@David Simms the funny thing is, the Ecto 1 being slower and more sluggish with bad handling is a part of the charm that makes it more desirable than a Lamborghini to me. I don't need to go fast; I want to slow down and relax and be imperfect.
No competition, ecto would blow away even a Bugatti. Now get Ecto and the BTTF DeLorean together and tell people they can only get to see one - that would be interesting to see which ends up being more iconic....
Ecto 1 wasn't a prop. Ecto 1 was a character in the movie much like the DMC DeLorean was a character in "Back to the Future" or the Ford Interceptor in "Mad Max"
The biggest thing I love about Dan is he created a backstory for the mechanics and tech even to the smallest details it brings a believability and plausibility to the science of ghostbusting
I saw Ghostbusters in its theatrical debut. My grandmother took my sister and I, and she really didn't want us to go see this. I still remember the conversation well. But we did. It was a very funny movie then and still to this day. Grandma is long gone, died in 1987. Great memories of good times.
Tig Trager just doing what every grandma would do. Tell’s you why you really shouldn’t, but then let’s you do it anyway😂😂 It’s a different kind of love only a grandma can give❤️

I though the same thing when I saw the video about the restoration of the Back to the Future Delorean. It was almost stripped bare of all parts and just so dirty. From the bottom of the heart of a life-long Ghostbusters fan: thank you. Thanks to all of you who put so much hard work, professionalism, dedication, love and also respect into restoring one of the greatest cars in movie history. You deserve every jota of gratitude there is.
Great to see it fully restored, my friend who at the time run his own Motorcycle shop in Belfast told me how one day he was working at his stock computer in reception when he became aware of a guy entering the shop and approaching the desk, he looked up and it was Bill Murray who had popped in for a look, he was shell shocked and said Bill was really nice, all these guys made my our childhood much greater by making Ghostbusters, to this day it is still my favourite film!

They were practically giving 'em away. Jake: Well thank you, pal. The day I get outta prison, my own brother picks me up in a *police* car!" Haha. The Bluesmobile was awesome. I actually got to see it too. It was at Universal Studios in LA.
If you watch Dan Aykroyd walk into the shop, watch how he holds the guy's hand as he passes through the doorway. He does this whenever he walks into a new place. I met him once at when he was promoting his vodka at a bar I worked at. I had to hold his hand as he walked through the front door. It has to do with his belief that he is ensuring that he is not stepping into a different dimension. Odd cat, but super nice guy.
Imagine seeing Dan Aykroyd driving the Ecto-1 across your neighbourhood, you are talking on the phone and you basically freeze on place: "Hey man are you there?" "Dude, I just saw Ecto-1 driven by Dr. Stanz passing by me" "WTF? YOU KIDDING?! Dude? You still there?" -fall unconscious due to too much childhood memories being processed-
I'm from Dublin Ireland and that film and car ment so much to me as a young kid in the 80s must have seen the film a 100 time's love to see that car for real.
thanks for posting this video and restoring ecto1 it brought back so many happy memories of 1984 when I was a carefree 16 years of age and still remember me and my two friends going to watch ghostbusters at the Odeon cinema in Glasgow. great to see Dan Ackroyd and Harold ramis who is sadly no longer with us. thought bill Murray would have contributed which would have been nice as well as rick morranis Sigourney weaver and Ernie Hudson but guess they were all busy.
My favorite movie of all time. I litteraly know every word!! Its crazy how they let movie cars go. The bullett car, the General Lees, the Bandit cars, KITT,.... The list goes on of iconic movie and TV cars that are deemed worthless at the end of filming.
John, you may want to search Green Hornet's Black Beauty and the story behind that one. Not dissimilar to the great cars that were lost then found again. Dean Jefferies was the mastermind behind that car. I believe he made the Monkee mobile as well.
They don't realize how much these vehicles mean to the fans and to the shows themselves. In many cases these vehicles become as big a part of the shows as the actors, and in some cases bigger.
Maniac536 peeling decals, missing lenses, the hoses are cracked (see time is a window special feature) and various new rust spots. (Visual reference book)
That's squarely on the shoulders of Bill Murray. They'd had a script for 3 for years, but he wouldn't sign off on it due to "quality" issues, but he was happy to cash a cameo check in the reboot.
