I’ve watched you for years, Dr. Punch, but have a whole new perspective and appreciation for you now. And Dale Jr. - I never cheered you on much as a driver. Jerry's contribution to this sport was special. NO ONE has ever had the unique impact on this sport Dr. Punch has. He could be on tape doing the Quaker State Track Facts segment telling you how sway bars operate, or what stagger is, and the second they cut back to live TV he could be on the front stretch, wedged into Rusty Wallace's car at Bristol, creating an airway to get him breathing again and save his life. Not only that but he was articulate with the fans and explained injuries in a detailed but not overly graphic way that told us what a driver might be dealing with. There will NEVER be another Dr. Jerry Punch in NASCAR.

    I loved this interview. Excellent. Great heart warming stories. I have a story to add of how Dale Sr. Made me look like a hero when it was him all the way. My friend was in a terrible car accident in Indianapolis. Couple people were ejected from the car and died. My friend, a big Dale Earnhardt fan was in a coma with major head injuries. Her family reached out to me because they knew I represented a local dirt track and went to Daytona every year and had Nascar connections. Her family ask me if I could get Dale to send her something. I told them it might be easier to get the President of the US autograph but I would try. The gals in Daytona dug up a photo of Dale, gave the photo to Les Richter (director of competition), Les took the photo to the next race, had Dale autograph specifically with my friends name & wrote a special note. Les returned photo to gals at Nascar who mailed the photo to my friend at the hospital. My friend made a full recovery and is to this day very proud and thankful of Dales gift. He was a special man. A very special man.

    I listened to the podcast and I have to say a 2nd appearance by Dr. Jerry Punch is required (IMO). I feel you’ve only scratched the surface of what this man has done both in and out of the booth. Great episode!! I didn’t know Rusty had such a wreck at Bristol. More research it is then. Cheers

    Never really knew who Jerry Punch was- always heard his name on the broadcasts back in the day. Fascinating interview here, what a gift he was to so many drivers that he helped in their time of need.

    Man as a kid watching nascar I always wondered why they called him "doctor" Jerry Punch when he was reporting from pit road. This video answered so many questions! God bless you Dr. Jerry Punch, what an incredible human being.

    Growing up as a kid and following NASCAR in the late 80’s, early 90’s, I never knew Dr. Punch provided care for the drivers like this; let alone saved their lives. Truly a great human being, and obviously an unclaimed gem for the sport. We need more folks like him in our lives, country, and in the world. Best wishes Dr. Punch!!!

    Doc Punch is a real life hero. No two ways about it. Until I watched this the main thing I remember about Jerry Punch was the way Kurt Busch absolutely talked to him like a dog one race where Kurt crashed out early and even while that was happening he still remained professional.

  • @DanielCaudill
    @DanielCaudill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I love this but my only question is how can he talk about this stuff now? Like the story he told about the driver who thought he was having a heart attack, he gave enough details to figure out who that was. So isn’t that breaking confidentiality or does it just not matter any more because it’s been so long?

    • @lewiskemp5893
      @lewiskemp5893 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He didnt break it. Youre a big fan if you figured it out. I have my opinion

      Most of the drivers already told their injury story.

    I asked for Dr. Jerry Punch a few months ago. I was unable to comment when this first came out but I did listen to it. I know nobody asked him to come on because of my comment but I can't thank Jr. and Dirty Mo Media for having him on. This man has so much knowledge and so many stories to share. I feel he's underappreciated amongst fans today.
    Dr. Jerry Punch and Chris Economaki are probably my two favorite media personalities in the history of the sport.

    I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Jerry in Johnson city Tn the year Dale spun Terry. Very genuine guy. Had his family at the hotel restaurant. Crossed paths with him on the elevator the following morning, he had an autographed champagne bottle given to him by Dale from the night before. He was proud of that thing. Very humble guy who seemed to always have time for the fans. Good people.

    These podcasts are amazing for the history of Nascar. It's so different now... Ahh the good Ole days. You think future generations will look back at these times and say the same?

    • @SurprizedDaily
      @SurprizedDaily 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should, because if they don't, they're truly missing out on how NASCAR used to be and unfortunately is Not any longer! I quit watching the day we lost Dale Sr., and imHumblesto, it's never been the same since and never will be again! Like Richard Petty said in a clip I saw him recently say, "NASCAR is no longer about racing, it's a Show!" Couldn't be said better by anyone and I totally agree with his take on it, 1000%!
