American expat in the UK, British wife, and headed to southern Africa for a year here. We know about Aussie adventure camper trailers and wanted one for our big expedition but they are made out of Unobtanium here in Europe. I was starting to build my own out of a military trailer when a MDC Cruizer Highside appeared for sale here in the UK. I snapped it up so fast I almost broke the guys arm. The Scotsman and his Oz missus dragged it all the way from you to here. And they flogged it off for a good reason; this much canvas is a terrible idea in soggy old England, but perfect for warmer climes we are headed to. My wife, who is a real off-road out-doors girl AND a fab cook, LOVES IT. Personally, I wish it were in the smaller category like you have (Patriot, maybe? but who can afford that :-0 ) But it's great to be able to put a little space in the bed between me and the lovely creature I travel with that cycles between nuclear reactor and deep freeze on an hourly basis!! I can set the forward fold up and put it down by myself in about 10 minutes without the awning. Yeah, that's a nightmare to put up and take down. I'll replace that with 270' awning that raises up much like you have. You'll want to upgrade to a lithium battery and dc-dc/solar charger at some point. Real game changer. Table; get a canvas maker to make a weather proof bag for your big plastic folding table and it will stay clean. Lastly, my trailer has the same McHitch. It's probably better for your size trailer than mine. I find it great to tow but awful to hook up on anything less than flat and straight. I'm going to replace it with the DO35 hitch soon. Looking forward to seeing more about yours in action. Cheers, y'all!
Thanks mate. I’ll do lithium at some stage, but not until I need to. I have a dcdc ready to go in it now. It’s lithium compatible. Sounds like you found the perfect camper too!
Built my own trailer. Same wheels and tyres as my rodeo,240 litres eskies, toolbox for straps and chainsaw, 3.9 metre kayak, 3x20 litre jerrycans. Rack on top with a dune 1200 gas strut opening rtt. Have the bed already made. 100 litres water tank , 200 litres diesel in back of ute plus 63 litres diesel in standard ute tank. Floor of tent about 1.2 metres of the ground. Trailer weighs about 750 kilos.
It’s an absolute minefield working through the camper trailer market. You raise a lot of very good points mate. My sticky point was I wanted Australian made. Settled on a drifta Offroad tourer (DOT) small compact light weight easy to tow easy to set up same track width as my GU. And bloody tough, you could take this camper to war and come out the other side fine
The main thing that stopped me getting an Aussie made one was the cost. I just couldn't find anything remotely close and affordable. Very happy with this purchase
bloody good set up you have, I'm not usually a fan of the RTT, but on a trailer I reckon its one of the best ways to use them. I like a fast set up........ with swag, stretcher and awning probably takes me 12min. I like those pod campers the more I see of them. cant get much quicker than that. good vid Thanks for the work
I looked and looked at the pods and I struggled with the ability to carry wood on most of them. That was a deal breaker for me. The ones that can carry some wood, tended to be more $ than I could afford. The RTT was the same for me mate. I didnt want one on my vehicle, but this is a great setup on the camper.
yeh thats true, never thought about carrying the wood with a pod camper. They are big bucks for such a little camper, thats what holds me back, hard to see the value in them. End of the day its what ever works for each camper, who knows I might eat my words and end up in a RTT hahah
The tyres that come with those things are average at best. I’d highly recommend changing them to a better tyre. Great setup though, looks bloody awesome
I have DOT series 1 camper. It a great, small footprint of road camper. However for trips where I only stay a night and then move on. I still swag it. Still gets plenty of use though. Anytime i do a trip where i need a base camp, like a fishin trip. The camper is the ritz. 😊
Any camper trailer that has been made in china will be lower cost and lower quality. Most people buying them will not use them enough to realize the problems.
Congrats on your new toy - enjoy the adventures and love seeing the campers out being used!
Great bit of kit mate. Good job

What a Great Camper for one or two people. Looks easy to set up and fold down. Lots of storage, and fits on a small campsite.
It’s absolutely perfect for us mate
Great looking unit Shayne and how versatile. Great find it at that price.
It’s a great bit of kits mate

Never seen a hitch system like that before. Pretty cool.
It’s the cats meow for sure

It’s a ripper mate. No problem, life happens. Saw a bloke detecting at the beach yesterday.
@@Haveacrack76 he find much, should have asked him to pop along to yours and look for your knife
@@Greengrass1972 HAHA no he didnt. "Hey mate, I live 7 hours away, can you come find my knife?..." 🤣

Really thought about the DOT. It was between that, the one we got and the hardkorr ones.
Go the might DOT. I’ve got one as well mate. Best thing I’ve ever bought besides the patrol to tow it
Nice
Thanks mate
Can you open the barn door freely when hitched? I wonder how much space is there as my vehicle got a single large barn door
Yep, no problem at all. I can even open the drawers in the back.
Looks like a great camper. Did you consider a Patriot camper? Love mine.
What do they start at second hand??
Within his said budget?
Patriot aren’t a good trailer and over priced
I couldn’t bring myself to sell a kidney so I could afford one. They look great, but out of my price range
@@christurner68 have you ever owned one?
That looks the ideal kit, just needs solar.👍
Very soon mate
14:44....Thats what she said
I did that just for you. Actually it was for jreg.
Any camper trailer that has been made in china will be lower cost and lower quality. Most people buying them will not use them enough to realize the problems.
Probably right mate
True.
Offroad vans are too pricey, especially considering how many people have insane amounts of warranty/workmanship issues with them.
Way too pricey. I wouldn’t want to take it off a sealed road for what they’re worth
