  • I decided to remove my leaking windscreen and begin tackling the rust! Many would say its time to throw in the towel and scrap the van... The problem is, they just don't make vans like they used to.
    Hope you find this video useful and it gives you some motivation. I'm not a professional by any means, just keen to give things a go. Thanks for watching.
    Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed the video and stay tuned for part 2 to see how this job turns out.

    It’s nice to see a young lad doing all his repairs and moreover his preventative treatment; it’s even more impressive to see you apply ‘old-school’ techniques, tips and tricks. I’ve worked on cars since the age of 16 (I’m now 58) and I’m sure you will be working on cars still well into your later years. Well done, good work ole chap.

    I'm glad you don't listen to people who would say scrap this van. I like that these vans are simple compared to the very computerised vans of today. You tackled a huge job and I take my hat off to you.

      Thanks mate, I try my best to keep on top of the rust as I think she’s worth saving. It’s got more character than any modern van of today in my opinion 👍🏼

    I've got the same problem on my mark4. Just don't have the skills or money to get it done. She is solid underneath just needs a few bits done around it. Love the channel and the way you do your videos. You have a fantastic way of explaining things simply and easily. Keep up the good work!

      Get yourself a welder when you have the funds mate. I hadn’t done much welding before getting the van and It’s taught me to weld. Although I would like to get away from gasless mig soon as I think this will help make my welding better 👍🏼 thank you for your kind words and for supporting the channel. I really appreciate it 😊

    little trick i did with all my mk5 transits....lengthen the gearstick by 75mm...cut a piece of 16mm bar at 75mm...take the gear stick off and cut it just below the tapered part ...champher both ends and weld the 75mm piece in....grind the welds smooth...quick spray of black paint and put it back together...welded piece of steel bar is hidden inside gear knob...makes for much more comfortable driving...ie not leaning forward for first ,third and fifth...see what you think...

    Wow man your braver than me what a job. So that's why there aren't so many mk5 about. The body on these fords are crap but the engine and running gear will out last everything. Good to see someone who cares about his van so much. Nice job mate keep up the good work 👊🏻👍p.s the bonnet bra suits it mate😃

      bear in mind this van is 25yrs old I have seen many sprinters just a few years old totally rotten.
      I really do not think the mk5 transits were that bad for corrosion and actually they are still quite a common site on our roads and if you go to eastern Europe they are still everywhere.

      Cheers man, they do tend to suffer from rust but not as badly as the newer ones so I’m told 🤔 I think it’s worth keep repairing it, the longer I have owned it the more I’ve become attached to it. I hadn’t put the bonnet bra on it since the new colour but I think it looks quite nice too actually 👍🏼😁 thanks for your comment mate

    you're a brave man....when I saw what you intended to do my heart sank....not sure if I'd have the mojo to tackle that job on mine now. I;ve had the same problems with water ingress on my 95 LWB you might find something of interest in a couple of my vids where I explore the causes and a simple remedy

      @@TurnersWorkshop97 ...yes! ..... completely stops the water that comes off of the roof gutter and windscreen from entering the step area. I had to silicon the windscreen rubber to the A post to stop water getting under the rubber seal and travelling down the A post into the scuttle and floor area . You'll have got that particular water ingress sorted now when you re-seal the windscreen ....great job by the way...I subscribe and follow your channel

    Luckily my Mk5 isn't leaking but 2 weeks ago on my way to North Wales in that violent storm my side rubber started flapping about as half of it had come loose in horizontal rain, I pulled into the lay-by & all I'd got to repair it was a pot of super glue & in my rush to fix it the whole pot spilt out as the top came off FFS 😂
    I managed to firm it down tightly & continue my tour of Wales journey, it wasn't till I woke up the next morning & in the sunshine looked like I'd been attacked by a 1000 seagull's as the dried glue was everywhere & looked like bird shit that had set solid😂😂 on the windscreen,the mirror & all over the wing.
    I've been wet n drying all week & it's still visible 🤣

      @TurnersWorkshop97  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man lol 😂 sounds like a right nightmare 😅 I wonder how that strip is stuck in from factory as it doesn’t seem to stay in the channel. What’s your secret for a leak free mk5?!

    • @highmilitiagilligilliatt2508
      @highmilitiagilligilliatt2508 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TurnersWorkshop97 your not wrong with the nightmare as I nearly turned around and went back home 😂 the previous owner has put loads of black windscreen sealant all around the glass but the side rubber seal was deteriated but still water tight, the wider top seal was looking faded so I purchased one off eBay last winter but never got around to fitting it but after seeing what yours has revealed I'm dreading it now😂
      It's a case of if it ain't broke don't fix it but some how I don't think I'll get away with a bucket of super glue lasting through this winter.
      Keep up the good work my friend as us smiley owners don't mind someone walking the plank & diving in first to show us all how it's done👍 keep smiling bro👍
