  • In this video I make a hand plane thicknessing jig. This jig allows me to achieve a consistent and repeatable thickness when making small parts, kumiko, and inlay.
This thicknessing jig is made from bits of scrap I had sitting around the shop. I used some MDF for the base, HDPE for the runners, and poplar for the guides. I sized it to fit a block plane. This could be sized to work with any type of hand plane.

I noticed you are using a rabiting block plane. I'm about to purchase a lie nielson and curious if a rabitting plane is beneficial doing this or if it's what you have on hand?

For this specific jig it is not needed. I use the rabbeting block plane a lot because it is the best block plane I have.

Use your words man, I don’t really understand how you use this jig /shooting board or how it works - just exactly how you made it. Thanks for taking the time to show your work anyway

It is used to plane small pieces to a a precise thickness. Like when making kumiko strips.