My very first car that I proudly bought my own self with no parental help (so no strings) by saving up my first after school part time Taco Bell job in 1973 at 15 when minimum wage was a whopping 1.70 per hour was my neighbor's old white 1959 Cadillac which had been sittinh for several years unused he sold me for $100! It actually started up and ran very well and I waxed and polished her up to look like new again so by the time I turned 16 and got my license I had a real cream puff of a car. Those really were beautiful beasts inside and out. Mine had a green black interior which didn't have a flaw. They had these funky, yet good, AM radios with a sort of channel finder deal. There was a button on the floorboard next to the button for headlights dimmer which made the channel slider move which was a trip. They had a laser gun looking deal mounted on the dashboard which in theory was supposed to automatically dim the headlights to oncoming traffic. It really only worked 'ok' if out in the country on a long stretch dark road and even then it was ify. It had very liberal power steering and 'drum' breaks and power windows. The engine was a Caddy 390ci V8. They were really very elegant cars on so many levels. Yes they were very big and really didn't corner too well but they were comfortable old cars and fun to drive. Kids don't have any idea today what drive-in movie theaters were about and those old BIG cars were perfect for all that!
You are correct. The siren sound from the movie is not from any commercially available manufacturer, thus the movie car had no actual siren, but with some clever PA work, a loop of the movie effect could be played. Im sure they've thought of that.
Nothing makes me happier! Not only seeing this absolutely iconic piece of movie history get painstakingly restored but even more so the joy and the love that Dan Aykroyd had seeing it, driving it, and talking about every nut and bolt on the thing. You see actors say "Oh yeah it was fun" or something like that. But to hear him talk about every detail. You can tell he was emotionally invested. And that makes me happy.
We need more guys like this! They got the two P's correct. Passion and Professionalism all on the same car and brought back a beloved Hollywood car back to life.
I am tearing up it made me so happy seeing Dan Aykroyd driving around in that car. Thank you guys so much for making it happen by all of my heart thank you❤️
It broke my heart seeing the original car in such disrepair. So happy they were able to put this project together and restore it to former glory. And of course, Dan has the entire encyclopedia of car knowledge and history in his head, so you don't want to mess up in front of him.
Ghostbuster:Afterlife..Me want now!!!!! Lookin damn good, got the freakin goosebumps watching ECTO-1 being driven out of the barn and the girl shooting the Proton pack while that beautiful sound of a siren is blaring. And that gunner seat... nerdgasm!!!
@8:14 South Africa is the home country of the family that started Belron...one of the largest auto glass providers in the world. not a huge surprise there.
@westplus1 no one has to pay Akroyd to do this; he's a part owner (a controlling share? No, thats why the all female cast debacle) of the GB franchise. But yes; he's no Leno in regards to cars. New remake will be awesome.
Great video! Love seeing Dan Aykroyd sitting in the back of Echto 1 watching DVD of Ghostbusters and reminiscing! Also happy to see Hollywood finally recognizing how important these Iconic cars were to the industry they're just like one of the Actors in the movie. Instead of letting them rot on some outdoor parking lot! They have always treated Iconic movie vehicles like this. Examples; The Bat Mobile, The Munster Coffin car, Back to the Future DeLorean and many more. This should have been done long ago and put in a Cinema Museum.
I hope you are referring to the NEW Ghostbusters movie! I did not even bother wasting my time and money to go see that garbage! The original from when I was a teen was the BEST EVER! Someplace around here I still have the Orig. T shirt. I have a picture of ecto-1 that I took at Universal Studios in Orlando Fl. But I think it was a replica. The only thing I noticed different is the side lights on the roof were red not blue like in the movie. That is the only thing that gave it away! Every time someone reboots a classic movie it they tarnish the name. Not to mention I HATE ROSIE ODONNAL so it was an AUTOMATIC deal breaker for me!
Let me clarify..... The all female version. It sucked. Not cause it was all female, it just sucked. The 2 original movies were awesome. I just hate that Bill Murray fucked us out of a #3.
Yep and there was a hidden hint ;) Dan Akroyd and the mechanic said it would be hard to build those things without Sprenglers Blueprints. And what do we get in the trailer? Yep, somebody is building the Protonpack.
