I was a Blind Guardian fan for almost a decade before I ever saw a picture of them. I only knew them by sound and album covers. A Night at the Opera had such a mythic quality to me. It felt like something from ancient times that had somehow been transported into the modern world. It's utterly surreal to hear these guys talk about it so candidly all these years later. My brain is melted to know there was 20+ minutes of material for our beloved Trojan epic that got whittled down to the album cut. The song is 14 minutes of perfection and I've never thought it should be even one bar shorter or longer... but now I'm insanely curious what those other puzzle pieces sounded like. Were any of them used in later songs? The imagination runs wild! That question about the album being overproduced hurt my soul, but Hansi handled it with such class! Divinely Produced is more like it! If you listen to And Then There Was Silence on the beach at magic hour, you can hear the ghosts of Troy join in the choir.
They always say that they never take back the things they take aside.... So many more songs and pieces that don't sound good in that moment but will never have their own moment to shine... it's a real pity
Probably the most overlooked album from BG. It is a MASTERPIECE and even, maybe, their best work ever. Also, it has such an important meaning to me, specially ATTWS. Reminds me of my favorite person and the best time I've had with someone. Such a beautiful song.
Did you make love to a woman to this song? The first time I ever heard it, I was on shrooms in the backseat of a friend's car as we flew down the highway to a rennaisance fair. Been a huge fan ever since, even got to meet the band last time I saw them live. Great guys.
And Then There Was Silence was the first Blind Guardian song I ever heard, and this was the first of their albums I ever bought.
It just came out on limited edition vinyl! Anxiously awaiting my copies to arrive. One is a gift. I also own the first pressing.
