    I purchased the 1600 a few months ago. It looks like you got one of the Chinese made motors that originally came with mine. I had the same problem with the motor. I called Ellis they explained that they were having a hard time sourcing the lesson motor that should come with the saw. The fix is you can’t use an extension cord with the Chinese motor. I asked them to send me the lesson motor as that was one of the main reasons I wanted the saw. They were kind enough to swap it out for me. Love the saw!

      What really happened: They were sleezy enough to try and pass off a POS motor onto you but it didn't work.

      Did your saw run fine after you got the Leeson motor? I just bought an 1800 and it came with the Leeson motor. It does the same thing as it does in this video on the initial start ups.

      I should mention I also have it plugged into the wall, no extension cord.

      I figured I would give an update in case anyone reads these things. I called Ellis. They said it was likely an issue with the gear box. They said the manufacturer had been putting a thin shim in between the cover and a bearing. The added pressure would make the motor work harder, raising the voltage draw. They had me put the saw in the vertical position, then take off the cover plate held on by 4 bolts. It's the smaller one that is horizontal when the saw is vertical. You see the shim sitting on the bearing. I removed it and tested. Starts perfectly fine now. The voltage dropped to the specs on the motor and the amp reading is now slightly less than the motor specs. Hope this helps.

    Ellis needs to get on this channel and explain themselves for half the stuff on this saw

  • @rhalborg
    @rhalborg ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The inrush current of the motor is to high and pulling down the voltage. Try a shorter extension cord or bigger wire diameter on cable. That would work

    • @andrewcourt5156
      @andrewcourt5156 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gee.. that is not good.. to get it to operate, straight out of the box, it is suggested you need to rewire the thing!! You will not be doing the motor much good letting it “labour” like it does on startup..

    I have the same saw. It's very well used (got it for free). Word of caution if you haven't already found out the hard way...when the saw is turned to full miter (+ or - 45 degrees), be careful when lifting the saw to the full "up" position as the center of gravity is no longer centered on the 4 floor contact points. I was cutting 45 degree miters and when done, lifted the saw with gusto, and the whole thing tipped over, smashed to the floor and twisted up the drive pulley cover.

    This is Definitely the Saw I’m going to purchase! Either this one or the 1800, but for sure will be one of those 2 Models from Ellis. Great Video
    Your problem with the Start Capacitor is either going to be a Bad Start Capacitor or you have a bad Voltage Drop where it is plugged in to. I’m betting that it’s a Bad Capacitor though, because I had one that did the exact same thing on a brand new Ingersoll Rand Air Compressor. I called them up and they sent me a new Start Capacitor and it cured the problem as soon as I swapped it out.

    Tay, I’d bet they will exchange that motor for a Leeson brand motor that they used to use on their equipment (I think they still use them on some of their models). Some manufacturers of large tools and equipment source similar parts from various providers now a days. My bet is you got a chinesium motor because that is what they had in house that week. They usually use Leeson I thought.

    Pull the cover and check connections on the start cap. Could have become compromised during shipping. Long term, think about putting a 3ph motor w/ vfd. Infinitely adjustable speeds with no pulley change. Love the channel!

    • @marclevitt8191
      @marclevitt8191 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it is missing quite a few niceties for a saw of this price. I would want more horsepower and a VFD. I think a chip blower should come with the saw. The ways and pulleys look to me like they should be shielded from chips and debris. The door having no latch is a real oversight. Velcro? That is kinda lame. Needs a little mirror tucked under the arm so the angle gauge is visible in line with the blade. Or maybe a duplicate of the angle gauge somewhere to line things up. But I guess all of this stuff is DIY.

    Great saw the company I worked for had one that they bought in 1988 and it's been a workhorse. The only thing they replace is the blades because of the idiots using it. They tend to let it hog into the metal to fast, tearing off teeth. The Velcro on the doors will last it's still holding after 35 years. Watch it on round stock. That vise will let it spin if you don't get it tight. We set ours at one speed and have never changed it, just adjust the rate of cut.

    I like the double mitre feature of the saw. I have been looking at mitre saws to help with speeding my cut time up. Overall, it seems like a decent saw with some tweaking to be done. The cheap Chinesium motor is a big turnoff for me. That saw deserves a nice, smooth motor. I don't know if Baldor is still US made but would be my first choice. The Velcro on the blade covers is a real disappointment to see. Not saying the saw is junk, but it just pisses me off to see that crap on a machine you pay good money for. Hope they get you a new wheel! :)

      Whatever you do don't buy a lay down bandsaw look into a roll in band saw. They are much easier to use and will last you much longer without any of this bullshit. Buy a Kalamazoo or a Drake brand saw and everyone will last you a lifetime.. It doesn't have the double compound but as a fabricator of fifty years I have rarely used a double compound on any fabrication. Ellis Saw's we're good at one time but now they are just another Chinese junk brand. Ellis is just like any other American company they felt they could make better money importing Chinese junk and now the reputation is paying for it and that is a fact.

    watching this after getting curious about the saws origin , the way its been packaged makes me suspect that it was actually a customer return being sold on as new just to get it off their hands in the shop selling it to
    guess you need to fix it youreself as they probably trow a hissyfit when you start to trow youre weight around about it being defected
    they might actually have gotten their refund from the manufacturer after taking it back from the former owner allready before selling it on to youre local shop making it their problem