@@NetherViking I have a feeling this new movie is going to be as awesome as the first two were. As long as you've got people like Dan Aykroyd involved in the project, it's going to be in the same spirit. (lol Pun, was intended :p)
So sad to see the condition Ecto 1 was in before the refurbishment. Looks so beautiful and original now. Too bad they didn't put the siren on during this filming, unless the mechanics weren't able to do anything for the siren. I can still remember when I was in grammar school, once the final bell rang and it was time to go home, I couldn't wait to get home to put my school stuff away before changing and then hopping on the sofa to turn the TV on to watch the Ghostbusters cartoon on Fox. I loved watching Slimer grab the burger from Winston right after Winston ran to grab his gear. And then Slimer going down the pole before kissing Janine and grabbing onto Ecto 1. I loved the way Janine would answer the phone.
I know they won't see it, but to Sam and his crew, thanks for restoring history with love and attention. It's appreciated. That car and movie are engrained in some our psyche because we watched it growing up.
My dad bought a 1959 Cadillac hearse in the early 1970's. We loved that car. It had flip-up seats in the back on one side, I guess for when you only had one coffin in the back. The rollers for the coffins were fantastic for packing up fishing and camping gear. I wish we had kept it.
... and K.I.T.T. =) Never was a fan of General Lee. That was just another dopey muscle car to me. But K.I.T.T.... K.I.T.T. was cool (and I _loved_ William Daniels' voice acting in the role).
Duh. You are comparing apples and oranges, different classes of vehicles. Mystery Machine would be more like other vehicles with unique paint schemes used for transportation like the A-Team van, the semi with the stage coach mural from Smokey and the Bandit, and maybe Dukes of Hazard type vehicles. While Ecto would be more like vehicles with gadgets, electronics, lights, etc... like the Delorean time machine from Back to the Future or KITT from Night Rider.
GB is my favorite movie. So good to see Ecto 1 restored and being driven. I can just imagine some rookie cop ticketing Dan for an improper plate. Once he got back to the station he would know what it was to be roasted in the depths of a Sloar that day, I can tell you!
not gonna lie.. man tears might have shown when it turned up at the start all mangled up.. and then another tear might have shed when it was refurbished.
My first introduction to Ghostbusters was the cartoon (I was born in 82). So when I got to see the film shortly after, as much as I was excited to see the actual guys who played Peter, Ray, Egon etc. The bit I looked forward to the most was seeing Ecto 1. That car is my favourite thing about Ghostbusters. Same goes for when I first saw Batman (1989). Everyone was excited to see Michael Keaton as The Dark Knight, but I was more interested in seeing when the Batmobile showed up.
Already 11 years have passed since, but I really loved this video montage. I do not understand those who did not like, yet Ghostbusters is one of our greatest memories of the global cinema of all time. I loved seeing Dan Aykroyd again, this talented artist - which I have always loved of course. 😃 I just saw the ECTO-1 at an exhibition (outdoor) on the edge of Quebec City. I took several pictures and I even made a small montage of the memory with my daughter, but also in honor of this wonderful little adventure 👍
Why didn't Dan Aykroyd suit up in the GB outfit of Ray Stantz for this??? I still haven't seen the new/latest GhostBusters movie... I don't feel like I need to.
Some of the stuff they did turned out a bit wonky, the blue circular roof lights at the front and back are meant to go on and off, for whatever reason they're now static, the red light on the roof (Propello Ray) also appears to be static now, in the movies it had a rotation effect.
In this youtube vid, only this man has the most accurate Ecto-1 and this guy used to work for the cartoon series which is awesome! th-cam.com/video/AdPlOHrVssg/w-d-xo.html
**That unit is a "Mars-Lite" that was very common in the '40's and '50's...the reflector-pan is mounted on a gimbal that 'sways slowly from side-to-side' from vehicle motion****In the mid-'80's I worked as an EMT at "American Ambulance" in Detroit and the 'Caddy' Ambulances by 'Superior Coach' were still in use! ** (they were '73 to '76 models) **The Cadillac was faster w/a vastly better ride than any of the 'cube' ambulances in common use even then, and the only reason they were still in-use is that they were 'grand-fathered' in despite not conforming to 'DOT' specs.**('American' had been in the 'ambulance business' since 1926!) (another little 'trivia bit'...the 'Westinghouse' alternator on the ambulance-conversions was rated at 900-amps at 'high-idle' setting from a dash-switch....that unit was **HUGE** and had to be re-built if it failed, since no replacements were available)**And yes, I DROVE IT many times w/full 'lights & siren', although I was generally the 'jump-seat medic' in- charge of patient care** (I still have my 'Cadillac Ambulance' tie-clasp from '86...one of my 'treasured trinkets')
Got to say, I agree, that car was more than just another car in a film............ it was the 4th Team member............ such an icon, and what a wonderful job they did bringing Ecto back to that quality. Fantastic job.
