  • www.vernissage.tv | With its distinctive flying saucer like shape Suuronen's Futuro is an icon of 1960s design. In 1965 Matti Suuronen was commissioined to design a mobile holiday home that could be erected in poorly accessible skiing areas. The Futuro is now on display for the first time after its restoration at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen as centerpiece of the exhibition Futuro - Constructing Utopia.

In 2007, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam / Netherlands came into possession of the prototype of a quite spectacular piece of architecture: Finnish architect Matti Suuronen's Futuro: house of the future.
With its distinctive flying saucer like shape Suuronen's Futuro is an icon of 1960s design. In 1965 Matti Suuronen was commissioined to design a mobile holiday home that could be erected in poorly accessible skiing areas. The Futuro is made from polyester, measures about 3 x 8 meters, and was conceived for serial production. In part due to the oil crisis of 1973 the production was halted prematurely, but there are still a dozens of Futuros spread across the world.
The Futuro is now on display for the first time after its restoration at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen as centerpiece of the exhibition Futuro -- Constructing Utopia, which also presents twenty prints and approximately a hundred design objects from the museum's collection.
On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition Futuro -- Constructing Utopia at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen VernissageTV met up with Jonieke van Es. She is Head of Collections & Research at the museum and tells us more about the history and concept of the Futuro, how the prototype came into possession of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and how it was restored, the Futuro's relevance as a design icon, and its future use at the museum.
PS: Another Futuro is being restored currently at the University of Canberra.

Increase the size and make it a double decker, two floors, and you have a very nice home - increase the feet and ladder, so it's up higher and make sure it floats, water tight, and you have a flood and fire and earth quake proof home. (making sure the 'landing gear' are struts that can safely dampen any quakes).

great idea with the landing gear. Elon Musk would add some engines too, I guess.

So cool. There's one on top of a house on Pensacola Beach, Florida. It used to be so exciting when I was a kid. My sister and I would ask our parents to drive us down there to look at the "spaceship" house. This was back in 1970. Now I know the backunusual

(What a lovely lady!) Round houses would, I'd think, all share the same problem: putting "square" furniture in 'em (dressers, etc.) would be awkward. This would, indeed, be enjoyable for what its designer intended -- but not for a permanent living space.

    • @drbarney1000

There are an estimated 18 of these left in the world. There is one in Tampa on the roof of a strip club. It gives a whole new meaning to the term "High Art."

The lady says that it is made of polyester and I got stuck at that point. I am actually here deliberately - as in I went searching for a few videos about this house because I've been reading a bunch of information about the Futuro on a dedicated fan site.
That said, everything that I have read so far has said that it is made from fiberglass. Fiberglass is sometimes embedded into resins, as far as I know. To be clear, I should be assumed to be completely ignorant on the subject just to make this easier. Assume that I know nothing and, to be frank, I don't really know much at all about this.
Now, polyester is a complex hydrocarbon, right? Is it one of the more generic terms where there's multiple types? Is it the same material that they used to make disco dancers more slick? Is it a language issue where the use in her native language is different than the usage here in the US?
I've seen the molds that were used to make the individual parts to the house and they look like the standard fiberglass molds that they use to make fiberglass boats. They didn't look special and they are pretty old, so don't think they're using some sort of high pressure injection molding or anything like that back then.
Anyone have any more information about this? How is this polyester, specifically? Given the little that I know (assume that I know nothing), it seems that polyester could be in a resin form and be the 'fiber' part of fiberglass. I am guessing that's it but I don't really know and am kind of curious.
I have read that they're rather flimsy panels but that they are stronger when they're fully assembled due to the shape and the bracing. Would that have something to do with the fiber portion being polyester? A couple of quick Google searches aren't really helping but I'm not really sure what to look for. I imagine that there are different grades and chemical changes (molecular?) that result in differing qualities of polyester but I have no idea what those would be called and what search terms would help me out.
    Meh, someone here might know.

Galen Gregory, we had a campground here in Pennsylvania that had Futuro Houses as cabins and they were made of aluminum with fiberglass cladding.
In the 1960's to the 1970's these Futuro Houses were built to customer ordered specifications making them unique inside but externally they were UFO shaped due to the space craze of the era.
The prototype in this video likely used polyester just because it's inexpensive for demostration.

Awoken light, when it was designed in the 1960's the Futuro Houses were inspired by People's fascination with space science fiction movies and mankind's interest in sending men into space.
