The limitations on the sp1200 is what makes it dope. It only has 10 seconds of sample time so you have to get creative when making beats. Its not same as making beats a computer where you have basically unlimited memory and can sample whole songs. On the sp1200 you had to speed up records or use hi speed dubbing on a cassette player to catch as much of the sample as possible to save memory. Then you had to pitch it back down to normal speed. The pitching down of the sample made the sample sound dirty and gritty but this is what the sp1200 in famous for. Most of the younger generation of beat makers these days wouldn't be able to make beats on the sp1200 because of the 10 second sample time. But as I stated earlier the limitation is what forced you to be creative. Im glad I still have mine.
+Red Planitt Productions 100% true! I came from computers and eventually got a sp. I admit i CANT make beats on it that are any good. I gotta rearrange myself complety but i love the machine!
Deep Society I started making beats at the age of 13 back in 1986. My first drum machine was a Korg DDM 100, then I got a TR 808 and TR 909 in 1987, finally I got my sp 1200 in 1988 and still got it to this very day. Beat making was very different in those days. I wasn't as very complex and I could knock out several beats a day back then. Once you ran out of memory on the sp 1200 then all you had left was to arrange what samples you managed to fit in the unit...couldn't go back had add any new sounds. Now that I use Logic 10 and Maschine along with several VST's a beat might take several hours or even days to complete. I still try to limit myself while making beats on my Mac. Check out my TH-cam video titled..Logic Pro 9 Teena Marie sample "out on a limb" by Rodney D
Yeah, and today too many seems more focused on "is it 192kzh 24bit stereo 64bit vst?" than the MUSICAL quality of what they're doing. So much earlier stuff was made with "bad sound", but it sounded glorious
North Trenton New Jersey I have Roland Mv 8000 and Akai S2000. Tell me more of these tricks that ppl like pete rock do in order to obtain that good sound.
i often come to this video for inspiration...my favorite part of the beat is in between 2:15 and 3 minutes...i love that rugged old school east swing with the New York bounce...keep at it homie
i love the gritty sp1200 sound, plus the fact that it does something to the sound if you run the whole beat to the main out.. slight compression, something .. sounds punchy, slighty lofi..awesome!
just like any other piece of gear from any era it has it´s particular sound so i wasn´t refering to any magic trick .. just the appreciation and fact that after decades it´s still holding up and relevant in my opinion.
+Ammer Reduron hell yea its the dopest sounding machine by far... I use an mv88 myself, when I process sounds I shoot for the sp12 sound, especially on my drums. been doing this for almost 15 years, if u ever wanna talk hip hop shoot me a line brother. I love this shit.
That signature noise/ring on the samples is what makes the sp1200 so fuckin dope, sp1200 + s950 is sampling magic. Why does it have to cost like 2k ?:(
i know this comment is old but also note he used the sp for drums. alot of the music if not sampled or if it was remade was live music. he could play guitar or they had i saw once some black guy playing bass i dont know what his name was. but yah alot of live instruments as well as the sp. what a great producer. also j didnt make most of pacs songs, live quad made alot of pacs good ones. theres to many producers to name. but j made alot of the famous sampled ones that were kind of more pop. especially on all eyez on me which would prob be the most famous album
+Sponge Banks he's saying the maschine software has SP1200 emulation and MPC emulation so you can get pretty close to the sound of actually using this equipment.
very cool and just shows you how much very little can make a very cool tune, simplicity and nice melody and harmony.....done.....no need for over the top clever shit...nice...cheers
Yo Pay attention To the sp1200 tricks he does like assigning a blank sound to same channel to use buttons as a mute. if you dont understand. then move on....
I'm on the new school stuff (maschine), but I have so much respect for this! SP1200 even made it's way into maschine, but I'm positive that nothing I try to but through maschine will give me that golden era sound.
+J3r3m1ah SP 1200 is a sampler. The 808 is an analog drum machine. Kanye definitely has both, though I doubt he really uses them much beyond throwing snippets of them into a DAW.
+Swindle Erricksan as far as I know Kanye has always had an MPC 2000 & an ASR-10. Nothing I've heard from him sounds like a 1200 joint. He's probably using software at this point.

