Can Your Sling Do This?

  • At this point we should all understand why a sling is one of the most important accessories for a rifle or carbine. Carrying a long arm without a sling is the equivalent of carrying a handgun without a holster, except your long arm cant fit in a pocket.
A good sling primarily provides adequate and safe retention as its primary feature. However shooters throughout the ages have figured out ways to use their slings in more advantageous ways.
The sling wrap technique is an excellent and expedient way to gain a more stable sight picture in almost any position. Having the ability to lengthen your sling on the fly allows you to use this technique or switch shoulders, while still retaining the ability to secure your rifle to your body.
Ultimately a good sling is whatever you like and will use, as long as it isnt a 3 point. Those suck. However I think the BEST slings are two point and adjustable. This has long been the standard in the firearms industry but NOT ALL two point adjustable slings are the same!

Still rocking the OG Magpul MS1 lol. That thing has some of the best tube nylon I've ever seen. Slick, thin, and soft to the touch...God I wish I could find a roll of that laying around. It's the two point to one point design and honestly, does it the better than the newer options I've used. Simple HK clip (only thing I've changed from the original sling) in the front with a scaled down ASR hook in the back. For one point use it comes with a built in D-ring a few inches behind the rear hook. Much like a mama's boy, it lives and will never leave it's home that is my HK 416 lol.
Side note: 7:57 I wouldn't put too much stock in the "silent" sling stuff. As someone who stalk hunts on WML, YOU are faaaaaaaaaaarrrrr louder bumbling around with your two left feet than any sling noise. The rattle of your sling should only be worried about when you start getting to White Feather levels of sneaky. Until then, just stop stomping up the stairs and try to miss at least one branch going to the deer stand. Remember to always kiss the homies goodnight xoxoxo

@@LFAnon True, but a lot of noise dudes make is stomping along or plate carrier rattle. Biggest culprit by far is a rifle slapping mag on the front of the carrier. And, if you have enough dudes patrolling, ain't nothing quiet lol. "So are we there yet? Uh, I left my flashlight cover in the car. Guys I have to pee!" Like I was saying, there is a LOT more sound signature to worry about before you think about a quiet sling attachment. Case and point, please open any of those Velcro pockets on your spiffy looking jacket at night =).

I got fed up with overpriced hot garbage so I started making my own 2 point quick adjust slings a year ago, since then I've sold them to my squad, my coworkers and friends....and am debating online sales and gunshow tables
It's very similar to the guys you shouted out, so glad that we are all tracking.
I've learned so much about cordage, hardware, and the gorillion types of mil spec nylon it's unreal.
    What's relevent here;
The nylon I use is cordura truelock, mil spec A-A-55301 Type III. It is softer and smoother and great for slings, in your video I almost jumped out of my chair like Leonardo when you were talking about how the nylon felt. It's expensive stuff compared to most nylon that sling makers use, but to me it's worth every penny.

I had this discussion with Carl at Tactical Rifleman.
Using a sling as a shooting support makes sense on an AR when the barrel is free floated. Or when the barrel is big and bad like Mike at Kline Machine and his LSW.
Otherwise, using a traditional front sight post, you can pull your point of impact off by up to 6moa.
And Carl said I need to join the 21st century and usea damn free floated barrel.
And while he is right... I still use my FSP rifles. So the "GI Silent Sling" (who decided on that name?) is what I use and really like. If I was more modern I think an adjustable sling would be the shiznit.

1.5” wide MIL-W-17337 mil-spec nylon webbing is the ideal material for two-point slings on most defensive long guns. It’s extremely durable yet soft and very flexible, wearing like iron with excellent abrasion resistance. It has the right coefficient of friction for smooth transitions without slipping off your shoulder during administrative carry. It doesn’t rot or retain moisture, so it’s completely waterproof. In an emergency you can even use it as an effective tourniquet. You can buy it in bulk, choose your own hardware, and equip all your rifles to your preferred sling specifications.

This may be hard to convey over text, but your concerns about the fabric being rear biased is a very easy fix and actually an ingenious design of that sling. I believe it’s either the second or third slider from the rear that you can pull one way or the other to increase or decrease the overall length of the sling. I like that sling because you can use that instead of having to cut off or wrap up the slack of other slings after you get the overall length fit to your body type

The single point sling works best if you cut it and run it through your plate carrier on the back over the shoulder high enough up so you can shoulder the weapon with out having to lift the weapon up so it’s off you legs abs as high up as a tight two point one would be but you don’t need to loosen it to shoulder it the stock while dangling should be around your shoulder height you can put a make female clip on your rifle and carrier as well so you have a option to securely retain your weapon if need be like treating a downed guy
It’s works good when you have a ruck sack on with a plate carrier cuz with a regular sling you either put the sling over everything or have it under the ruck
If it’s under the ruck it’s not really maneuverable and if it’s over you have to pull the sling off if you want to ditch you ruck
especially if you use a quick detachable ruck In a emergency that shit might get tangled or caught on something at the least

You're wrong. Fix that Swift Design sling attachment that wraps around the stock by the charging handle. You don't want anything that can/will impede your charging handle movement. Yes, the A1/A2 fixed stock sling loops are not the best for modern sling usage. So you'll have to get creative.
