I sat still for several hours patiently waiting for these juvenile Lemon sharks to come closer and interact with me. When they eventually came close the slightest movement from me would scare them off. After circling me for ages they would eventually come closer and head butt me or whack me with their tails and on one occasion actually tried to test bite me to see if I was food. (I literally lost a hair follicle and that is all. It was not a successful or aggressive bite) Once they realised that I am not food or a threat they would approach closer and search for the source of the fish scent that is coming from a small piece of fish placed inside a perorated water bottle, then eventually a loose piece of fish placed directly in front of me. What is interesting is that if I picked up the bottle or the piece of fish the sharks would stay away. (In fact any movement from my arms would deter them) It was also interesting to see how much difficulty they had in pin pointing the exact location of the fish. The adult reef sharks I work with would zero in on a piece of fish instantly. As youngsters maybe they still need some practice. The reason that I am doing this is that I have not seen juvenile Lemon sharks in this area before and I really want to know them better and study them for my own personal knowledge. There are 4 individuals but only 2 or 3 come over at any one time. One has some marking/damage to the snout (The young female one that bit me) and she is my favorite. :) I could just sit here for hours watching these beautiful creatures swimming and interacting with me. I find them truly beautiful and mesmerizing. I have condensed some of the action into this clip but the reality is that most of the time they would just gently swim around me in a calm and relaxed fashion. Without the fish bait in the bottle they would simply stay away. I tried. They are very shy and hesitant creatures. This is not on a reef or in the ocean but an inland ocean hole surrounded by mangroves in a creek. I spend a lot of time with sharks so please do not attempt this yourself. Obviously I would not do this with adult lemon sharks! I am probably the first human they have seen.

They basically are just scavengers, and they don’t have the greatest eyesight. They are mainly sensing with receptors in their “nose” that can sense small electrical signals made from nerves firing, chemical changes in the water, and heat. So a lot of times they just test things with their mouth to see if it seems like food or not. Once they can feel that you’re not a chunk of fish, squid, etc they immediately back off.
So interesting watching them with you for a long period of time. They almost reminded me of cats with how curious they were

They are such beautiful animals. Cruelly mistreated by humans I think. As a child on many holidays in Cornwall I have to confess I would love to see the freshly caught sharks. But 35 or so years later and in my 40s now my viewpoint thankfully has shifted. Must be amazing to interact with this wonderful creatures.
In Iceland they eat rotten shark (I guess they call it Hakkarl) and I don't understand how can they eat that... also, shark meat by itself has a strong ammonia smell, I think I'll never eat it!

I don't believe that the shark bit you out of aggression. But more like out of curiosity. Biting is truly the only way they know how to learn and interact. From what I overheard, they generally don't like the taste of human anyways.

They're so timid and precious, I love how it seems like they're doing their very best to find the food and getting confused. I also love seeing the fish nibbling on the food when the babies aren't there haha, free meal! Absolutely beautiful sharks, I'm sure it was a super nervous encounter for them but they handled it very well. The little test bite and release seems like one of them took the initiative to find out what you were once and for all!

THIS is precisely EXACTLY what happens to human beings in New Smyrna Beach the shark bite capital of the world...mistaken identity. It's not a shark attack it's a normal ordinary practice for sharks to actually bite the food they are going to eat. Human beings are not food for them. @@jame2182 100%, Sharks aren't the monsters movies portray them as. The movies always give them an intent, like they're maliciously hunting people, but that just isn't true. Sharks are very curious and very skittish too, but they don't have hands or fingers to touch and test things out with, they just have their eyes and their mouths. And if their eyes think they see their typical prey, they're probably gonna go for it because gotta eat to survive.
Personally, I think they're beautiful creatures we never gave enough credit to. Maybe they're not as obviously clever as a dolphin or a primate, but they clearly have their own form of intelligence, especially when it comes to friendly encounters with humans. I'm pretty sure if they were mindless killing machines, the entire ocean would be red by now!!

@@sadflix8754 yes, absolutely -- I saw the show "sky sharks" on Disney, a documentary where they film beaches with drones, and was stunned by the sheer number odd sharks that would swim near people without doing anything at all. It would be as though people were literally walking casually through a tiger cage of a few dozen tigers and the tigers simply ignoring you.

You can tell the shark had no intention to hurt him as it ran away when he moved its leg, it was curious to what his leg was so he got a closer look and when he found out it was not food it swam away

@@bryanguilford5807 Hammer head is not at all aggressive towards human. There had only been 16 attacks reported up-to-date with zero death. I would be more careful with bull shark and oceanic whitetip. While there are more unprovoked attacks and fatal bites coming from great white, the fatality percentage is higher with bull shark. But then again, most death caused by shark attacks were due to blood loss rather than from the bite itself, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyone Chumming around your body... If the scent drifts on to you, you may be tested as the source of the smell. That's how they do!! Happened to my friend in Hawaii. A Galapagos shark rubbed up against her leg as a scent sample, no bite... I always figure that the fishy Spray sunblocks will attract sharks to test or bite, too.

This must be an incredible experience, they seem like such amazing animals like you said they didnt seem to bite out of aggression and more curiosity as they are young, still learning and were even cautious to come closer. This was on my recommended and im glad to watch it as it was so amazing to see.
