    Part of the reason why guys like Magic, Bird, and Jordan are so revered is becuase their wasn't a group of reporters impersonating pro wrestlers tearing down their legacy for small grievances, many having nothing to do with basketball. Letigimately, if a modern basketball player passes up a shot with like 3 minutes left in a random regular season game, a bunch of talking heads will claim that they don't have that killer instinct, clutch gene, and are not elite.

    KD is right though. The media debate format has ruined the game and how a person views the top athletes. You really can't enjoy multiple stars without feeling like you have to take a side. They have also taking team concepts and turned them into one on one battles. QB vs. QB; Star vs. Star. It makes for great TV, but limits stars from having iconic brands. But if more athletes get their own media formats that could change.

      Typically, I don't care much for responses to comments that, in a word, simply pronounce, "Well said" (or, in the present day vernacular..."Facts." I mean - I really, REALLY hate that "Facts" meme...largely because it's almost universally being attributed to some comment that ostensibly was actually an opinion.] I don't find those sorts of responses offer much in the way of propelling the narrative, and can't help but feel - sometimes - their purposes are intended to foster "mob mentality" where cultivating fear of dissension being the actual purpose.
      In your case...I will make the exception. BECAUSE I ABSOLUTELY, WITHOUT QUALIFICATION, AGREE WITH EVERY WORD YOU SAID. If I may actually invoke another response trope I typically detest, but feel personally moved to express in this instance...

    The media has definitely enhanced the championship or bust mentality that has hurt the sport. Tanking only makes sense if making the playoffs and losing in the second round is unacceptable. If you tank you are invisible, but if you lose in the playoffs like the Jazz did, you get castigated. Further, the appeal of the NBA comes from the relationship between the players and the fans, and this constant attitude that Dame is some how a failure for not joining a super team kills that. LeBron went to Miami because the media decided that he was a failure for not winning in Cleveland. That is sort of the same reason Durant went to Golden State.
    The media constantly bellyaching about the greats of today is also responsible for killing the hype, but that is a separate thing.

    I get both sides. I think the issue with the debate shows is when you can tell when a person that is debating doesn't like someone so all of his takes will be biased and lack objectivity. For example, Skip with LeBron. Lebron put ten laughing emojis one time and Skip read more into it than need be. And now he doesn't like Luka and says Luka can't shoot. Like really. No one watching Luka's game will say he can't shoot. So when these debaters don't like someone it takes fun out of the debates.

    All these “analysts” do is try to discredit any negative feedback from players by calling them “sensitive.” The analysts never have the ability to self-reflect and admit when they are out-of-line when criticizing the athletes. All they want to do is be dismissive of the athletes standing up for themselves when the media disrespects them and talk about them
    as if they are inhuman. Can the Stephen A Smiths and Skip Baylesses of the media do their job without disrespecting athletes so much? Do they have to call them out of their names and go for the constant nasty insults? Do they have to paint a picture of the athlete being the scum of the Earth all the time? You want to put all sorts of nasty spins on athletes names like “Westbrick” and “Lechoke” but when they fight back it’s “oh, they are just so sensitive.” I wonder how sensitive some of these analysts jaws would be if they said some of those comments to their faces… 🤔

    • @raymondweaver2023
      @raymondweaver2023 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are being sensitive because that's the cost of doing business. If you are a top player or in the spotlight, they should have the discernment that this is what comes with it. Any great successful person who is in the spotlight will always amass haters/criticizers. It is what come with the game, or any field of success...like the song by Rico Richie, "if he ain't got no haters, he ain't poppin." All the people they speak heavily on are noteworthy players (MVPs, All-Stars, Scoring Champions, etc.)
      It's better to accept things for as it is, than complaining on something that will not change (human nature).

    • @Greego
      @Greego 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@raymondweaver2023 This is going to be long because I really think this is very important. First, I see your point… Some of these analysts just really cross the line. I agree that the players should be able to take a lot of criticism and they should have a thick skin but some of these analysts just go so far as to plainly disrespect them as men. It goes beyond even just roasting them and it becomes inflammatory.
      You are right that some things just come with the territory but if the analysts can dish it out then they should be able to take it too. When it is thrown back into their faces all of a sudden the players are said to be “sensitive” because they dish it back or defend themselves. I don’t think the players should just have to sit there and take all that without fighting back. More than anything, I think the analysts can do their jobs well without having to destroy the players reputations and assassinate their characters.
      Stephen A Smith (SAS) once said on live TV that he would trade away the man that is Andrew Wiggins for a box of cookies. An athlete’s kid, mother and father have to hear him trash their loved one like that on TV and Wiggins never did anything to Stephen A Smith.
      There is a history of black men being traded as if they are worthless or subhuman and he wants to say that on national television?
      SAS made the point that analysts have always done this but fans just were not able to read it all because the internet was not available back in the day and that is just not true. Journalism and reporting in media has changed drastically over the past few decades. It was a lot more about just reporting in the earlier days of the NBA. They did not go around destroying the players like they do now. These players are not animals or pets.

It has become a gossip column with popularity contest and honestly dumbing down the kind of fans we have these days. It is more about criticizing particular players borderline insulting players for clicks and views without any commentary on the game itself.
    And it's so sad that their opinion have financial implications for these players including manipulating talks on contracts, all-star and all-teams.
    Most importantly they can manipulate your legacy. The narrative they propagate stay online forever, it's why people who were not fans in d MJ, kobe, Hakeem, Bill Russell era know about these players. If they cultivate a false narrative about these players it's what future fans will think these players truly are.
    Best thing for players is to call out bullsh*t as they happen and shut it down, control your legacy and your narrative.

    Intense defense and hand checking led to many of the bad shooting games of the past. Many games were played where the _winning_ team barely broke 80 points. Its a different game today. Points are at a premium.

    Chris is right, these debate shows are the only reason I watch the NBA.... I was always a hockey guy until I saw Skip Bayless screaming at Stephan A, I was instantly intrigued and wanted to learn. Media is king, the only reason players have what they all have is because of "media". Respect your game kd, but man up my guy
