      Yes but his point is that the car will overtake, stop at the lights, and then he will catch up and go to the front anyway so the car gets nowhere.
      It's not advocating for cyclists to go through red lights (though many clearly do).

      Exactly, cyclists never stop at traffic lights - when motorists do. A few years ago, in London, a cyclist nearly collided with me at a pelican crossing when cars, taxis and lorries had stopped. I am young and fit, that could have been a pensioner he hit and injured. I looked, cars stopped and he appeared out of nowhere. He started giving me verbal abuse.
      I called him a c*nt and shouted, 'PEDESTRIAN RIGHT OF WAY!
      THEY STOP! (the motorists) YOU STOP!'
      This was near Malet Street and this jerk was a student.
      Incidents like this have happened to me more than once.
      When I called him a C-U-Next-Tuesday, he stopped and looked at me and said, "WHAT?"
      As if I had no right, and was a "Div"- his word - for being in his way.

    I grew up in inner London and as a child it was never considered possible for you to cycle in the city. It was accepted as not safe because of the combination of buses, lorries and cars. A limited number of adults did cycle but it was not advised in general. I know now with cycle lanes and other systems the roads have been adapted but it is still an environment where you have to look out for your own safety. You may believe you have rights as a cyclist and that this obligates others to consider your needs at all times, but you cannot rely on it. Pedestrians also have rights but that does not mean you would step out to cross a road without looking and using your judgement at all times.

      Per mile travelled, cycling and walking have similar accident statistics. Roguhly 1 fatal accident per 30 million miles. This is about 15 times higher than as a car passenger, but is still a very low risk. Much lower than for a motorbike rider. Clearly, a pedestrian, cyclist or driver that takes risks is more likely to be involved in an accident. Most cyclists willride defensively and assume that drivers are likely to make mistakes and make allowances for this. Nevertheless a cyclist will get annoyed when a driver doesn't give them the space they are entitled too.

    • @starbase218
      @starbase218 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but it’s really not comparable. There are pavements in most places. So pedestrians already have their own space on the road, and cars do not come there. Neither are pedestrians sometimes required to take of their shoes, while the “cyclists dismount” sign is pretty well known.

    "they are going to stop at the next lights, so he can't beat me" by that admission I assume the highway code only applies to motor vehicles at red lights and not cyclists. Oh yeah I forgot, that's what the pavements for, so cyclists can miss out red lights and cycle through pedestrians. Not against cyclists just the hypocrisy of it all..... And I think Jeremy vile is a horrible person.

    • @karikling8812
      @karikling8812 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are three options here. The car beats him, he beats the car, or they're tied. Since they'd both be stopped at a light, they'd be at exactly the same point. Now, of course the motorist will overtake him right away when the light turns green, but when cyclists talk about being overtaken right before a light, the point they are making is the driver isn't saving any time by not waiting until after the light turns green to pass them.

    • @stephenbrookes7268
      @stephenbrookes7268 ปีที่แล้ว

      Russ! I think your lack of functional literacy is being displayed. Which also might be why you don't understand the Highway Code.
      When someone says that you can't beat them because of traffic lights, it means no matter how fast you drive between the lights, you will have to stop and wait. I know it is impossible for you to not be stupid, that was how you were born. We understand. Whenever you try to read something in future, ask a grown up, like your mummy or care worker, to explain what any complcated sentences mean.

      @@karikling8812 A cyclist can also filter through a long queue at a traffic light and so may catch up drivers stuck in the queue for several minutes. On many busy urban roads, a driver is only actually moving for perhaps half the time and spends the other half waiting in a queue. The cyclist will travel at about half the speed between queues, but will usually filter through to the head of the queue and hence is never delayed by more than the time taken for one cycle of the lights. I find that travel times over 4-5 miles of most urban roads is the same whether I'm driving or cycling

      Cyclists are absolute bellends. Only takes a few of these headcam videos to see the majority of cyclists would happily break the law ( running red lights, not stopping at pedestrian crossings etc) just to chase cars that make a mistake and send the clip into the police for a tiny bit of gratification in their pathetic existences.

