E350 rear AC fix - blend door replacement

- Ford E350's with rear AC have a common problem with the blend door breaking. Normally this results in heat coming out of the bottom vents when you are expecting cold air from the top vents. Here I show how to test and replace the rear blend door. Unlike what other videos show there is no need to disconnect the heater core hoses, the AC lines or entirely remove the rear HVAC box
This is the best video to get to the blend door! Here is my $5 fix for the actual door so you don't have to buy the $100 kit, thanks again! th-cam.com/video/rt6erxpDa60/w-d-xo.html
Nice man
I use MEK to Repair mine.
Ours is blowing air through the top, but its hot.. front ac is cold
The doors are cheaper now. I fixed mine years ago in the same manner you did and it failed recently. Found multiple new ones for around $25.
@@richsoutherland2924 Thanks for the info Rich. Do you have any links for the $25 blend doors just in case I need it in the future? Was it ebay, amazon or? Thank you! -Robert
I need ONLY AC ever, NEVER heat (in the rear, cargo section, for my van), so, I'm going in there with some duct tape and see what happens! Lets see what happens when the gate is taped on to ALWAYS blow to the top! EDIT: IT WORKED! THANK YOU so much Lehew Tech!!! You saved me hundreds of dollars in repairs and being offline while waiting for repairs (not that you can find a mechanic that's available these days, not even the dealer, they said come back next month with appointment!).
Excellent video! Thank you so much! My symptoms were exactly what you described: hot air from the floor vents and nothing out of the ceiling vents. I got to the blend door and discovered the exact same problem. Instead of trying for the screw holding in the actuator, I just put duct tape on the top of the door to hold it to the housing in the open position. Yay! Cold air coming from the vents! Thank you so much for helping me to discover the cause!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who was thinking of doing this 😅. I don’t have to cash to address the actuator but I need A/C ASAP
Hands down best video on blend door replacement .Believe it or not I have had to replace this crappy thing 3 times in the 8 years. I always come back for a refresher. Thank you!
I have watched many videos in this is the first one to show me anything about how to remove the interior paneling. Thank you very much 🙏✌️
Another thank you! AC lines were still cold so I assumed an actuator or blend door problem. Your video saved me the trouble of figuring out how to access the door. I made a tab/post out of metal and 5mm nuts and bolts rather than replacing with another blend door destined to fail. Nice to have rear AC again. My kids are grateful. :)
Here’s what I did to connect the door and actuator - in case anyone needs help in the future. With a little wiggling and wrestling you can get the ac hoses towards the front of the van from the fan out and around the side plastic. This allows you to sort of twist the entire unit out - front end farthest. Then you have enough space to install the blend door and actuator together. To clarify, that whole rear unit is about 3 feet long. The part nearest the front of the van is the rear AC evaporator coil and lines. If you wriggle that part out you can sort of lift and tilt the entire unit out and have enough space to reinstall the door, actuator, and screw fairly easily.
Could you explain how you got the whole unit to turn? On the bottom left of the assembly there’s metal piping keeping it grounded
@@patrick121295 I left the AC lines in place and wrestled the other end out just enough to slide the part in. Probably had to remove a screw or bolt somewhere on the it. Was tight for sure.
Thank you!! Thank You!!! I fiddled with that thing for over 30 minutes before reading your comment. You saved me!
@@mitadaka I’ve been helped on here so many times I feel obligated to help back. So glad I was able to return the favor.
Thank you so much for this video! I was able to fix my blend door today because of your video. I also was able to rig a fix for the actual door using some parts for $5 from Home Depot. I plan on posting a video of that and link my video to yours for people to watch. Thanks again!
THIS is a prime example of planned obsolescence - either that, or sadistic or stupid engineers
The placement of that 8mm bolt alone should win some sort of award
Thanks for this video!! Couldn’t figure out for the longest time why the fan would run and I had no ceiling air. Wow that bolt under the vac unit is a pain to get to!