@Rob Cook Whether the pre-restored value was 10k, 20k, 50k or 100k is completely irrelevant. My point is that they transformed the car from literally a scrapper to its former movie glory in afew weeks increasing its value to potentially millions.
It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
Ghostbusters 1 & 2 were my fave 80’s movies! My early childhood! Poor Ecto 1! But they did a great job restoring it! Sexy ride! I am so glad I got to meet him! Such a gracious dude!
I was hoping for that, too. Maybe next year when they release the new film (after retconning that p.o.s. 2016 one down the toilet) we may get to see him reunited with the car for a promotional piece where he'll get to play with all the switches with the fans. Here's hoping, anyway. =)
So I'm pretty sure they took the old Ecto-1A car for this restoration. If you look at the stuff that was removed from the junk car, they were all components from 1A, then at 4:15, you can clearly see the outline of the GB2 logo on the back door. It's strange that the GB1 logo is nice and clean on the doors when we see them... Did they superimpose the GB1 logo onto the doors for this video? I'm about 98.7% certain this is the movie Ecto-1A reborn into Ecto-1.
There's a guy that lives a few miles from me here in Michigan that owns one of the originals from the movie. He won it in a contest in the 80's see it in the summer at the Woodward Dream Cruise.
I wish people would quit giving that movie so much hate. If you don't look at it as part of the main Ghostbusters timeline and instead look at it as a comedic spin-off, it isn't bad. It was a funny movie and as a fan of the original Ghostbusters movies, I like the 2016 spin on the franchise.
Back in 1994 I saw this car on display in the lobby of Sony's location in NYC during the 10 year anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film. I was able to open the rear door to peak inside. Since then, I just assumed it had been preserved somewhere. So I was shocked to see it in such poor condition in this video. Awesome job on the restoration!
So sad Harold Ramis did not live to make another G.B. movie but at least he lived long enough to see the old Ecto 1 restored R.I.P - DR.Egon

Ecto 1 wasn't a prop. Ecto 1 was a character in the movie much like the DMC DeLorean was a character in "Back to the Future" or the Ford Interceptor in "Mad Max"

I was a big fan of ghost busters a very long time ago.. I liked ecto 1 besides knight rider and the general Lee car

Can't believe they let that car go 2 shit like that! That's a crying shame. Glad they resurrected it. Should have never got that bad in the 1st place.
Josh Awesome I said the same thing. They couldn’t put it on display INSIDE or something?

He made blue brothers 2000 they have 1995 Ford crown Victoria.. In that movie

That is one magnificently beautiful enormous beast😍 Ecto 1 is mind blowing and an American icon.
Cringe 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮
Looked great, shame we didn't get to hear the siren wail.
IKR? If only he'd used the siren when he was driving it!
Pretty sure that was an effect added in post.
You are correct. The siren sound from the movie is not from any commercially available manufacturer, thus the movie car had no actual siren, but with some clever PA work, a loop of the movie effect could be played. Im sure they've thought of that.
It was added in post. It was a digital sound not a real siren.
The siren sound was made from a leopard snarl and then heavily post processed.
And that gunner seat... nerdgasm!!!
Terrific video ! Fascinating ! Ghostbusters was one of my favorite movies but I didn't realize what a larger-than-life character that ECTO-1 was!
@8:14 South Africa is the home country of the family that started Belron...one of the largest auto glass providers in the world. not a huge surprise there.
They probably custom made it.
Greatest movie of all time. period. Greatest franchise of all time. period. Most unique franchise of all time. period
If there's the full video of Dan talking about all the parts of the car, I'd want to see that.
