Poles eat Polish food at home.Traditional home-made food is very popular in Poland, but when we go out we want to eat something different. That's why there are many foreign restaurants. You can eat traditional Polish dishes in milk bars, but you won't usually find them in shopping malls. I personally support the idea of non-trading Sundays. People started spending their free time with their families in a more creative way, rather than shopping. This is not only the case in Poland, the situation is similar in Germany and other European countries.

27 dollars an hour pay will make you homeless in Los Angeles coz you can't even rent a studio and have to live in a car.
Show me a case that anybody in Poland that has a job and "umowa o pracę", which can't afford to rent a room?
      Bet You voted for TuSSk

Good man, you may not realize it, but your talk is a bunch of nonsense supported only by your opinion. Sunday has been a day off from work for centuries, and it doesn't matter what you think about it. Salespeople also need a day off, and if you don't like it, cry in the corner and shut up.@y0uw0tm8

@y0uw0tm8 Do you work so much that you don't have time to do such a simple and short-lived activity as buying food or vacuum cleaner, etc.? Maybe you are a slave then? Or maybe you are an addict? In either case, something should be done about it, because it's dangerous.

In addition in Belgium , Neaderland, France, Spain are some limitations restrictions on store operations on Sundays. Regards from Krakow ! Enjoy Poland.

    Hello there!
When it comes to closed shops on Sundays, do you remember how it was in the UK, even back in the 1st half of 1990s? I do remember when for my geography project I had to do a street layout of shops (types of shops that you could find on high streets) and I did that on Sunday. Ealing Broadway which is a pretty busy place even on Sunday, was all empty. No cars, almost no people on the street, everything closed. That was the best time for me to do the task :)
I wasn't sure when it was, so I did a quick research, and it must have been during a Spring of 1994, as Sunday trading was legalised in August of 1994. AFAIR shops were closed earlier on Saturdays.
Most German-speaking countries also have non-trading Sundays for longer than I could think of.
In Poland non-trading Sundays came into life in 2018, but I do not know for how long before Sundays were with shops being open - OK I've just read that trading Sundays were in Poland since the beginning of the 90s - I guess that might have been after the collapse of communism in Poland, where everything started to change here.

  • @jerzy7118

On Sunday, all stores are closed so that employees have 1 day a week off to spend time with their families. But there is an exception, a shop can be open when the shop owner stands behind the counter and serves customers himself. On Sundays, confectioneries are usually open. Not all pharmacies are open on Sundays, but in pharmacies there is a sign indicating which pharmacy is open on Sunday. Regarding the knowledge of English, you can communicate with the younger generation because after the overthrow of communism in schools, they started learning this language instead of Russian, which was taught in schools by the older generation . I also learned Russian in primary school and German in secondary school, but there is nothing left of it if you don't use it. Regarding the ban on filming in supermarkets, it depends on the owner of the facility, and usually the owners of super markets are not Polish companies, but German, French, Portuguese and English - this is not a rule.

It depends on what you mean by younger generation :). Those born in the 80s (beginning of 80s) would be the last generation to learn Russian. Parents in my school fought with the "system" so that we would learn English and not Russian. AFAIR that change wasn't too difficult to achieve. It may have been around 1989/1990 or something like that.

The question should be: is there a Brit who can speak Polish in Poland? That's the real challenge, if any of you Brits can, you have great powers, you are someone special. Last comment, Sundays are special days in Poland, it is family time and actually, you Brits could learn something from family oriented Poles so that you could have fewer divorces. - Muzeum Życia w PRL, ul. Piękna 28/34, Plac Konstytucji, godziny otwarcia w niedziele: 10-18 h

It is convenience for you but not for employees who instead of spending time with friends and family need to go to work. Polish tradition on Sunday is to eat lunch with your family, some people go to church, some engage in cultural activities or/and go for a walk.

Technically speaking, there is no such thing as a lunch being a Polish tradition. There never was. Dinner is what you call it, and there is a difference. The government made the change themselves. No one even asked me for an opinion. I guess you can get used to many things after a while. I'm glad bars and restaurants, and other attractions are open on Sunday, otherwise it would have been a sad and gloomy Sunday. One thing I do like about non-trading Sundays, is that there is less traffic, at times almost no cars on suburbs' streets. It's quieter and safer to ride a bicycle.

