I don't care what ya'll say about Jack and Rose. I like their relationship and their codec calls in this game. Heck, this is my favorite metal gear game to play.. especially for the music. But Jack creates an atmosphere that puts the player in the heroes shoes, and even embarrasses the player for playing the game. Thanks to Kojima, beginning with Metal Geat Solid 2, the franchise didn't become cookie cutter stale. In MGS, Kojima broke the fourth wall in gaming, but MGS2 does even better.
The world is full of stories with unattached, socially maladjusted loners. While I wouldn't describe Raiden as 'well-adjusted', he seems to have an actual home life and a life outside the mission that isn't just, well, recovering from the trauma of the last mission. Backstory traumas aside, he's a relatively normal guy, and that's the appeal of the character for me at least. ...at least in this game.

Rose has a lot of really endearing dialogue, it's just sad that most people are more likely to hear her bitching about his empty room or about he doesn't want to talk about himself. A conversation I actually find adorable is Rose talking about her experience with Parakeets. (Calling her in front of Emma's)
I like how the Colonel asks her to call him Raiden for the duration of the mission instead of using his real name and she even says okay. Then she totally doesn't do that.
There's no way it'd work out. Rose is too important to Jack for him to leave her for a teenager. Emma is 16 -- at least a whole decade younger than Jack. Given his past, I don't think he'd be into a kid, and Emma's got a 'don't say incest' complex with Otacon (not to mention the developing maturity of a teen.) Rose gives Jack an adult relationship, and is a constant, reassuring presence to him during Big Shell. She gives him a reason to fight, and more importantly, a reason to come home.

Omfg... I was waiting for my plane to regain France because I passed an entire week for tourism in New York... I decided to see this video and i didn't know that there was the conversation of when Rose and Jack had their first meeting... I cried like a baby in the airport... This game is amazing, this country is amazing, i'll be back NY ! Count on it ! 😭😭❤

I gave Raiden a chance after the initial surprise/shock at his appearance as the primary player character/protagonist in MGS2 then I satisfied with him as the lead (he's no snake but he'll do just fine just like Nightwing/Dick Grayson is no Batman but he's still a cool superhero) and found him somewhat compelling (his backsory was pretty dark and badass and his reactions/emotions towards the events in the game mirrored my confusion) plus he can do flips woohoo and he has a babe to flirt with.

@MetalBlossom606 yep, same here - i liked the idea of playing as Raiden throughout most of the game because it gave an "outsider" look at the world Snake fights for, and his impact. Focusing so much on a character besides Snake creates a more tangible world that we can believe in.
I don't understand what people hated about Raiden. okay, it's probably because MGS2 was my first MGS, so it was basically my "first mission", so Raiden was a perfect character for me. Had long blond hair myself back then, but my hair was even longer. More like Liquids xD.

It sure didn't bother me at all. @cammyplayer and MetalBlossom606 I like Raiden in MGS2 but I prefer the Cyber Ninja Raiden in 4 and I especially like the Raiden/Rose ending in 4 where they renew their relationship in 4 and Raiden says that he is done running.
@nonamexg18 However if you were "let down" by not being able to play as Snake, were counting on eventually playing as Snake in the future, or could not get past the physical design of Raiden (he's androgynous and everyone complined how come I never hear the same amount of hate for like every Final Fantasy/ Square Enix leading dude) then there was no way anyone even Kojima himself could convince you that Raiden was good enough to lead his own game (which Kojima has tried).

I love that conversation between Jack and Rose about which building King Gong climbed up in the movie. One of my favorite MGS moments