I second that, prolly on the dvd lol
@westplus1 Spoken like someone that never made it out of mommy's basement.
@westplus1 no one has to pay Akroyd to do this; he's a part owner (a controlling share? No, thats why the all female cast debacle) of the GB franchise. But yes; he's no Leno in regards to cars. New remake will be awesome.
I would love to see Dan give a walkthrough of Ecto-1 and all it's gadgets.
The guy is a true genius, how easily he slips into character..
Awesome rebuild, however the one thing missing in all of that was...that ICONIC siren! Never got to hear it working again.
Most excellent! What a great job on one of the most famous movie cars ever! Ecto 1 lives!
Ecto-1 (Ghostbusters original)
Ecto-1A (Ghostbusters II)
Ecto-1B (Ghostbusters the video game)
Ecto -1 Ghostbusters the reboot 1984 caddie hearse
James Hamblin That one doesn't count.
That movie was an insult to the Ghostbuster name.
Great stuff man... This is history in the making preserving the memory of the GB culture! #YES!
Anyone here from the ghostbusters 3 teaser?
Yep and there was a hidden hint ;) Dan Akroyd and the mechanic said it would be hard to build those things without Sprenglers Blueprints. And what do we get in the trailer? Yep, somebody is building the Protonpack.
@@NetherViking I have a feeling this new movie is going to be as awesome as the first two were. As long as you've got people like Dan Aykroyd involved in the project, it's going to be in the same spirit. (lol Pun, was intended :p)
Can't wait to see the original ECTO-1 back in Ghostbusters 3
Blue Topaz yes it’s about time!!! I just wish Harold Ramis was still alive 😢
hell yeah!! i'm a massive GhostBusters fan!!!
Two old friends reunited, Dr. Raymond Stanz and ECTO-1
Ecto1 is one of my favorite movie cars. Its great to see it restored back to original movie magic.
Have a great day
Mark
The holy trinity of classic movie vehicles: DeLorean, KITT and Ecto 1. Good times.
Let's not forget James Bond's Aston Martin
I know they won't see it, but to Sam and his crew, thanks for restoring history with love and attention. It's appreciated. That car and movie are engrained in some our psyche because we watched it growing up.

My dad bought a 1959 Cadillac hearse in the early 1970's. We loved that car. It had flip-up seats in the back on one side, I guess for when you only had one coffin in the back. The rollers for the coffins were fantastic for packing up fishing and camping gear. I wish we had kept it.
If it had the flip up jump seat, it was probably the ambulance variant....
Ecto 1, Mach 5, and Delorean are my childhood vehicles
... and K.I.T.T. =)
Never was a fan of General Lee. That was just another dopey muscle car to me. But K.I.T.T.... K.I.T.T. was cool (and I _loved_ William Daniels' voice acting in the role).
So many thanks to the guys who rebuilt this car! My grandfather owned 32 Cadillacs in his lifetime, and to see this fully restored was really cool.
And this is why the mystery machine will never ever compare to this beautiful work of art known as Ecto 1
Swift Streak- To be fair...different playing fields altogether.
@@solrosenberg9552 Now you're speaking my language
GB is my favorite movie. So good to see Ecto 1 restored and being driven. I can just imagine some rookie cop ticketing Dan for an improper plate. Once he got back to the station he would know what it was to be roasted in the depths of a Sloar that day, I can tell you!
Ghost busters is this guy who everyone loves and then never came back.
Untill 2020... Very nervous what he looks like now
9:59 Dan's face is a kid getting to see Santa brought that huge gift he wanted on Christmas Day.
not gonna lie.. man tears might have shown when it turned up at the start all mangled up.. and then another tear might have shed when it was refurbished.
someguy onyoutube …Oh, thank God I’m not the only one. 😅
Imagine walking down the sidewalk that day and all of a sudden Dan drives by you in the Ecto1. No one would believe you.
And now its coming back in the 2020 ghostbusters!
As Ecto-1C?
@Rob Cook oh neat.
Ecto-1 is a Holy Relic!
One of the most famous, iconic cars of all time.
As a fan, I'm so happy to know the car has been restored - and hopefully now cared for properly.
Perhaps we might see the car in the new 2020 project :)
that's why the restored it ,, they have a trailer out already for 3 ,, and harold ramis son is doing it .
