually help set it. I think it has a siccative in it. I would like to see you do a soft pastel on Pastelmat in the future to get your thoughts on that. I find it reduces the dust greatly and holds many layers. I loved the demo and the quick version. I will be watching the real-time version soon. :)
Good to know! I sm interested in their pastel set. I wonder if they have pigment numbers. I have the mungyo water soluble iridescent oil pastels and haven't used them much. I should on black!
Have you ever used pastel in the pots? Could you or would you do them please, I bought some because I watched a video where they used them over watercolors and loved the way they looked now I have them and not finding much info about them... thanks You seem to know and use everything!
Love this! I just signed up for Critique Club yesterday and started working on this image last night. I'm using Canson Mi-Teintes paper (a blue from the pastel variety pad), Shuttle Art water-based gel crayons and Prismacolor pencils...and really enjoying all these new-to-me mediums. I have Pentel oil pastels and I do like them, but just didn't feel like dealing with messy hands right now. lol Plus I really wanted to try out the Shuttle Art crayons. Looking forward to posting my finished page in Critique Club and getting everyone's feedback. :)
Oh, and I get to use Prismacolor pencils on this piece thanks to your heads up about the sale on the 150 set, Lindsay! You mentioned that some reported they got "fakes", but my set seems fine (a couple were finicky to sharpen, but that's the nature of Prismas, right?) and I scored them for $68. So thanks! :)
I have just seen a video of someone talking about overtime surfaces of things rotting, this is off the topic of this video but I was wondering if one of your videos could you advise us on things to do and thing to prevent this from happing, as being a mixed media artist I got wild with all kinds of products but that was something I heard but don't know what to do in to preventing things of that.Thank you so much.
I never thought to use the silicon tools on oil pastels. I should just be brave and try different things together. After all, that's what sketchbooks are for.. Note. Check prices when looking at silicon tools. Mine are Master's Touch from Hobby Lobby and were half of the name brand in the stamping aisle. (Neither on sale). Also check size/shape of tips for what you think you need.
What would you normally color pastels on? How do they differ from the lyra crayons? Are those sticks what you would use to blend if you didnt want to use ur hands
Hi Lindsay, do you recommend the regular white pastels for blending, or the titanium. Paul Rubens offers a set of 6 in both. Maybe it doesn't matter? Thx
That was fun to watch. I haven't used pastels in ages. Lately, I just picked up watercolors and have watercolor paper. But, I have oil pastels in some art gift kits I got in past Christmases. I have Van Gogh brand. Are they going to be any good? What paper (besides the pastel matte) will work with them if I just want to experiment. I have a sketchbook, but that is for drawing. Is that too thin? I don't think the watercolor paper is going to work . . .and if it does, I certainly don't want to use my good Arches paper.
@@thefrugalcrafter Great, thanks! I just loved watching how to built up the color and shadows to bring that beautiful flower to out. Beautiful background!
Hi Linsay i have never used this media, i really dont like to get my hands dirty is there something else that can be used to blend large and small sections. Could you do more tutorials? Thank you so much
I'm not say I g this is the best use. I think they are best formidable applications like decorating metal and outdoor projects (personalizing bike helmets, decorating galvenized buckets etc) but it does the trick here too!
Could you do this only with Pastel pencils? I just can't manage oil pastels - they just turn into a mess when I try to use them! This is a gorgeous piece!
I recently bought the Paul Rubens oil pastels (not the macaron) and they don't look like yours. hobby lobby sells silicone tips by master's touch as well. They are softer don't know if yours are firmer. so glad you did oil pastels. love it !!!!

Yes, that sounds about right:)
Lovely picture, is there no way to use a workable fixative or protective spay in a sketch book?
You can use fixative
I have just seen a video of someone talking about overtime surfaces of things rotting, this is off the topic of this video but I was wondering if one of your videos could you advise us on things to do and thing to prevent this from happing, as being a mixed media artist I got wild with all kinds of products but that was something I heard but don't know what to do in to preventing things of that.Thank you so much.

Beautiful! Next on my list!
I have a Question, would you ever mix with baby oil?
Personally, I wouldn't because it would make them greasier.
What would you normally color pastels on? How do they differ from the lyra crayons? Are those sticks what you would use to blend if you didnt want to use ur hands
Lyra are firmer like caran cache neo2. I use all sorts of paper depending on the techniques I want to do.
@@thefrugalcrafter what can you blend the soft oil pastels w if not your fingers
Hi Lindsay, do you recommend the regular white pastels for blending, or the titanium. Paul Rubens offers a set of 6 in both. Maybe it doesn't matter? Thx
I'm not sure what i have.

Do you put varnish over this or a fixative? How do you protect it when framing? I’m an acrylic artist and I want to learn oil pastels too ☺️
Use a mat so the paper doesn't touch the glass. Thats all.
Buying some finger cots for blending. I found ones with little bumps and others that are smooth. Which works best?
Smooth
Hi Linsay i have never used this media, i really dont like to get my hands dirty is there something else that can be used to blend large and small sections. Could you do more tutorials? Thank you so much
You could wear gloves
Thanks Lindsay. Always wondered what oil paint pens were used for. 🤔

@@thefrugalcrafter I understand. But I frequently am looking for something to go in for the save with.😉😆
QUESTION: How do you store an unframed oil pastel? Thank you.
I wrap it in glassine so it doesn't smudge on anything else.
Can you post a link for the mungyos
잘보고갑니당❤❤❤
Could you do this only with Pastel pencils? I just can't manage oil pastels - they just turn into a mess when I try to use them! This is a gorgeous piece!
Sure but you might want to skip the background
Looks lovely! Does oil pastel eventually "set-up" like an oil paint?
Not fully but it does dry out a bit
Could you use water based oil paint on the pastel
Sure
I recently bought the Paul Rubens oil pastels (not the macaron) and they don't look like yours. If the seller is lightwish they are legit. They recently changed the font on the pastels. I have some with script and some with big printed letters.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks, the seller was Lightwish. Good to know they're legit; shame they got rid of the pigment information.
Thanks for replying.
I painted almost exactly this painting a year ago with watercolor and colored pencils ? Wats up with that.

Are the pentels really that good?
I think so however I have the old formula. They reformulated in 2019 and people say they smell now. I dont know if the quality differs tho
@@thefrugalcrafter got it
Hi Lindsay forgive me but I I had some health problems. Everyday I have always surprises 😞😞😞. Beautiful flower as always! Bye 😔😔
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you are feeling better soon.❤
The pentel set I bought does stink a bit but I love them anyway 😅
It's such a pitty that Pentel oil pastel is not lightfast. I really love them, but with that price well I can't expect more 😅
I am so guilty for rushing through the drawing stage when I just really want to paint or color lol.
I dont draw lol but i suppose a stencil would work
Oils eat paper. Gesso it first.
