I have the Cory Wong, Soldano, Nolly, Gojira, JP and Tone King. I like all of them for different reasons. I totally agree that there is getting to be some overlap in delays/reverbs and other effects that really should be made more unique to each Archetype. I have the Mesa Boogie on 14 day trial and I love it. It's easily the best one for my style and I always wanted this amp.
For my heavy tones, i track using the omega granophyre. It’s a bare bones metal amp, and I’m not weighed down with tons of effecting. It’s a perfect rhythm machine. Though, the mark2 is something that might dethrone the omega
I have 6 of them (bought on black friday sale), and probably won't get any more. Definitely see a fair amount of overlap. My favourites are Abasi, Plini and Tim Henson. The bass ones are great too.
Cory Wong sounds the best for non-metal players. It can go from a convincing Jazz tone to a dirty trio-era John Mayer dumble one. I'm sure the tube screamer and secondary overdrive are similar throughout most of the plugins, but theres something about the CW ones that just feel correct to my ears.
I have the Petrucci, Rabea, and Soldano. Tired Corey and Tone King (Plus, I have the actual amp anyway, and the plugin is damn close), but honestly, for just good tone, I always find myself choosing the Soldano.. just sits better in a mix. Love playing the others. Just Soldano is more useful in a song.
I have a few of them, my essentials are Darkglass suite for bass, Nameless for high gain, Cory Wong for cleans, ambient and low/mid gain, and JP for leads. Although I have to say that their plugins definitely overlap a lot, and at this point they really should update their catalogue.
Yeah there' a lot of overlapping eah other when you get more than 5 or 6 of these plugins. Definitely Plini is a must have like the JP, Gojira, Tone King ....the Soldano, Abasi, Nolly while the Fortin Cali and Nameless are beasts of their own. If I add the two bass versions (Parallax nd Dark Ultra) I realize that I've got 11 of them and it's enough I guess ....at least from these guys 🙂
I've got Wong, Petrucci, Rabea, Tone King and Henson. For rock, I'd say Petrucci is my go-to - with Rabea coming in 2nd. For single coil Strat clean , the Wong is outstanding. I downloaded the free trial of the IIC+ yesterday. I agree with you that "its quite possible to make it sound pretty bad". I only had a chance to play it for about 15 minutes. I'll have to give it more time. Initial impression was that it didn't do anything that I couldn't get out of Petrucci and Rabea.
Even some of the factory presets sound kinda....Well. A bit something - but I think there's probably potential in it to sound really decent? And at least it's versatile?
@@johnnathancordy Maybe it's because I did a run-through of the factory and artist presets that I didn't jibe with it. I just gave it another 30 minutes - this time starting at the default setting and building up from there. I actually got a pretty respectable tone working now. Very fizzy plugin though. Don't know if I'd pay full price for it. Maybe during a half-off sale I'll spring for it.
@@DrProgNerd Imo, those artists probably didn't really do much research into how the II C+ works. I see a lot of the presets were people trying to dial in the tone just with the knobs and treating the graphic EQ as they would a post eq and barely touching it, when in reality the eq knobs come before the gain stages and it really can make the tone muddy if you use them too much, especially the bass and middle. The mark series is just a unique amp in the way you have to think about it, and people who are used to other amps will have trouble dialing it in. The 5 band eq is really what makes or breaks a sound in that amp. Also there's the fact the knobs have "secret features", like the treble knob also adding some gain. My first presets in this plugin were also horrible, I understand it much better after using it for months.
I'm being completely shameless. I own Petrucci and Mark II C+, but I'm also 14-day trialing most of the plugins that have really good amps in them (tone king, plini, soldano, etc), and shamelessly making a truckload of TONEX captures of the tones I make since I'm mostly just interested in their amp tones and not the effects which I can get from amplitube or the plugins I already have.
The tone king DSP is pretty amazing for the money… the ‘amp’ itself is worth way more than the asking price… not a huge fan of the effects, esp the ODs, outside the compressor being a bit useful… but I run it with my standard valve amp board and it sounds incredible and makes it so so easy to record at home.
I've got Soldano, Nameless and Gojira. Soldano Lead preset is amazing. Nameless is awesome for rhythm guitars. I don't really find myself using Gojira...
Great video! I really like the Plini, Omega, Nolly & the Mesa Mark 2 ( the mark two is my newest addition ). There have been a few that i didn't;t really vibe with. They can't all be winners
Just trying the Plini amp and OD and although it sounds nice, it just sounds .... kinda artificial. I normally run a patch with the standard Plexi 100 patch through the 212 CA Recto V30 cab and it really sounds authentically amp like. Cleans up super nice and gives that full on plexi whollop. I dunno perhaps I'm too old school......he says using a leading modeller.... lol
Well that's moreorless my conclusion - though I think Petrucci is much easier to dial in due to the simplified format? Probably a situation where if you already have one you may not need the other?
Fantastic playing If you capture a patch from an fm9 on the QC is it the same to play I think that’s what I want to ask . I like the idea of lots of captures on one page then just some DDL Would that work ,seems like a easy gig set up
Anyone know which song the intro is inspired by? I know it’s a Petrucci song but can’t pin it down 😅 Edit: It’s Paradigm Shift by Liquid Tension Experiment
@@sambroxguitar I know, I’m sad about it too. It’s a mixture of things. John’s doing well, I’m not saying he’s forgotten where he came from but you know. The JCU doesn’t need a phase one character anymore. I’m a nice Easter egg for long time fans of his work.
Hey JNC ! Thank you for your videos. I'm thinking about jumping on the plugin ship. I've got a MacBook Air M2 and I'm thinking of buying the MOTU M2 to use a an interface. Would that be okay? If you also have a video about plugins 101 and how to get started I'd appreciate it. Cheers !

