Thanks for this very informative video. I really like your instructions. Being a self-taught beginner/intermediate player I wonder if there a progressive sequence of shots one needs to master. I’m sure you have made videos about these, but it would be nice to put them is sequence from beginner to adv in a playlist. That would be really useful. Thanks once again for this.
Now that's an interesting comment. I have mixed feelings about this. I now coach 20 hours a week and only practice 1 hour a week. So I feel I have improved in some ways, but not in others as I am simply not practising enough. I plan to write an article about this for my website at some point.
@@TomLodziak I know what you mean. I guess I meant to say your form has improved. Whether that is translating to matches I don't know. Thanks for this video, Tom. I've been playing for many years but I'm still struggling with consistency in my topspin shots. Great job pointing out the difference between returning a topspin ball vs. a backspin ball and showing the movement in slow motion. This will greatly help me get better at this, I'm sure.
Me watching this before going for trials of a tournament, i have played backhand my whole life barely used forehand and now when i am adding forehand it is extremely hard to adapt so this video helped a lot.
My coach used to make us run circles around school for raising elbow higher than shoulder on drives or topspin-loops and if our legs got too exhausted he made us stand in front of mirrors(TT gym shared location with dancing class) and practice proper body motion. He was a great coach I miss him a lot. He learned his coaching methods from Chinese btw.

Hey Tom! In one TT video EmRatThich tried to explain that acceleration at the point of contact with the ball is the most imporant thing to create stong and good stoke (also that spin is the most important of spin, speed and power). I understand it in general, but I would like you to clarify it for us - how (or whether) should we (beginners) apply and develop acceleration in top spin stokes. Much obliged!
Acceleration is an important aspect of topspin strokes. Definitely agree. But from my experience, the bits beginner's should focus on most to begin with is the brushing contact, bat start point and bat finish point. When you have got these consistent, then I think it becomes easier to add the acceleration to the shot. If beginner's focus too much on acceleration to begin with, they often find it hard to get the correct timing and brushing contact.
Excellent..detailed..step by step lesson... Need more on arm grip orientation.. Your arm is straight from elbow..this is what I try to teach to simplify..many have hand twisted all manner of ways..I say simple..repeatable..disciplined stroke... Make as few variables as possiable.. Thank you
I wonder if one of the reasons why I sometimes miss the table while doing a forehand top spin smash is because I smash it like a tennis player. I mean, with too much exaggerated and dramatic arm movements, like I'm about to punch someone. When I'm smashing the ball, I often lose my balance right afterwards, and stumble forward. I believe I'm too tense while smashing. You're doing the forehand topspin with very little arm movement and effort. Also, it feels scary to do it. It's like going all-in in poker. I have a tendency to just avoid the forehand and sort of scoop it straight upwards from almost underneath the table instead, but that also has to do with lack of confidence. I haven't played in like almost 20 years, so I've become too passive compared to in the past. Being on the receiving end of a top spin shot feels like such a surprise, because I have to react so quickly, and return it with pace on the ball. So I hate playing against people who know how to do a forehand topspin, because it makes the ball literally shoot straight towards my face. It's like manhandling a wild animal coming towards you.
Never become passive as you're willingly giving the opponent the advantage. However if you are swinging so hard that you lose your balance, simply turn the intensity down a little bit. The ball is feather light and you can hit a winner at 75% strength. Don't forget that even with the smash, the table tennis stroke mechanics must be followed. The regular tennis mechanics won't allow you to recover fast enough.

Hello sir thanks for your great lesson but one question why are you doing the forhand top spin in two way once you are bringing your hand downward and upward and the second one wich I familiar with you are heating the ball in a accurate way ?
@Tom Lodziak Hey I'm an amateur trainer myself and train kids in my local club. The easiest way to return an aggressive forehand drive is with a block. I may a video about blocking some time ago, but the video is more focused on blocking heavier topspin. However, the technique is pretty much the same for defending FH drives. Here's the video...th-cam.com/video/SBQBww5Oml0/w-d-xo.html
Yes, this is the best approach. You do need a little bit of speed to begin with, to help generate some topspin, but maybe something like 50% speed. Then when you can achieve a consistent topspin stroke, start to gradually increase the speed.
You could try opening the angle a little more. Or try swinging up a little more. Keep altering the bat angle and swing trajectory until the ball clears the net.