    • @Cycling.Doughnut
      @Cycling.Doughnut 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@y0uw0tm8 not quite so. Lunch is lunch, dinner is dinner, or even dinner/supper, taking into account how late they eat it. I've lived it, and seen it. Back in the days, dinner in Poland was around 1pm/2pm. Years later it has so much changed and many people eat dinner after work, lets say after 4pm or 5pm, and then supper in the evening. So unhealthy. The lunch is not meant to be as filling and heavy as dinner. Also a different eating out culture between our countries. But even so in Poland (maybe in major cities) lunch may have become a bit more popular lately, than lets say 15-20 or 30 years ago.

Restaurants, cafes, cinemas, museums, pharmacies, street markets and small private grocery shops can be open. The idea is to let employed shop assistants have their day off with families for leisure. If you as a shop owner decide to open your shop and work behind the counter it's your choice.

It's religious-based. Sunday is the day of worship for Catholics and most Christians. Back in the 80s New Jersey (U.S.) did it in most counties as well. They called it the Blue Law and it was so families could go worship in Church and have a day of rest (Referring to Jewish Sabbath). Chic-Fil-A does the same thing, they are a Christian organization and they close up shop on Sunday.

Your assessment is somewhat true, most of those Poles told you they don't speak English because they are conservative and love privacy so they tell you NO even if they do speak some English (they are shy).
English language was made mandatory in 2008 for all kids starting from grade 7 elementary school. Now since 2017 all kids starting from age 3 or 6 in some cases must learn English as a second language.
Polish government pass this law since this makes Poland more competitive and you can communicate in English everywhere around the World.
Before back in communist days we had to learn Russian in grade 5 then German in grade 7, in today's modern business oriented World English is far more useful than Russian or German languages.
You can freely record video in Poland in public places for your personal use what your eyes can see you can record freely. If you record for commercial use or if you are affiliated with some news company etc; then you might need permission or permit, or if you go inside stores and video their prices etc; then you might get asked to leave, just like this security guy that was there to protect businesses privacy.
So, really Poland is not much different then any Western country and of coarse just like anywhere else, there are people and then there are other people that don't play along in a fair way.
They close stores on Sunday to first save money on operational costs like electricity, stuff, other expenses and since we are so Christian most Poles go to church on Sunday to fill Priests chests and coffins full of money 😂 and then they spend some quality time with their families.
Just like Brits have their noon tea/biscuit time, Poles have their entire Sunday to enjoy with their families instead of slaving for all those big mafia companies with greedy corporate pricks 😂.
    Enjoy your stay in Poland.
    Cheers.

It has always been the case that the shops were closed on Sundays. If the majority of Poles didn't like it, the government would have to change the law. I once went to bush hog with my tractor (on Sunday) and when I was driving through the village, one guy was tapping his forehead. Another time I was picking stones in a field and an elderly lady passing by said "it's Sunday!!!" with an expression on her face like I was defecating in the middle of the sidewalk. Poles don't work on Sundays and it has to do with the Christian faith, with Jesus and with the Bible.

Yes. I also think it's a crazy thing to have almost every shop closed on Sundays. But then again, there have been a lot of crazy (and worse) things decreed for the last 8 years. There are some voices here who say that Poles like spending time off with their families etc. Well, I am not sure why they limit it to Poles only. Everybody loves it, and yet in most civilised countries shops are open on the weekends (maybe a bit shorter hours). The employees get other days off instead whn they can rest amd enjoy. If the weekends are for resting, and if we have to FORCE employees to rest, why won't we allow bus drivers, train drivers, pilots, gas station employees, the Police, Fire Brigades, hospitals and clinics, power plant employees and dozens of other professions to make themselves a nice free weekend? Not to mention the fact of what a boost to the economy it is to have trade on the weekends.

