Here's the way we step the mast. We were doing a little work at the Wooden Boat Centre in Melbourne AUS and videoed the process. It's not a hard as it looks.
Hi Foster, the mast is solid Oregon Pine. see mackhorton.com for construction. A hollow or Bird's Mouth mast wouldn't flex and allow the rig to spill air in gusts as intended. A stiff mast is desirable in most sailboats, but not Sharpies. The mast, sprit and sail weigh about 50lb.
