ASICS SUPERBLAST REVIEW - SUPER MAX CUSHIONED or SUPER RESPONSIVE TRAINER? - EDDBUD
An initial review of the new ASICS SUPERBLAST, a new model from ASICS which uses their top level midsole cushion FLYTEFOAM TURBO & FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS.
A max cushioned shoe with 49mm of stack in my uk 11 / us 12 makes for a great shoe for those longer, easier pace training runs. Some super grip on the improved outsole too.
ASICS have created quite the shoe here which has some amazing cushion for a super low weight. Though this is not an ASICS version of NIKE'S INVINCIBLE RUN by any means. Far firmer and more responsive than ZOOMX and much lighter!
This is a shoe sent to me from ASICS for review, but they are not paying me to making this video nor will they be watching my video or vetting my views before my valued viewers get to see it.
I comment on the upper, midsole and outsole after my initial runs.

Please note. Weight for the novablast 3 incorrect here. Used the wrong spreadsheet cell! It’s the same gram for gram against the Superblast!

I have been running in Brooks for years. Every so often I try another brand, but ultimately our return back to Brooks. I tried the SuperBlast and I must admit, it is by far the best running shoe I have worn in recent memory! I have moved it to the top of my rotation and I've been using it for everything! The first week in the shoe I ran 97 mi with no issue, just sheer pleasure. Thanks to Ed for his stellar work in persuading to not only think outside the box but to grab a different box all together! Ed is the only guy I listen to when it comes to reviews. He always seems to be spot on! His music. Reviews aren't bad either! I can't really compare this shoe to anything I have ever tried! It's on a whole other level.🎉

shoe of the year for 2023! as much fun as the prime x strung with more stability. Don't listen to anyone complaining about the price, they're worth it. 7/800KM easy. buy them at any price you can get them at!! Best shoe i've ever run in... by the time you wear them out you'll be a much better runner. these shoe reviewers have to stop watching other reviews they all say the same thing. BUY THIS SHOE forget different shoes for recovery and tempo long distance. the only down side is the shoe is so good version two will not be better. i went a half size up and they're perfect

    • @EDDBUD

They are insanely good. The only way they can improve it is to minimise the rock collecting outsole.

  • @nicktrueman

Agree with a lot of your initial conclusions Edd, especially for the upper which is fuss free and accommodating. I struggle with toe pain from plated shoes over long distances and had high hopes this would be my personal 'super-ish shoe'. Was initially disappointed by the stiffness in the forefoot and anything over an hour was very uncomfortable. But they've finally broken in (took 80+ miles!) and I'm absolutely loving mine now. Definitely a contender for my next marathon 👍

I love the Super Blasts, got a PR at the Eugene half marathon this last April, using it as a trainer at race pace long runs and intervals for Portland Marathon and as a partner for Metaspeed, used to be a huge Nike fan but found ASICS just work better , Nimbus 25s are faster and leave my legs better than the Invincibles and I run about as fast in SuperBlasts as in Vaporfly’s 🤔 So wanting to see how Metaspeeds do.
One reviewer did mention that ASICS missed a gr😢opportunity to name these the Super Nova.
    Again another wonderful review sir!

When I ran in the Novablast 2, I didn't feel anything outstanding that most reviews raved about. I had 20+ km in them; it became my casual walkabout shoes. I avoided the Novablast 3 as a result. I'm really curious about this Superblast and will probably get it as soon the price goes down. Thank you for the Review, Edd!

Nice review. When you talk about the outsole you mentioned it’s grippier than Novablast 3 but it’s sounds like it’s due to the texture of the outsole. Actually Superblast has AHAR+ while Novablast 3 has the regular AHAR. AHAR+ is way grippier than AHAR, that’s the main reason why Superblast has excellent grip. Only downside with the shoe is that the outsole is picking up stones (which is a big issue for me since all my long runs has at least 5-10km gravel) but it’s still my favorite shoe I’m reaching for almost every day. BTW, I have 550km in my pair and the shoes looks almost like new. Outsole looks more or less unused but most important, the foam just get better and better. Unbelievable good.

Agreed on nearly everything...price is horrendous though...one thing I noted...it promoted a bouncy loping gazelle like gait...this may cause some issue for lower to the ground cadence runners. Its the fastest non-plated shoe I have ever used though!!!! Prefering these for my 10K+ tempo runs. Feel a little cluncky at recovery speeds though if I am honest. These are perfect for my marathon training block! Planning loads of tempo work, might even use for the odd race.

Not 100% sure if it’s the Novablast 3’s or my running style (maybe a bit of both!) but I’ve started to get calf pain in my left leg with the Novablast 3’s. The roads near where I live have quite bad camber on the pavements which could be it but I never had an issue with the Novablast 2’s. Thinking of getting the Superblast or maybe the new Kayano. Will still use the Novablast 3’s but not every day like a I am at the moment.