@@gregbanter3022 Wrong. Jason Reitman is doing it. The Original Director's son.
MrFreakUK well, the same car was in the trailer, so it might be!
The toys everything is getting re released
@@gregbanter3022 the car was restored in 2009....so this was way before GB3 for 2020 was a thing
I like so much watching American technicians fixing or restoring things. They take it so seriously!
Germans (and everybody else) do, too. Somehow, we've -all- survived the era of (fiberglass, LOL) kit-cars. xD
Now that's a car I'd like to own
SO many childhood memories there! Together with Back To The Future's car, the Ecto-1 is among the best!
The original car came from the funeral home in the town I live in
That car is from my hometown.....I'm Famous.
Cool
Easy Randy. Not every comment needs a troll.
@@cassidybb10 Sorry.
@@Randy-ry9ss you're cool bud lol. Just teasing ya. Looking forward to the new film. You?
Already 11 years have passed since, but I really loved this video montage.
I do not understand those who did not like, yet Ghostbusters is one of our greatest memories of the global cinema of all time.
I loved seeing Dan Aykroyd again, this talented artist - which I have always loved of course.
😃
I just saw the ECTO-1 at an exhibition (outdoor) on the edge of Quebec City.
Don't worry. There is a newer GB movie out on summer 2020. =D
He's too fat now.
Yeah dont. It was awful
Nobody needs to, its utterly disgraceful
3 is garbage and merely a cash cow from Sony. They tried to milk a Fandom and it failed hilariously.
Ghostbusters is one of my favourite movies, I’m so happy about what you have done

They did the best they could; after all, the poor thing was so rotted, it was totally ready for the junkyard!
Got to say, I agree, that car was more than just another car in a film............ it was the 4th Team member............ such an icon, and what a wonderful job they did bringing Ecto back to that quality. Fantastic job.
That car literally went from $10k to $1mil + in a few weeks.
I agree. You know how many collectors probably were bidding on that ? lol
The most dated thing on that car is the early/mid 2000's audio video Sony explode stuff
The game came out mid-2009 and I'm sure they were promoting the hell out of it way before that.
Sony XPLOD products still kick the ass out of anything today. It's a very competent audio system, same with Rockford Fosgate back in the early 90s.
Ecto 1 is an iconic vehicle, job well done in restoring it.
It's a big Twinkie.
Lol
That's a big twinky
If it was yellow.
What about the Twinkie?
Ghostbusters 1 & 2 were my fave 80’s movies! My early childhood! Poor Ecto 1! But they did a great job restoring it! Sexy ride! I am so glad I got to meet him! Such a gracious dude!
Can’t wait for GB3
RIP HAROLD RAMIS
This and the A team van was my childhood.
I was waiting for the iconic, "Ray Stanz" to turn on the siren while he was driving the Ecto 1, a little bummed but happy nonetheless..
Let's run some red lights!
There's a guy that lives a few miles from me here in Michigan that owns one of the originals from the movie. He won it in a contest in the 80's see it in the summer at the Woodward Dream Cruise.
Can we pretend that the 2016 "Ghostbusters" movie (and I use that title very loosely) never existed?!?!?
There was no Ghostbusters movie in 2016.
Huh, what 2016 Ghostbusters movie is this guy talking about? I could Google it but I'm not going to waste my time with silly conspiracy theories.
When people ever ask me what I would do if I ever won the lottery, my first response is to have my own Ecto-1 Ghostbusters car built.
What's the difference between ecto-1 from 1984 and 2016?
2016 ecto-1 has tampons in the glove box
While 1984 will always spin donuts around 2016's sorry piece of crap
Back in 1994 I saw this car on display in the lobby of Sony's location in NYC during the 10 year anniversary of the original Ghostbusters film. I was able to open the rear door to peak inside. Since then, I just assumed it had been preserved somewhere. So I was shocked to see it in such poor condition in this video. Awesome job on the restoration!
She lives yet again 😂😂 2020 ecto 1 in the new movie
It's insane for such an iconic piece of an iconic movie - be completely ignored and left to fall apart.
That’s why the lady ghostbusters didn’t do so well. They lacked the respect of the history and the attention detail like the originals