Justin, for a minute imagine you work in a gas station whatever brand they are in England, and you have no other experience and can’t get a different job, in England you a screwed, can’t go to party’s, church, birthday celebrations, concerts or festivals, you are fu*ked, you are completely excluded from the civic life of your town, city or province, because you are always at work on Sunday. In Poland and other European countries with similar laws, you can go to a concert or theater and meet a gas station assistant, that will not happen unless these laws are in effect. It’s what they are for! To make it more fair, no matter where you work. Hope you understand that.

@ExpatPolska , this is due to the PiS government ( law & Justice party) who believe all Poles should dedicate this day to going to church, like people Did 50 years ago. Poland is a secular country, and although being predominantly Catholic, it isn’t going to coerce people into going to church m simply because the stores are closed. Low wage earners like university students need the weekend work .

3:32 A beautiful example of how brain surgery works. This lady's brain was operated on in such a way that she doesn't want to have Sunday off. She wants to work on Sunday.
And on all other days too.
Such a solution was developed in early Soviet Russia . It was called 'bezprerivka" which means working without a break, seven days a week. On the other hand, if you talked to her about social issues and the “work-life balance” was mentioned - she would react with enthusiasm. It was the same brain surgery.

I’m afraid it all comes down to the policy of these shopping centres that don’t want people filming or taking photographs with professional cameras for commercial business use. Mobile phones are fine for them because they don’t make high quality filming or photography when comparing with video cameras like your Sony camera. For example when the BBC film something they don’t use mobile phones to film, they use high quality film 🎥 cameras that can be used for broadcasts. Shopping centres want a piece of the pie when people film high quality film productions, so that they can get some finance from it. They know that if they saw someone film with a mobile phone, they know it’s more likely for their personal use, but with top quality cameras, they know that someone is filming for commercial business.

  • @wiolettapysiak2436
    @wiolettapysiak2436 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't understand why people get so angry; you can ask ppl if they speak English-it’s today’s Latin. As some others mentioned in the comments, Poland is full of foreigners from Ukraine, Belarus, and other countries, so it’s common to hear Russian or Ukrainian spoken everywhere. This makes it harder to gauge how well Polish people actually speak English. Plus, there’s that moment of surprise and the British accent, which can sometimes be hard to understand. Here’s a piece of statistical information: according to the latest EF English Proficiency Index report from 2023, Poland ranks 13th in the world in terms of English proficiency, with a score of 598 points. Here's the list :) 1) Netherlands 2) Singapore 3) Austria 4) Denmark 5) Norway 6) Sweden 7) Belgium 8) Portugal 9) South Africa 10) Germany 11) Croatia 12) Greece 13) Poland. Btw I like your videos, cheers

During Communism, the railway station was really interesting but a little dark- the lighting inside was not very good back then. I heard that the station was being built and prepared for a visit by Brezhnev who did not like flying and so he came to visit Poland by train. They had to put covers over the unfinished areas of the station as a temporary measure and then take them away and finish the station properly after he had departed. I remember being there in the main hallway and there was simply nothing before capitalism came along. In some ways, it is nicer now but it just makes everywhere look a little like everywhere else. After all, do you just want to walk around shopping malls with expensive branded goods as if you are in some Eastern European Singapore?

@@wendyHew Are you serious? In an extremely brutal and sadistic way Ukrainians slaughtered 140,000 Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Lesser Poland, including thousands of children (Volhynian massacre). They glorify the perpetrators of this genocide. They do not allow exhumations, we cannot bury our loved ones. The Rwandan genocide seems like a walk in the park in comparison. And when it comes to concentration camps, it was Ukrainians who worked there, not Poles. No one collaborated with the Nazis like the Ukrainians. The 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS is a good example.
"The eagerness of Ukrainians to murder Jews was exploited by the occupiers in every situation. This is evidenced by the report of the 3rd Einsatzkommand from Bila Tserkva. In September 1941, the Nazi torturers murdered 1,100 adult Jews as planned, but protested the execution of 560 children. Ukrainian "policemen" were then called in to help, and they carried out this part of the execution without hesitation. Thereafter, Ukrainians became the backbone of the forces overseeing German death camps in Poland and Germany itself, as well as Nazi ghettos also concentrated in Poland, as well as Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States. Of the 5,000 camp torturers trained by the Nazis at a special training camp in Trawniki, the majority were Ukrainian volunteers".