Great Video. 2012 E-350. Mine broke in the same spot. I repaired the door with MEK solvent and added some scrap ABS plastic for reinforcement. I don't mind spending $100 for a replacement part but if the part is a bad design it will just happen again. Now mine is stronger then original. Hardest part was putting the actuator back in where you had to use two hands. but I got it.
Thank you so much! I have a 12 passenger so I had even less room to work with. I ended up taking the next six screws off along the side and that gave me enough clearance to pull the unit out some and install the door and the actuator together.
Awesome, you didn’t record the only part anyone will for sure have trouble with

Bro your video helped me get thru fixing my ac.. It's been worked on by 3 didn't companies and they all F'd it up lol.. HOW idk, this is a VERY easy repair.. Thanks for teaching us some secrets and tricks.. MUCHLY appreciated..
+William penrose Glad to hear you got it sorted out brother
Is it supposed to have heat from the upper vents
+Robert Padgett No. A.C. from upper vents only, heat from lower only.
Thanks for this! Huge help, got my rear A/C working again. Also used the Ford Fix $5 solution!
Used this video to replace mine. What a nightmare but thank you for the video. It helped tremendously.
Thank you!!! Exactly what my 1998 e350 Econoline clubwagon problem. Followed your tips and it worked !!!!
Thanks for the video! 2010 E350 with the same problem; glued a piece of LEGO to hold the door open. Problem solved...until winter comes.
Would it be possible to put a push pull wire or rod for Manual movement of the door?
Great video, I have the same symptoms, I never open the system but now I know what to do, Again thank you
Had to hold your breath and grit your teeth just right before that blend door was going back in. Dayum! Thanks for the video and the help. I have a friend who has a wheelchair lift in the way, so it's not going to be fun.
Beautiful Teeth and great video. Thank you. One handed job for most of the video, good job Brother!
+Vicky Love Thanks Vicky! I hope your van is running well.
One tip the bottom cover towards to front is screwed in with a Phillips screw just like the ones you can see. Everything else was exactly like this video.
Thanks for the video , question is it easy to remove all the rear AC with the plastic trim , I have an opportunity to buy one like that , I will build a camper. On that side will be only custom wood cabinet ,
Great video! How did you hook up the blend door and the sliding metal piece?!

Super helpful video. Thank you so much
Great how to video, I had this same problem with my 2013 E350, thanks for your help and for posting this video..!
Glad u got it sorted thanks for watching
Is there any recommendation to fix this issue near Mesquite Texas?
Same issue with this actuator door, that little piece has been in every E-350 that I have seen on youtube. I have a 1997 version and that's exactly the issue I saw. I'm 3D printing the piece that I plan to attach to that door as I cannot find the replacement piece online.
You ought to 3d print a new car
Quick question I’m working on a Ford 2004 E250 The problem I’m having is when I’m switching between floor and mix I’m not getting the defroster It’s stuck on regular air conditioning coming out the front Vance should I be able to open the ventilation door by hand when the vehicle is off or put in mixed mode or floor mode or vent mode turn the actuator vacuum pump actually be seized causing me not to have it working when I switch the knob on the dashboard I do here it’s trying to do something
Good video... but PLEASE explain how to get the tab on the blend door into the metal hole on the actuator, when the blend door is in place. It is freaken impossible.
I remember that being very difficult, I can't remember exactly how I maneuvered it into position but I do know that I put the blend door into the housing and then I was able to connect the actuator to it

I found it easier to assemble the door onto the actuator while outside the HVAC box, raise the rear HVAC as much as possible, wiggle in a corner of the mode door and pull from inside at the same time that I was pushing & adjusting assembly from outside. The rear unit can lift at an angle quite a bit without any harm to connections or hoses.
This solved my problem! Thanks so much!!!
Thanks for putting in this up, I'm going to give it a shot. Where do you recommend getting the correct parts from?
Super helpful!! Thank you!!
Before viewing this. The Ford garage says about 600.00 ..6 hours labor plus parts..Wow..I know I can do this..Thanks for posting!
