They measure length plus girth measurements and there's a formula to determine weight. It's very accurate, and they do the same to mount the fish, they no longer kill the fish. These guys are professional as they come. They don't need to make up stories when they catch 106 marlin a year. That's as productive as a lot of bass fisherman.
I agree a fish that battled the odds of any species, if near peak size them they deserve to live free. Only way I'd change my mind is if the meat is donated to starving villages where it could literally save people's lives.