  • @steve5825
    @steve5825 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Anyone and everyone who uses any type of vehicle on the road should have to have insurance. Why do I have to have insurance for a motorcycle but not a push bike? If a cyclist collides with me or my car and causes damage how do I get the injury or expense and inconvenience recompensed? The majority of cyclists (the Lycra clad brigade especially) seem to have a holier than thou, elitist attitude to road use, ignore the Highway Code and are generally a right pain in the rear. Pay up or pedal somewhere else. As for Jeremy Vile.... best left unsaid.

    • @steve5825
      @steve5825 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@picaso023 why is wanting anyone who uses the road to have insurance spiteful? Should a kid on a 50cc moped that is restricted to 28mph be exempt from having insurance? You think that building a network of cycle lanes is the solution and would it then be ok to tax them (no mention of insurance whereas I never mentioned taxing them)? But you seem fine with cyclists using the road totally uninsured. How about making them take a test? The biggest danger to cyclists in my experience of them is their own stupidity and disregard for the rules of the road. But no worries let everyone else look out for their idiotic antics.

    • @steve5825
      @steve5825 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@picaso023 what ever medication you are on you need to reduce the dose. I need to do my home work do I? I never mentioned electric bikes anywhere. I never mentioned motorcycles anywhere or 40mph anywhere. So I'll explain it carefully to you one more time.
      A kid (16yrs old) on a scooter/moped (50cc restricted to 28mph) has to have insurance to use the road. Yet the lycra clad 'entitled' cyclists do not have to have insurance (I'm guessing you are one yourself) so - now pay attention - why shouldn't a push bike also have insurance if a puny moped has to have insurance to use the road? If one of your play mates collides with a vehicle and then cycles off the unfortunate person who's vehicle is damaged has to foot the bill for repairs themselves. The selective use of the Highway code by cyclists is appalling.
      So I don't need to do my homework as I'm a motorcycle instructor teaching people how to avoid such idiots everyday, they ones like you wanting cycle lanes but then don't use them, want us to pass slow and wide but are quite happy to nearly take my mirrors off when coming towards me two abreast. So perhaps you should do some homework, or just read comments properly or - even better read the Highway Code and abide by it instead of expecting everyone else to look out for you while you are out playing and not looking out yourself...and get some insurance, just in case.

      Pete Butt, I don’t cycle, but bikes are zero emissions like electric cars, so don’t pay road tax as you call it. Road Tax and car insurance is totally unfair way of taxing road users as I only drive an average of 5,000 miles a year, but pay the same for the privilege of using the road as someone who may drive 50,000 miles a year.

      Roger Parker road tax, which is actually Road Fund License is supposed to be for the upkeep and funding of new roads, as was its original intention. But as most people know it is a nother way of taxing motorists. It is a totally unfair system, why should there be different levels of road fund license and no matter how much you use the roads we all pay the same. It should be added to the cost of the fuel, then even the tax dodgers would be paying.

    The point is not trying to save the planet or the polar bear. The point is that cyclists want to ride a bike. It’s easy, it’s cheap, it’s healthy and you never need to look for parking space. If they are taking up more space, that’s purely out of necessity because otherwise they would be much more vulnerable. And they already are vulnerable because they don’t have, oh I don’t know, a 1000kg metal body around them? Jeremy Clarkson is even comparing it to swimming in a pool with sharks. How does he not put 2 and 2 together? The fact is the UK traffic culture favors the more protected road users, i.e. cars. Whereas it should favor the most vulnerable ones, pedestrians and cyclists. Infrastructure should be designed with this in mind as well. Then it won’t be like swimming amongst sharks, and in The Netherlands we have proven that.

    If an accident occurs involving a motorist and cyclist and the cyclist is injured, then the police are called, who check the motorists Insurance, driving licence, MOT if relevant, eyesight and breath for alcohol. No such investigation and tests are conducted on the cyclist (even if they are at fault.) Surely with so many cyclists now on our roads, particularly racing cyclists, then similar legal requirements should be in place. Brakes, steering and competences to be on our roads are just as important for cyclists as they are for motorists.