bro just because todays generation doesnt know this beat maker doesnt mean they cant use it properly.
It take to long making a beat 10 secs is wack a big machine like that should have unlimited time for the price
It's like 1994 all over...... Boom Bap will forever live on.
Great tutorial. Nice 90's sound. More people would appreciate hip-hop if they saw clips like this.
+Todd VanDongen Absoloutely agreed
Thanks man
Aske Floppykat Do you have an e-mail address? I'm looking for producers. I can give you more info at your e-mail address.
@@floppy12k do you need a turntable to use this machine or can you make beats with just the floppy disks
When the aliasing from downsampling becomes an instrument in itself and really works.
Pete Rock was right all along. With the SP1200, you got to do a HECK of a ot of tricks and trades to make your beats sound excellent or timeless.
Hes the reason why I want to get this
I'm glad he is.
North Trenton New Jersey I have Roland Mv 8000 and Akai S2000. Tell me more of these tricks that ppl like pete rock do in order to obtain that good sound.
I wish I knew more. If I did shoot, then that means I got to own an SP1200. I prefer the Akai MPC.
North Trenton New Jersey yo these things are dumb expensive they're like $3k
That SP sound is so distinctive. GOLDEN.
Yo thanks for the love everyone! The instrumental is on my soundcloud. Peace!
+Aske The Floppykat Yo,I sampled that Nat-Nat song and I want you to hear what i did, maybe you guys can rap to it? what's your Email?
wtf
+Aske The Floppykat You're still a beast.
+Mercey most definitely
Aske -link please
Pete Rock sound..nice!
I've owned this machine 20 years ago. I sure miss it! The beat is dope, dude!
dude i haven't seen this video in years holy shit!! absolutely vicious every time i come back
The SP-1200 will always be like the holy grail for me.
Damn, this is great! Amazing
i often come to this video for inspiration...my favorite part of the beat is in between 2:15 and 3 minutes...i love that rugged old school east swing with the New York bounce...keep at it homie
clicketly clack… love those old school buttons and the sounds…
This beat is nuts!
I get a nostalgic feeling from this beat, brings back memories
When you change the tempo on a sample it distorts the sound..ol school!!
10 second magic right there
Thanks!
Dope ASS beat, one of them road trip break beats out of town hip hop stations used to play... Da real hip hop stations
True...
thanks.
Hands down my favorite beatmaking video.
Only sp1200 can flip samples like that. Great job pal.
i love the gritty sp1200 sound, plus the fact that it does something to the sound if you run the whole beat to the main out.. slight compression, something .. sounds punchy, slighty lofi..awesome!
it's just simply the technology of the time.. it's not a magic trick. it's a 12 bit sampler from 1988.. it sounds like a 12 bit sampler from 1988.
+Toki Gaming haha word
but yeah it does add compression. i prefer outboard compression though
just like any other piece of gear from any era it has it´s particular sound so i wasn´t refering to any magic trick .. just the appreciation and fact that after decades it´s still holding up and relevant in my opinion.

one of the coolest videos on youtube hands down
Times where different, and that created a whole fucking good vibe

J2theB isla instruments sp2400 en route
Johnny J made most of tupacs songs
using with this machine...!!damn miss the old days..!..anyways really cool beat man...

Broo... That beat is crazy sick. Listening to it like 50 times a day hahha!

With this video I want to buy the sp 1200!!!!!
+Roshaud Amaru the fuck i just read.......
+Sponge Banks he's saying the maschine software has SP1200 emulation and MPC emulation so you can get pretty close to the sound of actually using this equipment.
+Roshaud Amaru not the same at all. the sp has MUCH more punch to it and sound more warm
@@floppy12k yeah im a huge NI and Maschine fan, and Even I have to admit they didnt get anywhere near capturing the SP1200 sound.
Beautiful nostalgic mind freeing smooth flowing beat, what a gem.
Really well done man this is dope as hell
This crunchiness. How sweet. :)
you nailed it !!!
very cool and just shows you how much very little can make a very cool tune, simplicity and nice melody and harmony.....done.....no need for over the top clever shit...nice...cheers
Still come back to this. Do not sleep on it.
From the start i knew this is gonna be cool
Awesome, old school, best form of hip hop
floppy disc!! those were the days
What Blue Note record is that for the sax sample? It sounds beautiful.
lol he's like "fuck my MPC" all wrapped up and shit
its a 500, most find these to be very limited
Simon Schmid nah its a 2500. MPC 500 just got 12 Pads this one has 16
Hip 2 the game acapella would sound great on this beat.
Sample was even flipped similarly.
That floppy disk was like why am I here... to be tossed around????
Beautiful
This is great, convinced me to buy an sp-1200. Thanks for the dope beat!
Aske... you got to be one of the most iconic beatmakers I've ever come across, dude. Seriously... so dope.
Just found this. You are an inspiration :)
The buttery ring of the sp....
Awesome and creative use of a sample. Very inspiring!

Just Perfect!
Ya killed this man. Those chops are flawless and rugged i luv it
Yo Pay attention To the sp1200 tricks he does like assigning a blank sound to same channel to use buttons as a mute. if you dont understand. then move on....
Edward Posadas yes sir, u gotta do that on these older machines. Many mute channels on my s950
Silence as a choke group?
Smart
Dope shitt homie ... Thats what you call hip hop... It ain't hip hop if you ain't fucking with the SP
I Am In LOVE With This Beat! GREAT Work Aske!
Thanks homie!
He knows his machine!!!!
I like how the tempo doesnt change when you change keys on fl the higher the pitch the faster the tempo.. Idk if you understand me
u just need to change a resample to stretch in sample settings
Yes we do
the tempo does change with the pitch of the keys on the SP-1200 tho?
Yessssssss!!!!!!!!!Just as hard as a beat can come
Gracious ! more of this !
Thanks'
Very well done.
Any beat with Saxophone 🎷 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Fucking gem!
Dope joint!! I can feel the vibe right here.
Awesome work.

Not true I could go into it but I'm not cause it's always a way to get that sound with the technology of today ...it's HOW it's used and your EAR ...
I love this beat man 👌

Blessing from London ...
