How to do a CHOP BLOCK (with Craig Bryant)

  • In this video I am joined by Craig Bryant (a former international player) and Craig shows us how to do a backhand chop block.
    A chop block is a great way to mess up your opponent. You can use a chop block to change the speed and spin on the ball and generally cause lots of confusion.
    In the video, Craig demonstrates the chop block technique and I take on Craig in a few points. Can I return Craig's chop block? Watch to find out...

    Usually I love doing weird sidespin and underspin variations in this situation which are actually harder to do, but admittedly the chop block is more effective so I will try doing that much more often

    The cool thing about this shot is that you can literally use it right next to your body. If someone smashes the ball at you when you're caught too close to the table, the chop block can get you out of that situation.

    awesome ,Craig!
    really shows how many players simply follow patterns of playing in their rally but
    disruptive technique just unrails them as they do not read the spin production of the opponent or maybe they realise something is happening but no proper countermeasure is in place to be triggered.
    Koki Niwas setting up of the scene starts with his previous ball inviting/forcing the player to a specific placement allowing him to wait and prepare for his trademark humilating chopblock?

    Funny, I played this backhand chop block a few weeks ago without knowing it was an actual shot. Just playful tabletennis (very low level) and I tried this and the ball just went 'dead' with a lot of sidespin. My opponent said it was the shot of the evening, while I felt it came easily. Definitely going to try this more often, especially against players who dominate me with their fast topspin forehands.

      @Shelter81 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are left handed, your right leg should be in front. If you are right handed, your left leg should be in front.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shelter is correct. If left handed, right leg in front. If right handed, left leg in front. One coach explained it to me in this way... The big toe on my right foot should be lined up with my left heel (I'm right handed). This gives me an angle and allows me to twist and transfer my body weight as I play my forehand loops.

      the new technique used by top Chinese players is a bit different: they stand with 2 feets level, so they can turn to backhand shot quicker. note that unlike us, for the top players, backhand shot is as important as forehand shot.

      Here's an answer from Craig... "In the video I’m using the Joola Fever blade and Rhythm P (50 degrees) on both sides. The shot will be slight harder to play with fast equipment but the ability to execute the shot is down to the control and feeling a player can develop. For example, I’d be confident in picking up someone else’s racket and being able to execute the same shot."

    Tom, i think you have some problems with your forehand loop technique: when your bat hits the ball, you tend to lower your body a bit (like sitting down). this would reduces the power of your shot, and in my opinion, is a bad habit. If you stand still, but just twist your hip, your shot will be more powerful.

      You’ll need a fairly relaxed grip but as with most shots, there tends to be a tightening of the grip as you’re contacting the ball.

    how can you do chop block with Normal Rubber. I use this technique with my Long pimples, as by chopping the top spin, it goes back to the opponent backspin, then some. a bit confused with your chop block using normal rubbers?

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can still do the chop block with an inverted rubber. As Craig is showing, he is brushing down the back of the ball, changing it from topspin to a little backspin. With long pimples the spin change will be more dramatic.

    • @craigyb22

      Sin Sinner you can use it against side spin but you may have to alter the angle of your racket. Against backspin you would have to flatten your racket out and then you’re effectively pushing the ball BUT by all means, try pushing around the side of the ball, see what effects and success you get with it.

    How does rubber hardness affect the chop block? Soft, med, hard rubbers .... Is there a difference?

    • @Shelter81
      @Shelter81 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based off my own experiences with chop blocking, softer rubber generates less spin, but the margin for error is smaller. Hard rubbers generate more spin and are more precise, so you really have to angle your bat properly.
      TLDR:
      Soft rubber=less spin+shorter ball+more control
      Hard rubber=more spin+longer ball+requires precision
      Hope this helps :)

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's an answer from Craig... "With any shot, a slow combination of rubber and blade will give more control but the shot is possible with any combination of equipment."

    • @enthymeme4856

      I think it's more deadly and consistent with harder rubbers and more unstable and slower with softer ones. But that's just my experience.

    1:22 Tom, here your racket grip is incorrect, right?

    • @Shelter81
      @Shelter81 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Racket grip depends greatly on the size and shape of your hand. Perhaps it would be a bad grip for others, but it seems like a comfortable one for him. I highly doubt he would make such a mistake especially since he's a table tennis coach

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My grip is quite high up the handle, which means my finger can rotate a little on to the BH rubber when playing FH strokes (I adjust the grip when playing BH). I have been told be different coaches and players that this is wrong and also that it is fine! So it's a bit of personal preference. As Shelter says, everyone has a different size / shaped hand so I don't think it's possible for everyone to hold the bat in exactly the same way. My grip probably isn't 'perfect', but it seems to work fine for me.

    • @mingez
      @mingez 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TomLodziak Maybe we should start calling that signature stroke of Koki Niwa a "side slice" or a "sidespin push"? There's clearly a distinction to be made there! Another thing is that backspin with heavy sidespin becomes corkspin with sidespin! Sometimes the aforementioned Niwa plays his chop blocks (i.e. sidespin pushes) with little backspin, perhaps even some topspin (again perhaps call it corkspin)..?

    In the demonstration it would have been helpful if the knob (your opponent) tried to return the chop block in stead of letting it go by.

      I was trying to return it, but find it very difficult. And please try to moderate your language. Not necessary.

      You literally CAUGHT one of his returns. How is that "trying to return" it? Watch the video from our perspective and tell me if you think you made any decent attempts.

      @@tc1817 Oh bless you - you really are missing the point of the video. The chop block can cause a lot of confusion, this is why I was having great trouble returning it. The video is demonstrating the effect a chop block can have on your opponent - panic, confusion and mistakes. But thanks for watching and commenting. Have a nice day.

      You claim that you were trying to return the chop and couldn't. You CAUGHT one of his serves. Why didn't you hit it??????

    Honestly that's not a menacing CB. Your issue is that you chose a poor response to the CB. My conclusion is that you don't have a strong enough backhand counter.
