Dude, great stuff! LTH is easily my favorite song on the new album. That solo and its tone are phenomenal. And thank you to John for being forthcoming about some of the details.
HEYY MAN! Did I call it in the last comments section or what? I KNEW that was a Soldano. Unmistakable, incredible tone. That's what I get for trusting my ear. When everyone suddenly became convinced it was a Dumble, Fender, and Two Rock just because John said that's what he liked using, I felt very strangely about it (knowing the tone I was hearing). Doesn't matter what the artist says, trust your ears, because as it turned out it truly was the Soldano because he was probably talking more about live guitar than studio guitar.
You did call it!!! Makes total sense honestly! I will say though that when John said Fender, TR, and Dumble that was directly referring to the recording process and gear used on the record in the studio, the whole interview was. He never mentioned the SLO or CE-2 at all in it!
@@JustinJeske Huh! I figured it was more ambiguous. Well, like I said, trust your ears if they tell you something very different to the artist. The main way I could tell was that the CE-2 was very clearly being distorted AFTER, and was not coming after overdrives like John has used it in the past. So scoopy, too, which is almost impossible with a Two Rock and TS, Klon, or even Smoky Signal/other ODs John is known for.
@@JustinJeske Thanks so much for the great videos! Love it! Also that’s what I was wondering, was he using the chorus in front of the gain from the Soldano, and also in front of his drive pedals on his pedalboard? I felt like I recognized the sound of that pulsing you get with a chorus before drive in both his tone and Clapton’s tone on Pretending. Does anyone know for that matter if Clapton ran his rack chorus before drive too? Thanks a lot for the info!
Hearing his solos isolated is so...weird. It's hard to believe that's what was in the final track, as it sounds so, well,...messy. I mean, near the end, you can even hear him either to forget to mute the lower strings or accidentally let off of them. I guess I'm so used to hearing super-tight solos on his album tracks (in particular, Helpless, Rosie, anything off Continuum...those come to mind) that it's weird to hear how these sound isolated. I haven't really heard any stems of his album solos over the years, mainly just because I didn't care to go digging, but does anyone know if this is actually pretty typical of him?
@@JustinJeske The SLO is known for how heavy it can get anyway and I'm not sure if it's the one Clapton used or not. Brian Wampler actually made a tribute to it called the SloStortion. It's just odd to think that John Mayer was playing with that much gain. I always feel like when I'm playing my AC30 that I've got a ton of gain but hearing him soloed like that makes me think maybe I don't have as much as I thought. Songs like Try I've always felt like had quite a bit of gain but he was using humbuckers on that though.
@@SimpleManGuitars1973 yeah it's the same model amp that EC used during the period that JM is mimicing (e.g. th-cam.com/video/WPeFvNmARnQ/w-d-xo.html) . It's great to hear JM playing through a dirty amp rather than a clean amp with dirt pedals. Sounds so sweet.
I think it’s just an overdrive into the Soldano if any pedals were used. That amp was clearly cooking so throwing an OD like the Klon or TS into it would probably equal that OD tone in the studio. A fuzz would be a bit much with the Soldano I personally think.
Soldanos are bright, relatively scoopy amps (Basically the groundwork for the Mesa Triple Rectifier). It's just more gain than you're used to hearing. Amp overdrive is far more scoopy than pedal overdrive, in most tonestack designs. Mesa/boogie MK amps, Dumbles, Two Rock, and perhaps Matchless are some of the only amps that don't have a very scooped natural tube overdrive, and even then they sound scooped compared to a tubescreamer pedal ran in front of a clean preamp. It's too bad, because when you solely exist in the midrange, there is a fair amount of character that gets lost in the playing of the performer (Fingers brushing against strings, palm smacking the instrument, muting noises etc.), which is why you all love this solo so much - it's a more clear look at John's playing than the highly filtered, dirty/clean midrangey tone he usually has.
Ahhh man I really wanted to watch this and tried but the mouth noise was too much, like it was running on an overdrive wet reverb faucet echo delay peddle. Just out of curiosity, why not re-record? Or rather, why record all the mouth noise in the first place?
*CLICK BAIT ALERT* Despite the title of this post this video features NO actual excerpts of Mayer talking at all. Just another fan boy exploiting ALL his theories.
John blacking out pedals is such a god tier move because you know they are gonna hike up shit on reverb if he did use it.
He is a real one!
John is one of the reasons an original Way Huge Aqua Puss is almost impossible to obtain and if you can find one it's surely expensive.
I’ve been seriously trying to get one of those for a year now lol. It’s so difficult

Thank you Justin! Was gutted to have missed the IG Live but you had it covered 👍
Glad I could relay the info!
Thank you so much for this, I missed the cast and was gutted! You are the saviour, 🙏👍
Happy to help Gaz!!
Love the cheeky clip of Alfred. Another well done video, Justin. Keep them coming

Wow! Thanks so much for doing this.
Great video, appreciate the effort you put in to make these videos. Some great insights into this fantastic song and album.
Glad I could put together this video with CJH’s blessing for you guys! Thanks Simon!!
Amazing job as always Justin! Keep it up 😎

Thank you so much Juan!
if i were to get a soldano pedal, what would be good settings for this tone?
The Soldano tone is incredible.
Really enjoyed watching this! Looking forward to more vids :)
Thank you Rohan!!
At one point he asked John about the reverb and delay, and John said it was all post
The key for that chorus sound: Run it straight into the amp. Don’t use it in the Effects Loop.
Or in-front of drive pedals 😅

Session John is very good at not over playing. Young John did have a tendency of overplaying though from time to time live
Its called adrenaline. John talked about this in regard to the early Dead and co tours too
Please tell me someone uploaded the entire 2 hr interview. Great work Justin!
Thank you Patrick! If I see a full upload anywhere I'll share the link on my Instagram!
John said that the delay and reverb were added by Spike (the mixer) after recording
I was about the write this too. Backing you!
Yup he totally did!!!
Great video as always
Thanks Spencer!!
Your meme use and choice is extremely tasteful 😂 great video
Thank you Bryan, I'm glad you enjoyed and share my sense of humour!
I’ve been playing a shell pink Strat through an SLO for a couple years! I feel like Magellan or something 🤣. Killer tones regardless! ✌🏼

If I find them I’ll let ya know!!

can you do a tour of your studio
If enough people would want to see that, sure!
Heyy Justin. I believe the solos were played with a Casino. Just like the tone in I Guess I Just Feel Like. What do you think? 😁
Hey Jeremy! I personally think it’s the Silver Sky! The Casino with the Soldano would be a rather crazy and unique sound I believe!
That solo tone sounds WAY more gainy when soloed as opposed to in the mix. Am I the only one that thinks that?
Yup totally. Hearing it by itself is a totally different experience
