  • This is long but I thought the long form would be helpful for anybody out there who, like me, wants to get into hewing a log. I'm not an expert so take from this video what you think might work for you, disregard what you'd like to do differently and, as always, please feel welcome sharing your own tips and techniques!

    hey, love your videos, i had an idea for you that you might be interested in. I think it would be entertaining to watch at least. You could explain and demonstrate how to use an axe and possibly other tools to do yard work, limbing, and tree pruning around your property to show us younger guys how to do it properly in the field. Thanks for your videos anyways!

    Great job man !!! Looks like hard tedious work, but extremely rewarding !! I have yet to hew a beam, though I plan to one day. Every time I watch you do it I learn something and get very Inspired to give it a try 👍

      Thanks man! You're on the same path I took not all that long ago! Your first two chainsaws were my first two as well.

    Oh yeah this is the big one! Just starting the video. The goat couldn't have picked a worse tool for you to be using haha. I'll defintely use my plumb bob if I want to do some accurate timber frame hewing like this.
    Your cutting is definitely getting better. Great skill to practice. Even if you aren't hewing for a purpose. Wood chips are good for the dirt haha.

      Thanks man! The goats keep me on my toes for sure. Definitely agree on the wood chips, we entirely fixed our drainage with literally tons of wood chips, they turn into awesome compost.

    Enjoyed the video. I've still yet to hew a beam but I've got a white cedar log sitting around waiting for me to get to it. Unfortunately, I don't have any goats (the goats were obviously very helpful).

      I’d love to see one of your videos on hewing! I enjoy the way you put them together and always learn something. Still need to make your shave horse that was a great video

    Using an axe like a hand plane, nice ! love this old school stuff, did you do a video on how you stared laying this log out and hewing the first side? I guess it would be your reference side for the other 3 sides.

      Thank you! I have one or two videos where I show that process but I’d like to do a video just on laying out.

    Very respectable work sir. 3 in 1 oil? I noticed the paint comming off that axe...another season and it will look vintage...eyeing down the beam at the end it looks very straight...great job...

      It is 3 in 1! The paint is wearing in really nicely, I'm growing to like the red paint on these axes. Makes it easier to find in the brush too. Thank you! I have a few of these beams set up now drying and hoping a good project for them comes along soon.

    Nice work, that looks like good timber. Any plans for these beams youve collected? Those goats are a crack up

    • @urbanlumberjack
      @urbanlumberjack  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No plans yet! These are mostly practice for when I can get some land and start on a timber frame.
      I might make these into a bench, console table or some other furniture, unless I need them for a repair somewhere.

    do you sell those beams?

    • @urbanlumberjack
      @urbanlumberjack  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’d like to if I can acquire enough. Selling hewn beams is a little bit tough in my area because there is an awesome company that operates nationwide and salvages old barn beams. They handle about all the business there is and do an awesome jobs