I thought the Synth plugin was pretty neat on the Rabea one. Still have not been compelled to shell out $100+ on any of them personally. They sound good and everything, but since I snagged Tonex SE for $50 and I have found heaps of free plugins, I think I am set. If I didnt have much time to do all of that, maybe it would be more appealing. Well, that, and I own a Mark V 25.
I think Neural DSP is fragmenting their own market with too many signature plugins that are very similar between themselves, I'd like to see them releasing a "best of" or a suite combining their most useful features and also port or create a plugin for iOS and of course merging their plugins with Quad Cortex and releasing a PC editor for it!
I play post rock and ambient, so I got the Cory Wong, Plini, and Tone King. Love all three of them.
SLO 100 all day long
Archetype nolly is by far the most versatile one Imo

That Neck Pickup Tone at the opening is my Holy Grail. Would love an HX Stomp attempt at it.😝
Mark II, Tim Henson and Nameless for me!!
The lead tones in abasi are also awesome!
Boogie with a strat...giving of those Clapton 80s tones....nothing wrong with that!

I have the Tone King and just picked up Cory Wong on their 50% off sale. I play mainly clean with some grit, nothing too heavy so these work great.

Thinking of building a board to use with Neural plugins. Do pedals work the same as they would with a real amp?
I still use Nolly for almost anything with FX from others. It's a swiss army knife, Shiva clean, 800 crunch and 5150 for chug.

That lead sound on the Cory Wong plugin is insane (well because your playing is, obviously!) Has this preset been made available ? Cheers !
I had the same problem. What is the best.So I got my PRS MT15 Amp and no need for plugins any more.Just collecting IR's.
tim henson will be my fav. i have gojira, JP, plini, nameless, and cory wong.... 2nd and third amp of tim just sounds beautiful.
Tim Henson is the most versatile IMO, but I’m picking up Rabea’s next.
That Wong sounds just right.

Isnt the archetype Petrucci modeled after his signature amp which is basically a IIC+? Would it be a waste to get both?
