The young War Doctor is ordered to assassinate a rogue Time Lord in a three-part full-cast audio adventure, He Who Fights With Monsters, from Big Finish Productions.
Jonathon Carley returns as the 'secret' incarnation of the Doctor - originally played on screen by the late John Hurt - in the fourth volume chronicling his anguished origin story.
The brilliantly-crafted character piece finds the War Doctor hunting a corrupted Time Lord, the Barber Surgeon, played by Laurence Olivier Award-nominee Nicholas Le Prevost.
The Doctor is no more. A warrior has joined the Time War between the Daleks and Gallifrey. But how far will he go? What lines will he cross? How much of himself will he sacrifice?

The Mission
As the Time War takes a dark new turn, the War Doctor is tasked by the Time War Council with locating and assassinating a Gallifreyan renegade waging their own private campaign against both the Daleks and the Time Lords. Who is the mysterious Barber Surgeon, and can the Doctor
complete his mission without becoming all that he abhors?
The Abyss
The Doctor journeys towards his target through the ravages of the Time War, the trail leading him back into his own personal history. With the Daleks close behind and the mysterious Barber-Surgeon anticipating his every move, he comes to suspect that this is one mission he won't be
coming back from.
The Horror
The Doctor is missing in action. As Gallifrey and Skaro face total destruction, Time Lord and Dalek forces converge on the realm of the Barber-Surgeon. From his junkyard fortress in a lost dimension, the renegade warmonger is about to create his ultimate weapon... Who or what can possibly stop him?
Jonathon Carley said: “What tips the War Doctor over the edge into accepting this mission is curiosity, which has in many cases been the Doctor’s downfall. He wants to get to the bottom of who the Barber Surgeon is and if he can be stopped. He doesn’t trust anybody else to do it
and if he falls into the wrong hands, it could mean catastrophe. At this point, what has he got to lose?

Seeing the Dalek Time Strategist animated into official Doctor Who media gives me hope that we'll see this beautifully designed yet vile fiend in the show someday
This trailer feels like an actual TV episode, from the War Doctor's TARDIS interior and time vortex to the Spider Daleks on Gallifrey. I LOVE IT!
Fun fact; those spider Daleks are known as the Skaro Degradations, mentioned by Ten in the last of his series
I wish these multimedia stories got an animated adaptation.

I think they’re called that because they’re mutations, both of the shell, and most likely of the creature inside

Just outstanding! It's a crying shame that there isn't funding to animate an entire Big Finish boxset in this way. It would be tremendously popular on a streaming service ...
When the main show takes an break, animating the big finish stories should happen. There are some great stories but the audio fanbase is limited

If they animated Big Finish I think they would make gangbusters. Disney and Sony get on it.
Audio barely manages to capture any of the madness of what the Time War was proposed to be by RTD, making a TV series out of it is suicide because there’s no way we can get the proper scope and inherent incomprehensibility and make sensible satisfying stories that a casual audience could conceivably follow along and enjoy
@Michael Puglisi personally I've always thought a game set in the dw universe like a 3rd person shooter where you play as a timelord soldier during the time war might be the best way to interpret it. But there aren't any good doctor who games so idk which studio would be willing to take on the IP
With what they've been promising about Whoniverse spin-offs, that would be a no-brainer. I don't think I'd trust it to anyone to head it but RTD or Moffat.

Fantastic to see Spider Daleks in action! And Jonathon Carley is a great War Doctor, he's reminiscent of John Hurt but adds his own take to the performance. Looking forward to listening to this!

@@cousinmonachpsis5707 as far as this particular dalek, its just a regular dalek, but since its been brought up:
the time controller starts out as post-time war, created to assist the dalek paradigm, but acting under the title "dalek litigator". the master audio series heavily implies this by having him known only as the litigator, but mentioning multiple times having read the timelines of the current event as well as reporting to the dalek parliament.
the next time you see the "litigator" is Patient Zero, where hes acting under the time controller title, and from that point onward his chronology is pre-time war
It is! His inner dalek squid thing is exposed so i'd assume once he was rescued they had to remove the top half since that seems to have sustained the most damage and was likely irreparable since it's kinda just hanging off
To this day, it's still sad to think that John Hurt passed away. RIP to a legend. However I'm sure he would be pleased with how well Jonathon Carley did in his role as the war doctor. Can't wait to listen to this adventure. Also, those spider daleks are freaky!!!

I just bought the first war doctor begins audio drama just coincidence that I found this and I cannot wait to give it a go and Jonathan Carley does a wonderful impression of John Hurt I'm very excited.

I was wondering if that was Caan then I was wondering if even that specific (seemingly dying) Dalek knew that the Warrior (War Doctor) doesn’t go by the name The Doctor…
hence the Dalek seeing “Beyond the Storm”…seeing HIM…seeing DEATH…instead of referring to him as the Doctor…
of course in Day of the Doctor the Daleks on Gallifrey only knew him by the name The Doctor…so maybe it was somehow Caan in the commercial…
As great as these Big Finish audios are I can't help but wish they would go into animation as the clips they make to promote future releases are absolutely stunning. Just brilliant to watch.

I myself was never fond of the Two EDA Dalek novels and was much more fond of the Daleks depiction in DWM. I myself however loved the War arc in the EDA’s and find the Enemy a far greater threat to the Great Houses/ Time Lords than the Daleks could ever be (and thanks to A Prelude to a Prelude and Dead Romance we know that the Daleks where on the Great Houses side in the War in Heaven)
I do know what you mean. But at the time in the wilderness years it was new material. And the mention of new Dalek variants was great for me. Striders, Marine and of course Spiders.

The Time War could be covered in a video game format. The Daleks could reclaim their throne as true monsters and be treated as borderline monsters in the game as you fight hordes of them. The Doctor and the Master could be playable characters. A multiplayer with Time-Lord skins could be available. Rassilon and Davros could be boss fights in different campaigns, Rassilon himself could be a playable character. Maybe a Dalek campaign against the Time-Lords could be available since it is clear that the Daleks almost won the war if not for the Moment.
That would be pretty sick tbh.

Glad to finally see this variant of Dalek visually. the tripod-esque ones, I mean. I read about its design in "Doctor Who: Dalek: The Astounding Untold History of the Greatest Enemies of the Universe". But the Time Controller is something else.
It's SO brilliant to see (or hear) the classic Spider Daleks again!

Back in the 90's when the Paul McGann series had planned to give us Spider Daleks, we all thought it was a shit idea. But I always liked it.

Briggs seems to keep changing the voice.
Given this is earlier in the war, makes sense he might sound a little different

Sort of a John Hurt meets René Auberjonois vibe going on with the doctor’s voice, somehow, I envision him wearing a ww2 helmet, and clenching a cigar in his mouth.
Finally made those spider daleks that almost happened in a movie once upon the late 90s
The only person where I can watch/listen and believe this is actually the real actor. Makes me more interested and invested. It’s so off putting when actors don’t sound like the person they’re meant to be impersonating.

This is going to be awesome but its a shame we will never get to hear John Hurt play this role he was the perfect war doctor, God rest his soul.
If you haven't heard of Nicholas Le Prevost before, see if you can find the Radio 4 series HR with him and Jonathan Pryce in. It's excellent.

Dr. who as an animated cartoon would be pretty cool if they wanted to cover the war ark. realistically it's also the only way to do it on a reasonable budget.
