- Scotland’s First Minister has insisted he is “very proud” of new hate crimes laws which have just come into force, as author JK Rowling warned the legislation is “wide open to abuse”.
The Harry Potter author, who has become a fierce critic of the Scottish Government’s stance on transgender rights, has been one of the highest profile critics of the legislation.
The Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act came into effect on Monday, consolidating existing hate crime legislation and creating a new offence of stirring up hatred against protected characteristics.
However, women have not been given protection under the law, with the Scottish Government instead promising to bring forward legislation to tackle misogyny.
Backing JK Rowling, Julia Hartley-Brewer challenges Police Scotland to arrest her for refusing to state something "I know to be untrue".
"I tweeted yesterday, trans women are not women, trans women are men, arrest me," she adds.

Maybe they do. Anyway, whatever they want, they should be sent to a male prison. If they are not sent to a male prison, why is that? Surely, if they claim to be a man they should be sent to a prison where all the other men are sent. And given that there are now 57 (and counting) different genders, should we not have 57 different varieties of prison? Being taken in by the police for questioning would take on a whole new meaning (LGBTQ).

That's an interesting question - I've thought about that myself. I fear we're creating a new class of prisoner, the 'political' type, just like in the Soviet Gulag. They won't be classed as political, not at first, but in effect that's what they'll really be, because they're in prison not for anything they've done, but for what they believe.