I’m so glad they didn’t make it mushy like the Zoom X. It rebounds much faster making it a good tempo shoe as well. It definitely takes care of your feet and legs. I ran a 6 mile tempo repeats in it yesterday, no soreness the day after. Also my keeps my HR low. It can handle recovery paces too. It doesn’t feel unstable. Overall the price is justified IMO because it can do so much.

Hi Edd, aspiring shoetuber here. Long time listener/watcher. Found you around Novablast 1/Reebok floatride days. I believe Reebok was the first company to start sending you shoes for review. Alternating between novablast nimbus and superblast, superblast works best for faster sessions for me. Nimbus does easy recovery runs the best even with more weight. Novablast just does everything in between. All three work the best when used together. Asics has a really great lineup currently. Nice to see you enjoying these

I even bought another pair box fresh put away in case I decide to use for my Autumn marathon. Superblast or Adiós Pro 3 both (new) waiting for me to decide. At 58 year old currently thinking it could be Superblast to help my old bones around 26.2!

Just retired my NB3 yesterday with 315 miles. Been running easy runs in my SB for the last 2 weeks, and honestly I love the shoe more now than ever with 176 miles on them. It can do easy 10 min mile pace and not feel like it's not the right shoe, or I can run down in mid 7's and it feels great at that speed also. I find I like a midsole that does not squish a lot like ZoomX foam, this is pretty firm and rebounds energy well. Also against the OG Prime X, I like the SB a lot more, it's none carbon, lighter, and even though it's almost as tall as the Prime X, to me I feel I sit low do the ground and it's very stable ride in comparison. Also here in the US, military discount goes a long way, when I got mine I got 40% off at the time at full price so $120 USD (not including tax) shipped. I did half size down and the fit is great, plenty of room in the toe box. I would also buy the superblast again before I got a new pair of novablast, they just work better for me.

Another great review! It is a nice shoe, because of that crazy stack height! (the forefoot is thicker than the alphaflys heel foam! ) But the thing is dont like about asics is that they put the price sky-high. so I might stick to the pegusus! (but dont get me wrong... it still looks like a incredible shoe)

Spot on review from my perspective as well. I struggle to get a good lockdown or I seem to get them too tight and it bites into the top of my foot. I almost wish I’d gone 1/2 size down because my foot seems to swim around a bit if I don’t cinch them tight.
For those that like a bit more squish, I have put an ortholite sock liner in mine and it gives it a better long run feel and since it is a pretty light shoe, the extra few grams from the thicker sock liner isn’t noticeable at all.

Great shoe. Have done 200km in mine. As versatile as the Endorphin Speed but they've been much kinder to my feet than the ES3. Easy runs, long runs, workouts - I'd also run a marathon in them. Pretty good value if you want a do it all shoe. One point I would add is that unlike a few competitors (Prime X, SC Trainer) there's no plate, but the shoe is still super stiff. Possibly the best of both worlds?

That thing is just laughably ridiculous.

I’ve been enjoying my Superblasts quite a bit but that outsole does have a ferocious appetite for twigs and pebbles.
I didn’t totally get the point of this shoe when it came out, but now I find myself grabbing them for most of my runs, especially now that they’ve broken in nicely after 90ish miles.
The Adios Pro 3s are still coming out for races, but these have taken over a lot of my Prime X’s duties.

    • @davidgunther1282

@@rocapeinado They are firmer and provide more "spring" when you pick up the pace. As for them being more "comfyer," I suppose that depends on what your definition of that is. Are they softer and feel squishier like a pillow? No. Do they give you more "spring" or is it easier to run fast in them than the NB3? Yes. So like....comfy as in soft, squishy, no, but comfy as in easier to run faster for longer, yes. That might not make much sense reading it but if you try a pair of SB out you'll see what I'm talking about.

I have run 100K in the Superblast shoes and so far it does not work for me. They give me too much hit to the heel, they might be too stable for me - forcing me into a single running form that gives me pains. I love the Prime X for high speeds, they are unstable but I like to balance myself. For slower paces Prime X is terrible, so I hoped Superblast could be a Zone 1 & 2 alternative. I do have Hallux Rigidus so I need stiff soles. I have run in the Superblast several times and the only time they worked with any pain was running uphill and slowly down again. Else I have experienced pain in the toe, Fermoris and knees. I will try them again trying to run with a longer stride.

I wish this were not a unisex shoe. I’m so light and petite (101 lbs, 5’ 3”) even the NovaBlast 3 feels pretty chonky on me; this one unfortunately doesn’t lock down well enough so my feet feel like they’re swimming in them. I’ve tried them on twice and admired the bounciness, but never felt locked in enough in them to purchase (those skinny laces…?) I wonder if ASICS will make them gender-specific in the future since they’ve been so successful. I have no lockdown issues in my Edge+ . My other issue is that I would be getting the SuperBlast for long slow runs and I have a naturally very high cadence (188 and up) so probably just not a good option for me after hearing you say they work better with a long stride!

    • @EDDBUD

Shouldn’t a bigger shoe at least have the better lacing of its smaller sibling?
