One tip that I use, I use the blue tape where I intend to pin. The pin drives into the blue tape and trim. Then I use the filler and remove the tape. The hole is fixed.

Many times there is a 1/2" gap in the drywall at the bottom. I usually have a bunch of 1/2" thick spacers and place a few along to keep the baseboard from trying to kick in.

I have never found studs and never had problems.