Yea man big $$ job! Thanks for watching.
no. that’s for the entire ac, lol. the blend door is 1.8
When you slid the flap in without it being attached to the actuator, then dropping video to finish, was misleading. I put the flap in attached to the actuator, which wasn't that hard. After that it was real easy. I also heated everything up with a hair dryer and no clips broke.
Thank you for this, brother. God bless you
Hi my van wasn’t blowing any aire on the back and the mechanic took off the first piece that you took off and left the back on ac only for now stating that I need to buy not just that piece but the whole system starting from front to back which I don’t understand why but the piece that is broken in your video is the same piece that I need, and he said that I don’t need only that piece but the the system
great video and explanation
Great job!, thank you so much!
Do you have a link for that part
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO, VERY INFORMATIVE AND DETAILED, ANSWERED LOTS OF QUESTION OTHERS COULDN'T
+Chaplain Luis A. Montalvo Sr. Glad to help you out sir
Thanks very helpful
Thank you!!!!
How much vacuum did you have at the blue hose?
So whats the trick to getting that door installed and connected to the metal arm that opens and closes the door. I can't for the life of me get that piece connected once the door is installed. The angle is completely wrong. Any insight? The part of the video where you couldn't record because you needed two hands was the exact part I needed to see. Words of wisdom welcome.
my problem is it blows ice could air for about 30 minutes , and then turns to hot air . no one been able to help? any advice?
Same here.
actuator or a vacuum hose leak
Can you tell me the name of that piece?
Awesome video !! Help a lot .
7:09 Screw you old broken part XD
Sweet!! Many thanks!! 🤙🏽
Great info thanks!
Nailed it. THanks
Thank you for posting this! What's the part number for that kit?
Found it online... PN 5C2Z-19A760-A
excellent video
Awesome, thanks!
That 40+ dollar actuator part is missing a clip. How much is that a problem?
The vent door on the passenger side only seems to open when I go into AC mode it doesn’t open on the vent mode And I can’t get the heat to come out the floor
Thank man! Awesome!
EXCELLENT!
Awesome, thank you
I recommend starting at the front to see if you have vacuum making it through the firewall. I have seen tons of these videos, and, like mine, the issue was up front for most of them, vacuum leakage on the tube that passes through the firewall on the right side. Just remove the doghouse engine cover and check vacuum at any black colored vacuum supply line. Mine was at 4 and it should be between 15 and 20 I believe. Good luck and reply with questions... th-cam.com/video/XpaKFgL6EhM/w-d-xo.html
The van I drive for toddlers A/C rear doesn't come on, only front a/c works. What's going on?
Does it blow air at all?
Lehew Tech not at all for the rear passengers. Just front.
Check the rear blower motor fuse and go from there
Lehew Tech Oh! Okay! Thanks I'll check that.
It seems like a very weak suction because the door doesn’t open all the way
Do you have the part numbers to the blend door and actuator?
Actuator: 6C2Z-18A318-BA and mode door: 5C2Z-19A-760-A. Seems pricing has gone down and the mode door sells from dealership at less than 20 bucks but the vacuum actuator is not available. If you go yo Ford Parts Giant you find them both for sale and a whole lot of info on related parts/parts numbers.
Necesitas un aire para ti para que no sudes tanto me gustó tu vídeo me fue de gran ayuda te lo agradezco el titi de Oklahoma City
The hardest part is connecting the door and the actuator, wtf Ford really no better way of clipping these on?
I clipped it on before setting the door into the box slit, with those two 10mm bolts off the HVAC box moves quite a bit. I had one hand pulling the mode door inwards and with the other I carefully maneuvered the actuator & door into place but it was more of the hand pulling from the box that got the whole thing in there.
Nice job and video. That’s a weak spot in the design. Mine has broken at least 2x over the years
Typical bad engineering design
I just bought a 2002 e350 front vents don’t work and rear only blows out hot I love fords but these engineers are stupid as hell but I see why they want our money
